Lions slip past Warriors to extend lead in OUA West
On Friday evening (Oct. 16), the No. 2 nationally-ranked York University Lions women's soccer team closed off its last away game of the season with a 2-1 victory over the Waterloo Warriors.
The game was a tale of two halves. After a scoreless first half, the Lions were able to come back in the second half and bury two chances that put the team up 2-0.
The first goal came in the 53rd minute when midfielder Sarah Wong (Scarborough, Ont.) was able to find fellow midfielder Sydney Hoareau (Brampton, Ont.) with a pass off of Hoareau's third-man run. Then charging at the Warriors' net, Hoareau was able to beat the goalkeeper off of the dribble and place the ball between the posts.
Following up in the 59th minute, striker Nour Ghoneim (Aurora, Ont.) added to the lead with the second goal of the game. After rookie Kiyani Johnson (Brampton, Ont.) was able to leave her defender in the dust from a wicked display of pace on the right wing, Johnson had enough time to find Ghoneim at the edge of the box, who accurately passed the ball into the corner of the net.
Eager to narrow the score in the 67th minute, Waterloo's Kaitlyn Unger cut the score with a goal that just slipped into the back of the net off a pass into the box. However, despite their efforts the Warriors were no match for the nationally-ranked Lions, who finished the game with another win to add to their 12-0-1 record on the year.
The Lions remain one of only two teams in the OUA, and the only one in the West Division, with an undefeated mark on the year.
Up next for the Lions is a match-up against their rivals, the No. 6 Western Mustangs, at York Stadium on Sunday (Oct. 18) at 1pm. A win will all but ensure a first-place finish in the division for the Lions.

Ridgeback defence stands strong against Queen's
OSHAWA, Ont. – The wind was definitely a factor in the UOIT/Queen's women's soccer match that saw the two sides play to a scoreless draw Friday night at the Civic.
With the wind in their favour in the first half, UOIT had three shots on target while the Gaels did not register one. After flipping sides in the second half, things shifted in Queen's favour as they fired five shots on target while UOIT had none.
UOIT goalkeeper Helen Frampton (Toronto, Ont.) stopped all three shots she faced in the Ridgebacks ninth shutout of the season. The team has only allowed four goals against, the lowest total of any team across the OUA.
Nicole Zajac of Mississauga had all three Ridgeback shots on target. This marked her first time starting since her return from an injury in the summer.
With 23 points in 12 games played, UOIT sits in a tie for second place in the OUA eastern conference with the Laurentian Voyageurs. Queen's and Carleton trail by just two points as the four teams will battle down the stretch for the first round bye in the playoffs.
UOIT will return to the Oshawa Civic on Sunday afternoon when they host the RMC Paladins with kick-off taking place at 1p.m. In their first meeting of the year, UOIT won 1-0.
