OTTAWA - The Carleton Ravens used the home ice advantage to add a victory on their season.
The Ravens scored the first goal of the game just shy of six minutes into the first period. This was by Orleans native Joey West. This boosted Raven morale.
At 16 minutes in, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Ridgebacks answered back making the score 1-1. Shortly afterwards, the Ravens scored for the second time during the period. Centre Mitch Zion earned the point for the Ravens. UOIT again scored a quick one ending the period at 2-2.
No sooner did the second period begin, Timothy Billingsley for the Ravens put one between the posts hitting the back mesh. Then his teammate Ryan Van Stralen scored his first career goal as a Raven. The Ravens pushed hard on the offence with Michael McNamee posting one to the scoreboard making it 5-2. What coach Marty Johnston must have said to his players during intermission inspired them, especially Joe Pleckaitis who took it to the net unassisted. The Carleton team certainly capitalized. The Ridgebacks quickly came back with two goals. The last of the period was scored by Wellington, Ontario's Cameron Yuill. He was assisted by Jesse Stoughton. By the end of the period, the score stood Ravens 8, UOIT Ridgebacks 4.
The third period saw only one goal by either team – the Ravens.
Nipissing 1 @ McGill 8
MONTREAL - Cedric McNicoll of Thetford Mines, Que., collected four points and defenceman Samuel Labrecque of Granby, Que., tallied twice as McGill overwhelmed the visiting Nipissing University Lakers 8-1 to kick-off Homecoming Week festivities in men's university hockey at McConnell Arena, Friday.
COMPLETE BOXSCORE
The Redmen led 3-0 after one period and 6-0 late in the middle stanza before Nipissing's Jaret Smith of Red Deer, Alta., broke the goose-egg at 16:13 on the power-play. McGill had a 44-34 margin in shots. They were highly-productive on special teams, going 3-for-6 on the power-play. McGill also killed off five of six manpower disadvantages and added a shorthanded goal.
McNicoll, an accounting junior in his second-year player with the Redmen who merited all-conference honours last season, was one of seven McGill goal scorers, scored the game-winner and added three helpers.
Rounding out the scoring for McGill was rookie defenceman Dominic Poulin, along with forwards David Rose, Simon Tardif-Richard (shorthanded), Max Le Sieur and Jonathan Bonneau, a first-year transfer from St. Thomas University.
Goaltender Jacob Gervais-Chouinard kicked aside 33 of 34 shots for the win, improving his record to 2-0 on the season. The Lakers deployed two puck-stoppers. Kirk Rafusestarted and took the loss, allowing four goals on 17 shots before being yanked after being beaten at the 57-second mark in the middle frame. Cole Holowenko played the remainder on the game and also conceded four goals, on 27 shots.
The contest featured 78 minutes in penalties, including 40 of which were doled out in a fracas after the final whistle. Nipissing's Doug Harvey, who received a whopping 33 penalty minutes, including 29 in the post-game melee, including a minor for instigating a fight and a gross misconduct for removing his helmet to engage with McGill defencemanHugo Laporte. As per CIS rules, the penalties called will result in an automatic minimum five-game suspension for Harvey but a new rule adopted in the off season will allow Laporte to play without suspension because of the instigator infraction.
Waterloo 3 @ York 2
TORONTO - The York University Lions men's hockey team lost with a final period goal from the Waterloo Warriors Friday night (Oct. 17), ending the game 3-2 at Canlan Ice Sports.
In the first period at 4:03, Shayne Rover (Newmarket, Ont.) stole the puck and stormed the Warrior goalie, Mike Morrison, with a strike that landed behind the goal line, establishing a 1-0 advantage.
Just over four minutes later, Colton Vannucci (Calgary) invaded the Warrior defence from the right side to provide an assist to Derek Sheppard (Ajax, Ont.), who received the puck on the left side. Shepard buried the puck behind Morrison, advancing York to a 2-0 lead.
Warriors forward Matt Kennedy diffused the disadvantage with a bullet shot at 15:53 that ricocheted off the Lions goalie Chris Perugini (King City, Ont.) and penetrated the net.
In the second period, Colin Behenna tied the game with a goal just 90 seconds into the frame, threatening the win for the Lions. The Warriors dominated the second period with more possessions and several rapid shots on Perugini. Perugini did not let the Warriors take the lead as he surrendered his body to the rigid Warrior attack.
The score remained at 2-2 heading into the final period, but the tie did not last long as a Waterloo bullet finally leaked through Perugini's defence as Justin Larson scored a goal at 1:47, winning the game.
Perugini played a sensational game with 41 saves, while Morrison stopped 23 for the win.
The loss drops the Lions' record to 2-3-0 on the year, while the Warriors improved to 3-1-0 with the victory.
Guelph 7 @ Brock 3
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - Murray Nystrom was hoping his teams perfect preseason would carry over into the regular season. But three games into the 2014-15 campaign the Brock Badgers are winless at (0-3) and have been outscored 17-5 after dropping a 7-3 decision to the Guelph Gryphons Friday night at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
Despite the Badgers early woes the Brock Head Coach remains optimistic due to his clubs work ethic.
"The one thing I do like is that we're competing," said Nystrom. "From start to finish guys are blocking shots, they're finishing checks, they're diving for loose pucks, but it just seems right now things just aren't going our way."
The Badgers have been hampered by allowing early goals and that was the case again versus Guelph. The Gryphons opened a 3-0 first period lead on just 10 shots.
Nystrom is happy his team can quickly erase Friday's result from their minds as they visit York Saturday night.
"Thankfully. Sometimes in our league we have such a long stretch between games but not tonight," explained Nystrom. "We get York right away tomorrow. If we weren't competing and didn't have such a high willingness to compete I would be a lot more concerned. We'll make our own breaks, that's just the way we'll have to do it. I think we'll respond well Saturday night."
Guelph would extend its lead to 5-1 after 40 minutes of play before Brock made it 5-3 midway through the third period, but that's all the Badgers could muster.
Teal Burns completed the hat-trick for Guelph into an empty-net.
Kaine Geldart and Sammy Banga scored powerplay goals, while Taylor Fielding also found the back of the net for Brock.
The Badgers went 2-for-4 with the man-advantage while the Gryphons were 0-for-4.
Laurier 2 @ Windsor 5
WINDSOR, Ont. - The Lancer men's hockey team extended their win streak to four games after a convincing 5-2 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday night at South Windsor Arena.
With the win the Lancers remain undefeated with a 4-0 record, while the Golden Hawks fall to 1-2-0 on the year.
Spencer Pommells had an outstanding game for the Blue & Gold with a four point performance, finishing with 2 goals and 2 assists. Ryan Green picked up 3 points in the game with 1 goal and 2 assists. Parker Van Buskirk turned away 23 shots for the Lancer's while Laurier's Christopher Festarini had 32 saves in the game.
The Lancers opened up the scoring 3:27 into the first period on a powerplay goal scored by Saverio Posa, with assists credited to Pommells and Kenny Bradford. Later on in the frame, Laurier tied it up as Zach Lorentz beat Van Buskirk. Windsor outshot the Golden Hawks 12-6 in the first period.
The Lancers scored the only goal in the second, as Pommells put one past Festarini. Windsor then went on to kill three penalties in the period to hold a one goal lead heading into the third period. Van Buskirk turned away all eight shots he faced in the frame.
The Golden Hawks came out hard to start the third period as Ryan Lopes scored 2:18 minutes in on a powerplay after Kyle Hope was sent to the box for tripping.
The Lancers quickly retook the lead as Pommells scored his second of the game with assists being credited to Green and Matt Beaudoin. Green scored the Windsor's fourth goal to put them up 4-2 with a beautiful pass from Pommells and Bradford. Beaudoin then added an empty net goal with 1:32 remaining to secure the win.
Lakehead 7 @ Toronto 5
TORONTO - The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team dropped a 7-5 decision to the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday, October 17 at Varsity Arena.
With the loss, the Blues drop to 1-2-0 early in OUA West division action.
The Varsity Blues opened the scoring just 1:10 into the contest as third-year forward Patrick Marsh forced a turnover in front of the net and sophomore Connor Cleverley roofed the puck over Lakehead netminder Justin McDonald.
Lakehead nearly evened the score midway through the first as rookie forward E.J Faust rifled a shot off the post. The Thunderwolves did get on the board with just over two minutes remaining in the first period when Mike Hammond buried a rebound off a Jay Gilbert point shot.
However, Toronto regained the one-goal advantage with 34 seconds to go in the first when veteran Tyler Liukkonen tapped it in after a scramble in front of the net.
The Blues led 2-1 after 20 minutes of action.
Lakehead's Austin McDonald tied the game three minutes into the second as he capitalized on a turnover in front of Toronto's net. The Thunderwolves went up 4-2 with two goals two minutes apart from Keith Grondin and Jake Wright.
The Blues got back on track with a powerplay goal from Michael Markovic midway through the frame, but Lakehead held the 4-3 lead heading into the third period.
The Thunderwolves wasted no time, extending their lead just 40 seconds into the third with a powerplay marker from Mitch Fillman. Dylan Heide cut the deficit to one over two minutes later when his point shot took a weird bounce off the end boards and wound up in the Lakehead net.
Kelin Ainsworth added another for the Thunderwolves 12:06 into the third, but Paul Van De Velde answered right back, capitalizing on a McDonald misplay and firing the puck into the open net.
Toronto attempted to rally, but Lakehead proved victorious, adding an empty net goal with 30 seconds to go to seal the 7-5 victory.
Blues netminder Garrett Sheehan made 20 saves in the loss.

Lakehead 3 @ Ryerson 2
TORONTO - A pair of goals from Ryerson's Robert Visca (Everett, Ont.) was not enough to give the Rams a win as Ryerson dropped a 3-2 decision to the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday afternoon.
BOXSCORE
Ryerson was looking to exact some revenge on the Thunderwolves after Lakehead knocked the Rams out of last season's playoffs but the home side got off to a slow start.
Kelin Ainsworth opened the scoring for Lakehead just 2:11 into the game when he shoveled home a loose puck in the crease on a centering effort from Matt Kaarela.
A Rams turnover in the defensive zone led to Brennan Dubchack's first goal of the season when his wrister to the blocker side beat Ryerson goaltender Troy Passingham (Mississauga, Ont.) at the 7:44 mark.
In the second, Mike Quesnele extended the Thunderwolves' lead to three when his point shot bounced through some legs in front of Passingham and found the twine.
Visca got the Rams on the board at 10:42 of the second period when he went hard to the net and found a rebound from Keevin Cutting's (Bracebridge, Ont.) point shot to cut the deficit to 3-1 after 40 minutes.
Ryerson applied continuous pressure to start the third period and was rewarded less than five minutes into the frame when Mitch Gallant (Charlottetown, PEI) picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and gathered speed down the left wing before driving to the net. His attempt on goal was denied but Visca was there to pick up the pieces and net his second to make it a one-goal game.
The Rams had an opportunity to tie the game with 11 minutes remaining when aLucas Froese (Grunthal, Man.) shot came hard off the end boards and foundJason Kelly's (Toronto) stick but he couldn't hit the target on the backhand.
With the goaltender pulled late in the frame the Rams had a pair of chances to send the game to overtime but Lakehead goalie Justin McDonald was up to the task.
McDonald stopped 31 of 33 shots for the victory while Passingham finished with 27 saves on 30 shots in the losing effort.
Ryerson goal-scorer Robert Visca spoke following the game about turning the game around after falling behind early.
"We simplified everything. Hockey's a pretty simple game once you break it down so once we started getting pucks in deep and making simple plays, things started happening. Once you can get a team like Lakehead who is a very good team on their heels, you just kind of keep coming in waves. We had a bunch of looks at the end, just couldn't capitalize."
Western 3 @ Waterloo 4
WATERLOO, Ont. - For the Waterloo Warriors, there's nothing like shaking a five-year-old monkey off their collective backs – especially when that monkey is a purple horse.
Two early third-period goals helped the Warriors topple the Western Mustangs 4-3 on Saturday night, snapping a ten-game regular season winless streak against their foes from London in the process. The win, Waterloo's first against Western since October 8, 2009, lifted the Warriors to 4-1 and into sole possession of 2nd in the OUA West Division early in the season.
For the second time in 24 hours, Justin Larson (Buckhorn) netted a game-winning-goal in the third period for the Warriors. Chris Chappell (Pickering) added a goal and an assist for Waterloo, while captain Joe Underwood (Canton) and Riley Sonnenburg (Cambridge) also added tallies in a game that saw the Warriors erase three separate one-goal deficits.
Noah Schwartz, Julian Cimadamore, and Stefan Saliturio scored goals for the Mustangs, who were handed their first loss of the season after starting 3-0. Mike Morrison(Hamilton) was outstanding at times in the Warriors net, turning aside 35 shots for the win. Greg Dodds took the loss for the Mustangs, making 26 stops in defeat.
The Mustangs were first to get on the board early in the opening frame, when Schwartz tipped home a David Corrente point shot to make it 1-0 Western. Underwood evened things on the power play with a seeing-eye wrister that beat Dodds, courtesy a tremendous screen in front by Waterloo's Brett Mackie (Whitby). Cimadamore responded on a Western power play less than five minutes later, making it 2-1 for the visitors after 20 minutes.
The Warriors carried the play for the bulk of the second period, and after Sonnenburg finished a pretty give-and-go off the side boards to square the score at 2-2, it looked as though the teams would remain deadlocked into the third. But with less than a minute to play in the period, Salituro marched out from the corner and sniped a perfect shot over Morrison's glove and under the cross bar for a 3-2 Mustangs lead after two.
The late goal could have deflated the Warriors, but instead they came out flying in the third. Less than two minutes into the period, Chappell got some time and space along the left wing and fired home a snap shot between Dodds' glove and pad. Then, less than two minutes later on a man advantage, Larson found a soft spot in the high slot and slammed home a one-timer for the eventual winner.
The game's highest dramatics were still to come though, when, during a delayed slashing penalty to Mackie, Colin Behenna (Waterloo) was called for a second slashing infraction, giving Western a full two-minute 5-on-3 advantage with less than seven minutes to play in regulation. However, Morrison made a highlight-reel post-to-post blocker save and the Warriors were able to kill the penalties to secure the win.
Laurentian 5 @ McGill 2
MONTREAL - Nick Esposito scored the game-winner midway through the final period and the visiting Laurentian University Voyagueurs added a pair of empty-net goals enroute to a surprising 5-2 triumph over McGill at McConnell Arena, Saturday.
It was Laurentian's first victory over the Redmen since Nov. 17, 1996 -- when they skated to an 8-4 triumph in Sudbury -- snapping an 0-4-1 winless streak as the Voyageurs improved to 5-11-2 lifetime in head-to-head meetings.
Brock 3 @ York 1
TORONTO - The York University Lions men's hockey team was defeated by the Brock Badgers by a score of 3-1 on Saturday (Oct. 18) at Canlan Ice Sports.
The Lions had a slow start to the first period despite having 10 shots on the goal.
The Badgers broke the deadlock at 13:31 through a Sammy Banga goal. The Badgers were hovering over the Lions' defensive line during the power play and after a series of passing, Banga found the breakthrough.
Both teams livened up as soon as the game restarted in the second period, constantly pressing on the defence.
The Badgers looked dangerous at the start of the second frame. Nine minutes in, Lions goaltender Chris Perugini (King City, Ont.) ricocheted a powerful attempt from the left. The deflection fell to Andrew Radjenovic, who released a venomous shot that landed in Perugini's gloves.
Jeremie Perron (Calgary) had the best shot of the period after coming out of the penalty box. Perron received the pass and aimed it at the top corner of the net, but Badgers goalie Adrian Volpe was there to make the save.
Rookie forward Colton Vannucci (Calgary) scored the equalizer for the Lions with 4:01 left in the second period. Trevor Petersen (Thornhill, Ont.) found Vannucci on the right, who slipped the puck past the goalie's legs and into the net. Peterson and defender Shayne Rover (Newmarket, Ont.) were credited with the assists.
Right before the intermission, Badgers right winger Kaine Geldart came close to scoring after going around the net and attempting to slip the puck into the goal. Perugini dove to get on top of it just before it crossed over the line.
The third period tightened the deadlock between the two teams. Both goalies were equally challenged by the other teams' offence. Mark Cross (Strasbourg, Sask.) intercepted a pass in midfield eight minutes through the period. Three defenders were marking the forward before Cross attempted a shot that was caught by the goalie.
With 5:19 to go on the final period, the Badgers snatched the game-winning goal by Gregory Jambrosich on the counter-attack. The Badgers caught the Lions off-guard before they could transition to defence.
Jambrosich grabbed another goal after a defensive error on the Lions' part. A miscommunication led the defender to pass to an approaching Jambrosich, who capitalized on the mistake and scored the third goal for the Badgers with less than three minutes left on the clock.
Perugini ended the game with 39 saves while his counterpart, Volpe, made 30. Both goaltenders played the whole three periods.
Concordia 2 @ Queen's 3
KINGSTON, Ont. - Spencer Abraham (Campbellville, Ont.) scored the go-ahead goal in the third period as the Gaels earned a 3-2 victory against the Concordia Stingers at the Memorial Centre on homecoming weekend.
The game began as a back-and-forth affair with both squads generating numerous quality scoring opportunities. The Gaels opened the scoring when Andrew Wiebe (Thunder Bay, Ont.) crashed the net and buried a loose puck, giving Queen's the early advantage. Taylor Clements (Toronto) and Geordie Maguire (Winnipeg) were credited with the assists on Wiebe's first tally of the season. Gaels goaltender Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) was perfect in the first frame, turning aside all six shots that came his way.
Concordia knotted the score in the first minute of the second frame when Domenic Beauchemin drove the net and slid the puck five-hole. The Stingers quickly added another to grab the lead as Sean Bluden's point shot found its way through traffic and into the back of the cage. The Gaels buried the equalizer after Patrick McGillis (Calgary) deposited a rebound off a scramble in front of the Concordia net. Neither team could regain the lead as goaltenders Bailie and Robin Billingham steered aside all shots to preserve the tie heading into the final period of play.
The Gaels scored the decisive goal just over three minutes into the final frame. Defenceman Abraham jumped into the rush to give the Gaels a three-on-one and buried a drop pass from Clements in the slot. Bailie made several impressive saves in the final five minutes of the game as he went on to collect his second victory of the season. Robin Billingham of the Stingers suffered the loss, making 26 saves for the night.
Final shots for the game totalled 29-24 in favour of the Gaels. Abraham and Clements led all players with two points apiece.
Toronto 3 @ Windsor 10
WINDSOR, Ont. - The No. 9 Lancer men's hockey team earned their fifth straight victory with a 10-3 win over the visiting Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday night at South Windsor Arena.
With the victory, the Lancers are 5-0-0- on the year and are in sole possession of first place in the OUA west division.
Thirteen Lancers make it onto the game sheet and Spencer Pommells once again led the Blue & Gold with another four point night that included a goal and three assists. Rookie Scott Prier finished the game with two goals and an assist.
The Lancers opened the game up right away with Daulton Siwak scoring just three minutes into the contest. Nearly three minutes later, Scott Prier scored the Lancers second goal unassisted, and just over a minute after that Chad Shepley accepted a gorgeous pass from captain Drew Palmer to put the Lancers up by three.
After Pommells scored to make it 4-0, Toronto's frustration began to show landing Jeff Brown and Windsor's Isak Quakenbush in the box for 10 minutes each. Brown received an additional two minutes to put the Lancers on the power play. Just eleven seconds with the extra man, Palmer put the Lancers up 5-0 heading into the first intermission.
Toronto goalie Garrett Sheehan replaced Brett Willows to start the second, and the changed seemed to spark the Varsity Blues as they scored just two minutes into the period with a power play goal from Michael Markovic.
The teams continued to trade goals throughout the period and Windsor held a 7-2 lead heading into the final frame. Lancer goal scorers included Matt Beaudoin and Prier with his second of the game. Toronto's second goal came unassisted by Marcus Yolevski.
The second period was littered with penalties on both sides as Toronto picked up 27 penalty minutes and 2 game misconducts while the Lancers had 16 penalty minutes. Lancer goaltender Parker Van Buskirk pulled himself after multiple scrums, and Matt Murphy took over for the Lancers in goal.
The Lancers kept their cool after some rough play from Toronto and added three goals in the final period from Mike Christou, Saverio Posa, and Dylan Seguin. The Varsity Blues Tyler Liukkonen put one past Murphy in the third period to end the game 10-3 in favour of Windsor.
Van Buskirk turned aside 9 saves in the game, while Murphy kept out 13 others after the switch.
