M-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: Lancers improve to 7-0 with pair of victories over Thunderwolves
Friday, October 24
Concordia 8 @ York 2
The York University Lions men's hockey team lost to the Concordia Stingers 8-2 on Friday night (Oct. 24) at Canlan Ice Sports.
The Stingers opened up the scoring at 12:33 of the first period with a goal that shook the Lions' defence when Dany Potvin and Alex MacDonald crossed the puck from the right side to the left side, allowing the very fast Olivier Hinse to net the puck.
The Lions often held the puck in the Stingers half by chipping the puck over the defenders and making quick passes on the right side, but the Stingers picked up on many counter plays. The puck criss-crossed from left to right in both the Lion's and the Stinger's half in a fast-paced first period.
The second frame was action-packed with a total of five goals and 27 shots coming from both sides.
The Stingers started the scoring with a chipped goal at 2:45 by Dominic Beauchemin over Chris Perugini (King City, Ont.) while he was on the ground, and at 5:45, a York defender lost his stick leaving a gap for the Stinger attacker Antoine Houde-Caron to score a third goal.
Dylan Smoskowitz (Richmond Hill, Ont.) created an opportunity for the Lions when he sent the puck from the right side to Mitch VanTeeling (Brandon, Ont.) on the left who sent a one touch shot flying to the net, but Stinger goalie Robin Billingham stopped the potential goal.
In a counter attack Hinse charged Perugini, who was left alone in the back, and sent the puck to the in the net at 6:57.
The Stingers attacked again with a brilliant shot from Jeremy Barriault over the top right shoulder of Perugini at 8:42, making the score 5-0.
York finally found a break with a great goal by Kyle Campbell (Halifax) that he chipped over Bilingham's head to the centre of the net.
With the start of the third at 6:57 Hinse netted a hat trick with the sixth goal for Concordia. The Lions netted another goal at 14:50 by Colton Vannucci (Calgary) to change the score to 6-2.
Concordia kept on stinging with two final goals at 15:23 and 18:25, both by Hugo Vincent.
The Lions had 24 shots and 17 saves from Perugini, who played 28:42, and 17 saves for Mitch Maraschiello (Buffalo, N.Y.) who played 31:18. The Stingers finished with a total of 42 shots and 22 saves from Bilingham.
Up next for the Lions is a game on Saturday at 7pm against the No. 4 nationally-ranked UQTR Patriotes at Canlan Ice Sports.

RMC 2 @ Carleton 4
It took a full 60 minute effort for the Carleton Ravens men's hockey team to come away with a victory over the RMC Paladins on Friday night at the Carleton Ice House. The Ravens finished with 59 shots on net in their 4-2 win, which saw the team score three goals in the third period.
Early on, the Ravens were on the offence as they buzzed in the RMC zone challenging the Paladins defence and RMC goalie Evan Deviller. After numerous scoring chances, RMC turned the tables and opened the scoring. On their second shot of the game, RMC's Frederic Thouin scored off a deflection. Carleton continued to press and with just under two minutes left in the opening frame, Joe Pleckaitis saw his pass deflect of a Paladins defenceman and past Deviller. This was Pleckaitis's seventh goal of the season and it tied the game at 1.
The second period saw both the Ravens and the Paladins trade scoring chances. There was a lot of action in front of Deviller as he held off a Raven barrage of shots. With four minutes left in the period, the Paladins Kyle Phillips broke away and potted one making the score 2-1, despite Carleton holding a 35-13 advantage in shots.
The Ravens started the third period on the powerplay and Joe Pleckaitis scored in the first 20 seconds, making it 2-2. It was his second of the game and came off a nice cross-ice pass from Mitch Zion. With 13 minutes gone in the period, Joey West scored for the Ravens to put them up by one. Zion and Ryan Van Stralen assisted on the goal after a hard forecheck. The Ravens continued to pressure and Jeff Hayes scored his third goal of the season, sealing the win. The final score was 4-2 with Carleton outshooting their opponents 59-14, including a third period which only saw the Paladins record one shot on net.
RMC came into the game with a 0-5 record in regular season play. The Ravens now improve to 4-2 on the season.
The crowd at tonight's game was dotted with pink. Carleton was hosting "Think Pink" weekend. Funds raised from donations and a portion of ticket sales were going to support the fight against womens' cancers in the Ottawa area. The Ravens players sported pink hockey laces on their skates and they used pink hockey tape on their sticks.
The Ravens next game is Saturday October 25 at 7 p.m. versus Cornell University in an NCAA exhibition game. Carleton will then return home for a two-game series against the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday, October 31st and Saturday, November 1st. Both games are a 7 p.m. start time.

McGill 5 @ Nipissing 2
The effort was there, the chances were there, unfortunately for the Nipissing Lakers men's hockey team, the results were not.
The Lakers dropped their third of the season – and second to McGill – Friday night at home, as the Redmen skated away with a 5-2 victory on the strength of a few timely goals.
The previous meeting between the two teams ended up an 8-1 victory for McGill, so tonight's results were an improvement, but the Lakers still came up short of the two points.
Just under a minute into the game, McGill opened up the scoring and took a 1-0 lead that stood for about half the period.
Colin Campbell's power play marker would tie it up for the Lakers, but before the end of the period, the Redmen would regain the lead.
In the second, the Redmen scored the lone goal to go up 3-1 and extended their lead in the early part of the third with a shorthanded marker.
The shorthanded goal sealed the fate of the Lakers, who had a chance to climb within one, but instead fell behind by three.
Jacob McDowell would added a goal with just under eight minutes left in the game, but with the goalie pulled, the Redmen iced things with their fifth of the night.
Kirk Rafuse made32 saves in the loss, while the Lakers fired 30 shots towards the Redmen net.
The Lakers are off until next Friday when they host the Laurier Golden Hawks at 7 p.m. at Memorial Gardens.

Sammy Banga added two third period goals in the lossST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock Badgers men's hockey team (1-3-1 OUA) picked up a huge point in a 4-3 double overtime loss to the No. 4 ranked Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières Patriotes (5-0-0 OUA).
"We have been focused on getting better in all areas, every day," Brock Head Coach Murray Nystrom said. "I like how we competed tonight, I like how we played with and without and the puck."
In an opening period that saw only seven shots combined, UQTR got on the board first, as Tommy Giroux setup Marc-Olivier Mimar for his third goal of the campaign with 5:13 remaining.
Brock rookie Spencer Turcotte would tie the game 1-1 with just over a minute left in the period, recording his second goal of the season. Daniel Zweep and Evan Morden added the assists.
Four minutes into the second period, Giroux setup Mimar for his second goal of the game, to give UQTR a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.
Midway through the third period, the Badgers Sammy Banga answered with back-to-back goals just over a minute apart to put Brock up 3-2 with eight minutes left in the period. Thomas Welsh and Andrew Radjenovic collected the assists.
UQTR's Anthony Verret beat Brock starter Adrian Volpe to tie the game 3-3 with four minutes remaining in regulation, sending it to overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime, this one would be decided in the new 3-on-3 format in the second overtime. With just 14 seconds left in the second overtime, the Patriotes Verret and Martin Lefebvre setup Mimar for the natural hat trick and his second game-winning goal of 2014.
Volpe made 23 stops in the loss. UQTR's Francis Desrosiers turned aside 26 shots to pick up the win.
Brock finished the game 1-for-6 on the powerplay, while Trois-Rivieres was 1-for-4.
The Badgers now host the Concordia Stingers Saturday night. Game time at the Seymour-Hannah Centre is 7:15 pm.
Notes: New OUA and CIS rules this year feature a five-minute 4-on-4 overtime period, followed by a five-minute 3-on-3 overtime period, then a shootout.

Windsor 4 @ Lakehead 3
Windsor's Spencer Pommells scored the only goal of the first period when he beat Lakehead netminder Justin McDonald at the 18:18 mark.
Keith Grondin evened the score early in the second period when he rifled the puck past Lancers' goalie Parker Van Buskirk on a nice feed from Mike Hammond. But a quick reply by Drew Palmer and another by Pommells put Windsor up 3-1 just a few minutes later.
After being set-up by Hammond and Ryan Magill, Brennen Dubchak narrowed the Lancers' lead to 3-2 at the 12:24 mark to round out the scoring in the middle frame.
Hammond picked up his third helper of the night when Mitch Fillman converted on a Lakehead power play at 4:42 of the final stanza to tie the game up at 3-3. Just over two minutes later with the Wolves once again playing with the extra man, Jake Wright scored from in-close to give Lakehead a 4-3 lead, igniting the crowd in the process.
Windsor's Palmer notched his second goal of the game with just over a minute remaining in the contest, and at that point it looked like the game was headed for overtime. But the ever-dangerous Pommells struck again with only five seconds left on the clock, completing his hat-trick and stunning the Lakehead faithful.
The Molson Three Stars of the game were:
1. Spencer Pommells, Windsor
2. Mike Hammond, Lakehead
3. Brennen Dubchak, Lakehead
The Thunderwolves will look to rebound when the two teams square off again at the Fort William Gardens on Saturday night.

Western 2 @ UOIT 4
OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT men's hockey team got back in the win column on Friday night with a 4-2 victory over the Western Mustangs at the Campus Ice Centre.
Alex Derlis (Campbellcroft, Ont.) scored his first goal as a Ridgeback, which turned out to be the game-winner 16:38 into the second period. UOIT would dominate the first 40-minutes, jumping out to a 3-0 lead and outshooting Western 22-14.
Even with Western entering the final period on a power play, that would not stop the Ridgebacks' momentum as Kevin George (Uxbridge, Ont.) scored a breakaway shorthanded goal to put the blue and white up 4-0. UOIT leads the OUA with three shorthanded goals this season.
The Mustangs would get on the board with back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart shortly after George's goal, with Stefan Salituro and Stephen Gaskin scoring their third and first goals of the season respectively.
With Western looking to cut the Ridgeback lead to just one, UOIT goaltender Brendan O'Neill (Ilderton, Ont.) came up with a number of big saves to earn his third win of the season. Western would hold a 30-28 advantage in shots. O'Neill has started all six games for UOIT and has a .903 save percentage.
James Woodcroft (Milton, Ont.) and Cameron Yuill (Wellington, Ont.) were the other goal scorers for UOIT.
UOIT is 3-2-1 and sits in fourth place in the OUA eastern conference standings early in the season. After starting the year with three wins, Western has dropped two straight to fall to 3-2-0.
Up next for UOIT is a home game against the Guelph Gryphons (2-3-2) on Saturday, Oct. 25. Puck drop at the Campus Ice Centre is 7:30 p.m.

Guelph 2 @ Queen's 3 (2 OT)
Kingston, Ontario (October 24, 2014) - As Queen's hosted their Puck Cancer for Carley game to raise money for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation on Friday night at the Memorial Centre, Eric Ming (Williamstown, Ont.) buried the overtime winner to give the Gaels a 3-2 win against the Guelph Gryphons.
Carley Allison is a 19 year old student in her first year at Queen's, battling clear-cell sarcoma for the second time. The Gaels men's hockey team were inspired by her strength, as Allison hasn't let high-intensity radiation or surgery near her trachea stop her from doing what she loves. Allison has been singing from a young age, and is scheduled to sing O Canada at the ACC in November. Before puck drop at the Memorial Centre, Allison took the mic and performed the national anthem for the Gaels, Gryphons, and all in attendance. In total, the game raised nearly $15,000.00 to go toward the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.
It didn't take long for the Gryphons to strike, scoring in the first minute of the game as Andres Kopstals rushed the net and buried a loose puck over sprawling Gaels goaltender Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.). Queen's responded with a tally of their own when Darcy Greenaway (Wilton, Ont.) led a two-on-one and deposited his first as a member of the Gaels. Queen's continued to accumulate time on the attack, nearly adding another on their first power play of the game. The Gryphons quickly countered with offensive pressure of their own, eventually regaining the lead on a rebound goal from Carlos Amestoy.
The Gaels knotted the game just over one minute into the second frame on a shorthanded goal from Warren Steele (Williamsburg, Ont.). Steele jumped into the rush to form a two-on-one with Ming and buried a cross-crease pass into the back of the net. Queen's controlled the play for the majority of the period, outshooting Guelph 12-6. Patrick McGillis (Calgary) had a great opportunity to put Queen's ahead, but was denied by the glove of Gryphons goaltender Keith Hamilton. Bailie made a sensational save of his own in the final minutes of the second, denying a wrap-around with the right pad.
Neither team could score the go-ahead goal in the final frame as goaltenders Bailie and Hamilton made 12 and 11 saves respectively. Greenaway continued to accumulate scoring opportunities, nearly winning it for the Gaels in the final minute on an odd man rush. Greenaway received the pass and tried to slip it five-hole but was turned aside as Hamilton squeezed the pads together for the save.
The best scoring opportunity of the first overtime period belonged to the Gaels as Patrick Downe (New Maryland, N.B.) was robbed on a great glove save by Hamilton as he scrambled back into his net after stopping a two-on-one.
Ming deposited the game-winner in the new three-on-three double overtime period, rifling a shot from above the circle to the top left corner. Ming led all skaters in the game with two points. Bailie earned the victory and finished the night with 31 saves, while Hamilton collected 40 in a losing effort.
The Gaels (2-1-0) return to action Saturday night when they battle the Western Mustangs (3-2-0). Puck drop is set for 7:30pm at the Memorial Centre.

Waterloo 1 @ Toronto 4
Third-year forward Patrick Marsh scored one goal and added one assist in helping the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team to a 4-1 victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Friday night (Oct. 24) at Varsity Arena.
With the win, the Blues improve to 2-3-0, while Waterloo drops to 4-2-0 in the early goings of the regular season.
Second-year defenceman Corey Jackson opened the scoring 11:16 into the second period as he sent a wrist shot from the point through traffic to beat Warriors goaltender Chris Hurry.
Toronto extended their lead just over two minutes later as third-year forward and Clarkson University transfer Patrick Marsh notched his first goal in the Blue and White, capitalizing on a weird bounce in front of the Waterloo net.
The Warriors cut the deficit with just three seconds remaining in the second as third-year forward Brett Mackie banged in a rebound off a Stephen Silas point shot.
U of T led 2-1 at the second intermission.
The Blues quickly restored the two-goal advantage as assistant captain Jeff Brown buried the puck off a Marsh rebound on the powerplay just 1:46 into the third.
Toronto killed off numerous penalties in the third period and assistant captain Michael Markovic added an empty netter with 1:03 remaining to seal Toronto's second win of the season.
Brett Willows posted 31 saves, while Michael Nishi added 16 in the victory.
The Varsity Blues return to action this Sunday, October 26 as they head to Waterloo, Ont., to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

Ryerson 3 @ Waterloo 6
The Ryerson Rams have a volatile offensive attack that can erupt at any time. Unfortunately for the Waterloo Warriors, one of those times was Saturday night.
Daniel Clairmont scored twice, and five other Rams had two-point nights as Ryerson topped the Warriors 6-3 on Saturday night at the Columbia Icefield Arena in Waterloo.
The loss is Waterloo's second in a row, dropping them to 4-3-0 on the season. The Rams, meanwhile, won their second game in a row to improve their record to an identical 4-3-0. The teams are now tied for third in the OUA West Division at the quarter-pole of the season.
Andrew Smith (Kitchener) registered a goal and an assist for the Warriors, while Justin Larson (Buckhorn) and Chris Chappell (Pickering) also added tallies. Mike Morrison (Hamilton) took the loss in goal, stopping 28 shots, while Troy Passingham made 37 saves in earning the win for Ryerson.
The Warriors came out of the gate strong in the first period, as they outshot the Rams 14-9. Larson's goal was the only one of the first 20 minutes, and the Warriors took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Rams exploded in the second period, outscoring the Warriors 4-1 in the middle frame. Ryerson got goals from Mitch Gallant, Domenic Alberga, Andreas Tsogkas, and Michael Fine in the second, while Chappell was the only Warrior to find the back of the net in the middle frame. The visitors scored a power play goal and a shorthanded goal - the first of two on the night - to take a 4-2 lead heading into the third.
The Warriors had a chance to get back into the game early in the third when they went to the man-advantage, but the Rams turned the tables when Clairmont scored a short-handed goal to make it 5-2. Smith and Clairmont exchanged late goals to round out the scoring.
The Warriors will now turn their focus to a northern road trip next weekend, when they travel to take on the Laurentian Voyageurs on Friday, October 31 before facing the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday, November 1. Catch both games on OUA TV.

UQTR 4 @ York 5
The York University Lions men's hockey team topped the OUA East division-leading UQTR Patriotes by a score of 5-4 after a thrilling match between the two teams at Canlan Ice Sports on Saturday (Oct. 25).
The Patriotes came into this match with five wins and no losses, but the Lions snapped that streak with an impressive display on the rink.
The Lions' victory was inspired by a tremendous performance by rookie defender Derek Sheppard (Ajax, Ont.), who was involved in three of the goals, scoring two of them himself.
Five minutes into the game, Lions goaltender Chris Perugini (King City, Ont.) dove for a stray puck that would have otherwise been converted to a goal.
At 7:59, Adam Logozzo (Woodbridge, Ont.) opened the scoring after receiving a pass from Sheppard and firing past the goalie. Sheppard and Tyler Mort (Keswick, Ont.) were credited with the assists.
With 8:36 left to play, the Patriotes forced an equalizer through Thomas Martin after Felix Plouffe sent the goalie scrambling.
Three minutes later, the Lions responded with a goal from Sheppard, who slid past defenders and scored a solo goal to restore the team's lead.
Just before the end of the frame, Patriotes forward Marc-Olivier Mimar scored a similar goal to their previous one. The attackers had Perugini and defenders scrambling as they capitalized with another equalizer amidst the confusion.
The Patriotes dominated the attack during a power play at the last minute. Perugini saved a dangerous shot before the whistle blew, signalling the end to an exciting first period that had the score at 2-2.
Five minutes into the second period, the home team increased the pressure on their offence. However, their chances were compromised due to player penalties.
Dylan Smoskowitz (Richmond Hill, Ont.) took advantage of the power play eight minutes in by taking the lead once more. The goal was a result of a good team effort from Michael Santini (Woodbridge, Ont.) and Mort, who were credited with the assists.
Santini bagged a goal of his own with 6:32 left to play in the period. Paul Sohor (East St. Paul, Man.) released a long pass from the defensive half which found Smoskowitz, who provided the pass for Santini to tap into the goal.
The Patriotes responded with a goal of their own at 15:21 through Martin, his second of the night. The team diligently kept possession in the build-up that resulted in the goal.
Sheppard continued to perform on the ice, passing through three defenders and releasing a shot that went barely wide.
Rookie forward Colton Vannucci (Calgary) hustled for the puck during the power play at 17:40. A defender came to intercept, but Trevor Petersen (Thornhill, Ont.) interfered to recover the team's possession. The puck fell to Vannucci, who sent the puck to the centre for Sheppard to convert to make the score 5-3 in favour of the home team.
The Patriotes thought they scored a fourth just when the buzzer sounded, but the referees conferred and the goal was disallowed, leaving the Patriotes trailing by two at the end of the second frame.
At 8:50 of the final period, the Patriotes scored again to keep the game alive. Patriotes forward Tommy Giroux received a pass from Tommy Tremblay and fired it towards the net. Perugini got a slight touch to it but was not able to keep it out of the goal.
The final three minutes of the game saw both teams trying to score on each other as the puck traveled from end to end. The Patriotes were unable to find an equalizer as Perugini remained steadfast in his post to secure the win.
The Lions will continue competition against the OUA East next week when they head out on the road for a game against the McGill Redmen in Montreal on Saturday (Nov. 1) at 7pm.

Concordia 2 @ Brock 5
Admitting you have a problem takes guts – especially when you're a University athlete, and even more so when you're a hockey player.
But that's exactly what Sammy Banga did last season. The Badgers forward was fighting something and was finally diagnosed with Dysthymia, a mood disorder similar to depression but less severe and with longer lasting symptoms.
Fast forward a few months and Banga says he's feeling great. And his play on the ice is proof of that.
The 22-year old scored three goals in two games over the weekend – both Brock wins – including a 5-2 win over the Concordia Stingers Saturday night at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
Banga now leads the Badgers with six goals on the season.
"I approach every game the same, but I definitely have more confidence this year," said the Windsor native and Criminology/Sociology major. "They (coaching staff) expect a lot out of me this year after we lost two of our top scorers last year."
Banga is quick to credit his teammates with his success and comfort level this season.
"The guys have been good, they've been very supporitive," Banga explained. "I think I'm dealing with it (anxiety) pretty well. It's carried itself. It's my second year now and it's made things easier because I know what to expect both on and off the ice. Hockey's good and school's good too. I've conquered it so far. I'm proud of myself for that."
As for athletes or hockey players not getting sick, or admitting they have problems, Banga is quick to point out it's exactly the opposite.
"People don't realize I'm here more then I'm at school. We're here (arena) so many hours of the day, so many hours of the week. And a lot of that stress is translated to hockey. And then there's school stress, so it's definitely a bit of both. "
Brock Head Coach Murray Nystrom says Banga knows his role with the team.
"(Sammy) understands his strengths as an offensive player, particularly below the dots ," Nystrom said. "He's got a great nose for the net. He's got great hands and he knows where everybody else is on the ice. I think one of the things we can help him be successful is to getting the pucks into those areas for him, and then let him do his thing. And he did it this weekend, consistently."
Banga's powerplay goal on Saturday opened the scoring for Brock who led Concordia 4-0 midway through the second period.
Andrew Radjenovic, who leads the Badgers in points with nine, scored twice but should have been credited with the hat-trick after his one-time slapshot ripped through the mesh of the goal. Replays clearly showed the puck went through the mesh but the officials on the ice disagreed.
Jordan Gignac and Dylan MacEachern had the other goals for the Badgers who improved to (2-3-1) on the season. The Stingers fell to (3-5-0).
Adrian Volpe made 24 saves to pick up the win in goal.
Brock visits McGill next Friday night before playing a pair of games in Thunder Bay against Lakehead the following weekend. The Badgers next home game is Friday November 14th against Carleton. Game time at the Seymour-Hannah Centre is 7:15 pm.
"We're trying to make up some of those points we lost early, but this weekend, hopefully we're finding our game at the right time," said Nystrom.

Western 1 @ Queen's 3
KINGSTON, Ont. (October 25, 2014) - The men's hockey team suffered their second loss of the season, falling 3-1 against the Western Mustangs at the Memorial Centre on Saturday night.
Both squads were able to generate scoring opportunities early and often in the first frame but goaltenders Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) of the Gaels and Greg Dodds of the Mustangs were perfect for the first twenty.
The Gaels opened the scoring in the second with a power play tally from Spencer Abraham (Campbellville, Ont.). Abraham's point shot found its way through the screen and into the back of the net to give Queen's the 1-0 advantage. The Gaels had an opportunity to quickly add to their lead but Darcy Greenaway's (Wilton, Ont.) breakaway chance was denied by the pad of Dodds. The Mustangs were able to capitalize on the power play and knot the score after Kyle De Coste completed a tic-tac-toe passing play.
Western quickly grabbed the lead in the final frame as Steve Reese tallied his fourth of the season. Queen's had numerous quality scoring opportunities midway through the final frame on a five-on-three power play but could not bury the equalizer past Dodds. The Gaels continued to generate offensive pressure but could not solve the Western goaltender as the Mustangs added an empty net goal for the 3-1 victory.
Final shots for the game totalled 49-41 in favour of Queen's. Bailie suffered the loss after collecting 38 saves while Dodds earned an impressive 48 save win.
The Gaels (3-2-0) return to action Friday night when they travel to Trois-Rivieres, Quebec to take on the No.4 UQTR Patriots (5-0-0).

Windsor 2 @ Lakehead 1
Lakehead got on the board first on a power play goal by Jake Wright just 6:44 into the game, but Windsor's Drew Palmer and Isak Quakenbush scored two goals just 36 seconds apart to give the Lancers a 2-1 lead near the midway point of the first period.
Mike Hammond replied for the Thunderwolves less than a minute later by beating Windsor goalie Parker Van Buskirk to even the score, but at Matt Beaudoin blast at 13:44 eluded Wolves' netminder Justin McDonald to give Windsor a 3-2 lead heading into the second.
Lakehead's Jake Wright notched his second power play goal of the game at 7:48 of the middle frame to knot the score at 3-3, but Dylan Denhomme put the Lancers up 4-3 at the 18:06 mark.
Then with only 17 seconds left in the period, Lakehead's Kelin Ainsworth fired a one-timer just underneath the crossbar to deadlock the score at 4-4 heading into the third period.
The Wolves built on that momentum when Keith Grondin fooled Van Buskirk with wrist shot high on the blocker side 1:19 into the third, and when Nathan Bruyere scored just over two minutes later to give Lakehead a 6-4 lead, back-up goaltender Taylor Speed was sent in to replace Van Buskirk in the Windsor net.
Penalties proved costly for the Wolves however, as Palmer drew the Lancers to within one goal at 7:24, and then Ryan Green tied the game up with only 1:18 left on the clock, with both Windsor goals coming when Lakehead was a man short.
At 3:52 of the overtime period, Windsor's Spencer Pommels netted the winner for the second night in row to give the Lancers the victory.
Shots on goal in the wide-open affair were 40-37 in Windsor's favor.
The Molson Three Stars of the game were:
1. Kenny Bradford, Windsor
2. Jake Wright, Lakehead
3. Keith Grondin, Lakehead
The Wolves will travel to Ottawa next weekend for a pair of games at Carleton on Friday and Saturday night.

Guelph 4 @ UOIT 1
OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT men's hockey team battled hard on Saturday night but failed to pick up their second win of the weekend as the Guelph Gryphons earned a 4-1 victory over the Ridgebacks.
With UOIT looking for the equalizer late in the third period, Guelph would score two late goals including an empty netter to clinch their third win of the season.
With the loss, UOIT drops to 3-3-1 this season and 2-2-0 on home-ice. Guelph has won three of their last four games and is 3-3-2 on the year.
UOIT was first to get on the board on Saturday, with Cameron Yuill (Wellington, Ont.) scoring a shorthanded goal with thirty seconds to go in the first period. Yuill, on a partial breakaway, made a nice move to beat Guelph's Andrew D'Agostini for UOIT's fourth shorthanded goal of the season, which leads the OUA.
Guelph would manage to rebound over the next twenty minutes as they scored two second period goals, outshooting UOIT 14-9 in the frame.
In the final stanza, the Ridgebacks applied plenty of pressure in the offensive zone, but could not find a way to beat the former Peterborough Pete goaltender a second time.
Making his first appearance of the season, UOIT goaltender Colin Dzijacky (Thunder Bay, Ont.) made 31 saves in the losing effort. Brendan O'Neill (Ilderton, Ont.), who had started the previous six games for UOIT, had the night off after getting banged around against Western one night earlier.
D'Agostini stopped 33 of 34 UOIT shots on goal.
UOIT will head to Quebec next weekend for games against Concordia on Friday, Oct. 31 and UQTR on Saturday, Nov. 1.

Toronto 1 @ Laurier 3
WATERLOO, Ont. (October 26, 2014) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's hockey team put an end to their three-game losing streak on Sunday night as they defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues 3-1 at the Waterloo Recreation Complex.
Team captain Tyler Stothers of Oakville, Ont., led the way for the purple and gold with a goal and an assist. Freshman Zach Lorentz of Waterloo, Ont., also had a two points night as he registered a pair of assists. One of those assists led to defenceman Matt Provost of Oakville, Ont., scoring the game winner less than six minutes into the third period.
Center Ryan Lopes of Brampton, Ont., scored the third goal for the Hawks to put the game to bed late in the period.
Laurier's short-handed unit came up big in this game. Holding the Blues power play unit to zero goals on three attempts on the night. Two of the Hawks penalties came in the final frame and both of them were in the first three minutes of the third period. Laurier at one point was down two men, but made sure no shots went into the net.
A major reason for the Golden Hawks success was thanks to the amazing goaltending from Christopher Festarini from Oakville, Ont. The freshman made 35 saves out of the 36 shots he saw on the night.
Toronto's goaltender Michael Nishi of Toronto, Ont., picked up the loss on the night, but had a very solid performance. The starting goalie made 30 of 33 saves in the game.
The 2-3-0 Golden Hawks will hit the road next to take on the 3-3-1 Nipissing Lakers Friday night on Halloween, October 31. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. at Memorial Gardens.
