No. 3 Laurier falls to No. 4 York in Top 10 battle
WATERLOO, Ont. (October 1, 2015) – The No. 3 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s soccer team suffered their first loss of the season on Thursday night as they fell 2-0 to the No. 4 York Lions at University Stadium.
WATERLOO, Ont. (October 1, 2015) – The No. 3 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's soccer team suffered their first loss of the season on Thursday night as they fell 2-0 to the No. 4 York Lions at University Stadium.
The difference came late in the first half when Charlene D'Mello of Mississauga, Ont., managed to beat Hawks keeper Ashley Almeida of Burlington, Ont., in the 44th minute for her first goal of the season.
Laurier was unable to rally in the second half and the Lions put the game away in the 87th minute thanks to a goal from Nour Ghoneim of Aurora, Ont.
Despite the scoreline, Almeida had an outstanding game in net for the Hawks as she kept her team in the contest for much of the night. Almeida finished the contest with a career-high 11 saves as the Lions outshot the Hawks 13-3.
Taylor Grant of Brampton, Ont., earned the win in goal for York.
With the loss, Laurier sees their record drop to 8-1-1 on the season and they are now tied for top spot in the OUA West division with the Lions. York has a game in hand on the Hawks as their record sits at 8-0-1.
The purple and gold will look to bounce back from the loss on Sunday, October 4 when they host the No. 6 Western Mustangs (7-0-3) at University Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
