Header by Deluzio keeps Mustangs undefeated
LONDON, Ont. – Down by one goal with 20 minutes left before the final whistle, Tianna Deluzio headed the ball into the Lions' net to tie the York Lions 1-1 on Sunday afternoon.
"I think it was probably a fair result. York's a very good team. They were tough to break down," said head coach Martin Painter. "When we play teams like that, we're not going to walk on the field and dominate and destroy them. It's going to be really tight games when one goal, one little mistake, on little piece of quality is the difference."
The draw allows both teams to remain undefeated. The Mustangs and the Lions now have records of 7-0-3 and 7-0-1, respectively. Western holds down second place in the OUA West with 24 points, just a single point behind Laurier, while the Lions occupy third with 22 points although they have two games in hand on the Mustangs and one on the Golden Hawks.
Deluzio's goal came in the 71st minute of the game. The Mustangs were granted a free kick near the half and used the chance to give a quick pass to Meghan Glibbery. Crossing the ball in front of the York net, Duluzio used her head to record the first and only purple and white point of the game.
Expecting a tough game, the Mustangs played hard right out of the gates. They kept possession of the ball and pressed into the York end for much of the first 20 minutes. However, at twenty five minutes into the game the York Lions made their way into the Mustangs end. A well placed corner by York's Sarah Wong to the head of last year's CIS MVP, Nour Ghoneim, allowed the Lions to get a 1-0 lead.
The Lions used the momentum from the goal to keep up the pressure on Western for the remainder of the half. Play was concentrated in the Mustang end, but the purple and white defence reacted by forcing numerous offsides for their opponents.
With a one goal disadvantage heading into the second half, the Mustangs upped their intensity. They spent more time in the York end, outshooting their opponents six to one, but Deluzio's header was the only one to make it past York's goalie.
Following the final goal of the match neither team was able to assert dominance, instead taking turns controlling the play.
"The intensity was definitely high. York's always a good team and we always like playing them because it's a good quality game. I think the intensity's high because it's just two good teams trying to be the best," said goal scorer Deluzio.
The women are back in action at Mustangs Field on Saturday, October 3, at 1 p.m to face the McMaster Marauders in their final home game of the regular season. The Marauders are one of only three teams to earn a draw against Western this season and their second matchup of the year is sure to be an exciting contest.

Golden Hawks spoil Marauders Homecoming
The McMaster women's soccer team knew it was in tough against the undefeated Laurier Golden Hawks, as the No. 4 team in the CIS top-ten came to Hamilton on Sunday afternoon.
Laurier got on the scoreboard early by pressing the Marauders and forcing a corner kick in the 5th minute, The cross from the corner then deflected into the McMaster goal off a maroon defender for an own-goal and a 1-0 lead for the Hawks.
Laurier continued to take advantage of their chances and All-Canadian striker Emily Brown scored twice in the 25th and the 43rd minutes to provide a comfortable 3-0 margin at intermission.
Needing to open things up in the second half, the Marauders cut into the deficit in the 53rd minute when Steph Roberts buried a perfect cross to make it 3-1.
Still pushing forward, McMaster suffered a blow in the 57th minute when Kelsey Orlando was issued a second yellow card, reducing the Marauders to 10 players. Despite being down a player, the Marauders continued to press the attack and Anne Yeboah rifled a shot from distance that caromed off the goalpost and stayed out.
In the 67th minute, Laurier's Nicole Lyon stepped around a Mac defender and deftly scored to restore the three-goal advantage.
But the youthful Marauders made the last 10 minutes very interesting as Roberts got her head on a free kick for her second goal of the match in the 84th minute. Having scored two goals already, Roberts was marked very closely by the Hawk defense and when she was taken down in the box in the 87th minute, the referee pointed to the spot for a penalty kick. Anne Yeboah stepped up and her strike brought the Marauders within a goal at 4-3.
With McMaster desperate for an equalizer with time running out, Laurier took advantage on the counterattack and Abby Zamec found some space and scored the Hawks' fifth goal in the 89th minute to complete the scoring.
With the victory Laurier improves to eight wins and one draw on the season, while McMaster falls to a record of two wins, four losses and three draws. The Marauders will next hit the road for games at Western and Windsor on October 3 and 4.

Villegas nets late goal to lead Warriors past Badgers
Natalia Villegas' (Kitchener) first career CIS goal couldn't have come at a better time as the first year midfielder netted the lone goal on Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field to lead Waterloo past Brock 1-0.
After a relatively quiet first half for both teams, the intensity picked up in the second with Brock having the best opportunity to go ahead in the 50th minute as Megan Salisbury found herself all alone in the box but Warriors keeper Kala Studens (Sault Ste. Marie) came up big with a sprawling save to keep the game scoreless.
The teams continued to exchange chances until some nice ball work by keeper-turned-forward Krystna Brudnicki and Madison McDonald (Kitchener) created a golden opportunity for Villegas who made no mistake on the off-speed shot. The goal came in the 76th minute to put the black and gold up 1-0.
Brock would not let up and in extra time had a chance to even the game with Studens out of the net but defender Stephanie Penta (Kitchener) was there to bail out her keeper and preserve the 1-0 victory for the home side.
Waterloo will look to extend their winning streak when they battle the winless Algoma Thunderbirds in Sault Ste. Marie next weekend.

Gaels dethrone Excalibur to earn weekend split
Kingston, Ont. (September 27, 2015)- First-year forward Sarah Nixon scored two goals, and the Queen's Gaels women's soccer team bounced back from a loss on Saturday against the UOIT Ridgebacks by topping the Trent Excalibur 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Miklas-McCarney Field.
One day after getting shutout by UOIT, the Gaels (4-2-3) quickly re-discovered their scoring touch, using two quick markers within the first 15 minutes of the contest to build a sizeable advantage over the winless Excalibur (0-7-0). Tara Bartram (Vancouver) notched her team-leading fourth goal of the season, redirecting a pass from Nixon (Oakville, Ont.) on a broken play in Trent's penalty area to put the home side up 1-0 in the 10th minute of play. Queen's doubled its lead just five minutes later, as Nixon drove home what was her second tally this fall, driving the ball to the low right-hand corner.
The Excalibur seemed to find their feet as the play levelled out through the middle portion of the half, though the Gaels maintained control of the majority of the play. Minutes after sliding the ball just wide of the right post, Haley Giles made up for earlier miss in front of the Gaels goal, slicing the lead down to one just before the half-time whistle.
The Gaels pushed their advantage back up to two early in the second half, as Nixon tapped in her second of the match off a rebound in the 47th minute. Trent goalkeeper Brandi Riggs was quickly tested with two more shots soon after, but was equal to the task in keeping the Excalibur within striking distance. The reprieve was short-lived, however, and the Gaels would not be denied an insurance marker as Rachel Radu (Ottawa) muscled the ball through Riggs to solidify Queen's fourth win of the season.
