Copeland-Dinan hits winner for Ravens as Women's Soccer defeats Gaels 3-2
OTTAWA, ON – Carleton's sophomore transfer Emily Copeland-Dinan struck a late go-ahead goal against Queen's as the Ravens defeated the Golden Gaels women's soccer team by a score of 3-2. The Ravens got the revenge they were seeking for last year's playoff loss to Queen's.
The women battled hard to overcome a first half deficit which saw them trailing 2-1 going into the locker room.
Carleton had a promising beginning when 5th year senior Tina Lacava opened the scoring in the 17th minute.
However, with three rookies in the starting lineup, including McPherson and Zutrauen in defence, the team looked a bit nervous closing out the opening half.
Queen's tied the game at 1-1 when Brittany Almeida notched the leveler in the 23rd minute. Queen's took the lead in the 34th minute when Jessie de Boer scored from a free-kick following a Carleton foul just outside of the box.
"The rookies had some jitters in the first half, as did the team, but they gained confidence as the game progressed. It was great for them to get their first win against Queen's," reflected Ravens head coach Raz El-Asmar.
First-year forward Tori MacFarlane came on as a substitute which proved to be the right call as she scored her first goal as a Raven to tie the game at 2-2, giving the Ravens life once more.
Copeland-Dinan buried her game-winner in the 73rd minute to complete the comeback over Queen's.
"It was nice to start the season with a win, especially against Queen's," said El-Asmar.
The Carleton coach attributed this first win of the season to the adjustments his defenders made at halftime as well as the inspirational play of holding midfielder and team captain, Veronica Mazzella.
The player of the game was Veronica Mazzella while a special mention goes out to Emily Copeland-Dinan for her late heroics.
1st year forward Kaitlyn Balfour was the third rookie to make her starting debut as a Raven today.
The women will face Nipissing in their next game on Friday, September 4th at 3 p.m. at MNP Park (formerly known as Keith Harris Stadium).

Nipissing bounces back in 3-2 win over Trent
The Nipissing Lakers soccer programs wrapped up their first weekend of action Sunday in Peterborough against the Trent Excalibur.
The women were coming off a loss Saturday and the men earned a tie, so both were looking to close out the weekend on a high note.
While it wasn't the start the Nipissing Lakers women's soccer team wanted, they sure bounced back quickly.
After suffering a loss in their first game of the season Saturday versus UOIT, the Lakers earned their first win of the campaign Sunday as they edged the Trent Excalibur 3-2, in Peterborough.

Ridgebacks fall to 1-1 with loss to Voyageurs
Coming off a huge 6-0 win on Saturday, the UOIT women's soccer team were unable to find the back of the net Sunday at home against Laurentian in their 2-0 loss.
Voyageur forward Sam Selkirk opened the scoring in the 25th minute, finishing the pass from Amanda Kwan.
Two quality chances were turned aside in the first half by Laurentian keeper Richele Greenwood, with multiple shots flying just over the crossbar. By halftime the Ridgebacks were unable to find the back of the net and continued to trail 1-0.
Greenwood was kept busy in the second half as UOIT increased their pressure, putting six shots on goal, but in the 84th minute the Voyageurs' Sarah Sanford scored on one of her teams two shots on goal in the second half.
The Ridgebacks were also in tough as starters Sara Voisin and Mikaela Tierney left the game in the 78th minute after colliding in the UOIT 18-yard box, just prior to the Voyageurs goal.
UOIT is now 1-1-0 on the season and will have the next two weeks off from OUA regular season play as their next conference game isn't until Sept. 12 in Ottawa against Carleton.
However, on Sept. 9 they will have their annual friendly against the Durham Lords, the Campus Cup, with the women's match scheduled for 7 p.m.

Laurier demolishes Algoma in weekend series
WATERLOO, Ont. (August 30, 2015) – Wilfrid Laurier women's soccer forward Emily Brown made OUA history this weekend as the Golden Hawks swept away the Algoma Thunderbirds in a weekend doubleheader at University Stadium.
Brown, the Waterloo, Ont., native who entered the year tied with former Queen's Gael and Toronto Varsity Blue Eilish McConnville for the OUA's modern day scoring record with 63 goals, took the mark all to herself with a five-goal effort in the two victories for the Hawks.
The five goals Brown netted, which give her 68 for her career with the purple and gold, were just a small part of the offence the Hawks unleashed on the Thunderbirds as they picked up an 18-1 victory on Saturday followed by a 15-0 victory on Sunday.
In Saturday's victory, nine different Hawks found the back of the net, highlighted by a four-goal effort from Nicole Lyon of Kitchener, Ont., and a hat-trick from Brown. For Brown, the record-breaking tally came in the 20th minute in Saturday's victory and gave Laurier a 4-0 lead at the time.
Other Hawks finding the scoresheet on Saturday included Julie Karn of Kitchener, Ont., Sarah Farano of Oakville, Ont., Katie Bishop of Surrey, B.C., and Jacky Normandeau of Uxbridge, Ont., all scoring twice while Suzanne Boroumand of Kitchener, Ont., Gagan Parhar of Surrey, B.C., and Abbey Zamec of London, Ont., all had singles. For Parhar, the goal was the first of her career with the Hawks in her first career start.
The 18 goals represent a new team record for the Hawks for most goals scored in a single game.
Algoma's lone goal in the contest came in the 87th minute as Taylor Bellini of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., was able to find the back of the net behind Hawks starting keeper Stacey Simmons of Woodstock, Ont.
Sunday's game was much of the same story expect this time the Hawks were able to Algoma off the scoresheet.
Leading the offensive charge once again was Lyon, who finished the game with a hat-trick, giving her seven goals through the first two games. She got the Hawks off to another flying start by scoring just 10 seconds into the contest.
Lyon had company in the hat-trick department as rookie Natalie Barry of Toronto, scored the first three goals of her career.
Joining in on the scoring fun were Parhar, Brown and Zamec, who each netted a pair, while Normandeau, Meena Sharif of Pickering, Ont., and rookie Valerie Gladiator of Waterdown, Ont., added singles. For Sharif, a fourth year veteran with the team, and Gladiator, the goals were the first of their careers.
The Hawks will look to keep their offence rolling next Saturday when they travel across University Ave. to take on the Waterloo Warriors (0-1-1). Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Warrior Field.

For much of Sunday's contest, McMaster's defenders successfully held a concerted York attack at bay. But a single crack in that armour – a lone goal in the 49th minute – was enough to see the Lions past the Marauders at Ron Joyce Stadium.
Nour Ghoneim scored the decisive tally for York, who won the first game of their OUA season. McMaster, meanwhile, remains winless after their opening weekend, with a point from two games.
The visiting Lions opened the match strongly, controlling possession from the opening whistle and pinning the Marauders inside their own half. Despite struggling to pass out the back, McMaster adeptly squashed York's scoring chances before they could develop, stepping well into passing lanes and heading well out of danger. The Lions best chance to open the scoring came in the 39th minute, when Francesca Pendulla stepped into a long-range effort and smashed it just over the crossbar. Possession remained in their favour, but the Lions were unable to break down the Marauders defending before the halftime whistle.
The breakthrough followed shortly after the resumption of play, as Ghoneim got onto the end of a set piece in the 49th minute and directed her header inside the near post and past McMaster goalkeeper Cristina Abbatangelo. Few chances followed for the Marauders in the minutes that remained, although rookie striker Maila Carboni once again showcased her work rate and strength at the front of the line. The single best opportunity for an equalizer on the hosts' part came when Sarah Fettah attempted an audacious long-range effort in the 72nd minute and narrowly scooped her shot over the crossbar.
For the most part, however, York was comfortable with the lead and saw out the victory without major incident.
McMaster comes away from their opening weekend with one point from two matches, and will look to improve their fortunes in a week's time, when they return to Ron Joyce Stadium for matches against the Windsor Lancers and Brock Badgers on Saturday, September 5 and Sunday, September 6 respectively.
