OTTAWA (CIS) – Emma Taylor, a rugby player from St. Francis Xavier University, and Vincent Llorca, a hockey player from Laurentian University, are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Nov. 2, 2014.
Taylor, a fifth-year business administration student from Scotsburn, N.S., was named tournament MVP at the CIS championship in Guelph, Ont., after she guided the X-Women to their third Monilex Trophy triumph in five years. The all-Canadian lock, who led all players at the competition with seven tries in three games, scored at least a pair in every contest, including the game-winning try on the last play of the match in a thrilling 27-24 victory over Western that punched StFX's ticket to the gold-medal final. Taylor, who ends her stellar university career with three CIS rings, also helped the X-Women defeat Alberta 41-17 in their tournament opener and McMaster 43-34 in Sunday's championship match.
Soccer players Cynthia Turcotte of Laval and Pilar Khoury of Ottawa, as well as Thompson Rivers volleyball player Iuliia Pakhomenko were also nominated for the women's award.
Llorca, a second-year mechanical engineering student from Le Mont-Dore, France, was involved in eight of his team's 10 goals this past weekend, including an incredible five-goal performance, as the Voyageurs improved to 6-3 in league play thanks to a 4-3 shootout win over Waterloo and a 7-6 defeat of Laurier. After assisting on each of Laurentian's three markers in regulation Friday against the Warriors, the sophomore defenceman exploded for five goals the next night, including a hat-trick on the power play, to set a single-game school record for most goals by a rearguard. Prior to his sudden offensive outburst, the talented Frenchman had two points (1-1-2) in seven contests this season.
Soccer players Oliver Jones of UNB, Wilfred Girard of UQAM and Jordian Farahani of Saskatchewan were the other male nominees.
