Brown, Wilkie named OUA Athletes of the Week

FEMALE: Emily Brown (Waterloo, Ont.) – 5th yr. – Laurier Golden Hawks – Soccer
Emily Brown (Waterloo, Ont.) and the No. 4 ranked Laurier Golden Hawks extended their unbeaten streak to nine games to open the season this past weekend with a trio of wins.
The fifth-year Business student-athlete found the back of the net three times in three victories over Guelph, Brock and McMaster.
On Tuesday, Brown opened the scoring in the 25th minutes to give the Golden Hawks an early 1-0 lead. Guelph would tie things up in the 68th minute but Laurier would answer just over a minute later and eventually take the game 2-1.
In a 1-0 victory over the Brock Badgers on Friday, Brown recorded seven shots.
After a rare brief hiatus from the score sheet, Brown was back on Sunday with two goals in a wild 5-3 victory over the McMaster Marauders. Brown’s pair of goals in the opening half now give her 13 on the season to lead CIS.
Next up, Brown and the No. 4 ranked Golden Hawks will host the No. 5 ranked York Lions at University Stadium this Thursday, Oct. 1 at 6:00pm.
MALE: Alex Wilkie (Almonte, Ont.) – 3rd yr – Queen's Gaels – Cross Country
Alex Wilkie (Almonte, Ont.) of the Queen’s men’s cross country team dominated the field on Saturday, finishing atop the podium at the Western International Invitational.
The third-year Health Studies student-athlete crossed the finish line in a time of 24:35, a full ten seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
Over the course of the 8 km race, Wilkie averaged 3:05 / kilometer.
Wilkie’s strong performance helped the Gaels to a fifth place overall finish in the team standings with a total of 146 points.
The No. 8 ranked Gaels will now compete in the Lehigh University Invitational on Oct. 2 before returning to OUA competition at their hometown race, the Queen's Invitational on Oct. 17.
