Mustangs remain undefeated with win over Algoma
SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. - The Western Mustangs women's soccer team responded to an early opposing goal on Sunday afternoon at Superior Heights Field by scoring 16 of their own, including four by Paige Howard, culminating in a 16-1 victory against the Algoma Thunderbirds.
The victory gives the Mustangs sole possesion of first place in the OUA West Division and marks their fourth win of an undefeated season.
Howard was not the only Mustang to score multiple goals. After Julia Crnjac recorded Western's first goal of the day, she put up two more goals to record a hat trick. Amanda Boyle also recorded a hat trick, while Lauren Winquist found the back of the Thunderbird net twice and Tianna Deluzio, Abbey Young, Stefanie Di Tella, and Jess Friend each added one point to the scoreboard.
After Algoma's Taylor Bellini's opened the scoring in the 11th minute, Crnjac answered back seven minutes later to tie the game at 1-1. The Mustangs used the momentum from Crnjac's goal to take control of the game, with the Mustangs defence preventing the host Thunderbirds from taking another shot on keeper Tori Edgar for the remainder of the contest.
While Edgar got the chance to relax, Western put the pressure on Algoma's keeper Lauren Moore by sending 14 more shots her way in the first half alone. Struggling to staunch the steady onslaught of purple and white shots, the score was 5-1 heading into halftime.
Returning from the break, it was more of the same for the Mustangs, firing 14 shots at Algoma with 11 of those turning into goals to give Western a 16-1 victory.
The Mustangs will now get set to face the undefeated Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, September 12. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Mustang Field.

The offence of the Gee-Gees women's soccer team came roaring into life on Sunday afternoon, taking a 3-0 first half lead over Laurentian before finishing the game with a 5-1 final score. Pilar Khoury scored Ottawa's opening two goals, while Julia Francki added one in the second half to total three this season.
Ottawa's record is now 2-0-1, while Laurentian suffered its first loss of the year and falls to 3-1-0.
Khoury teamed with Faythe Lou and Brooklyn McAlear-Fanus, driving the ball to the net as Ottawa controlled the ball for the majoirty of the first half. Backs Sabrina Wahab and Hannah Landry used their physicality to help hold Laurentian to just two shots on net in the first half of play.
Delaney Rickert-Hall scored her first goal of the season at the 28 minute mark to make it 3-0 Ottawa. Victoria Marchand scored the fifth goal for Ottawa at 83 minutes before Laurentian got on the board in extra time to spoil the shut out.
Overall, Ottawa had a bounce-back performance from Saturday's 1-0 win over Nipissing, winning 50-50 balls and fighting through the intense heat and humidity to hustle in all parts of the field.
Ottawa will continue its homestand this coming weekend with games on Saturday against Trent and Sunday against UOIT. Both games are set to start at 1 p.m. Tickets are available on tickets.geegees.ca and single game tickets are $2 cheaper when purchased online at least two hours before the game.
After collecting its first win of the year on Saturday, the McMaster women's soccer team completed the weekend sweep by beating the Brock Badgers 1-0 on a sweltering day at Ron Joyce Stadium.
With both teams showing good pace to start the game, it was the Marauders that got on the scoreboard first when Amy Froome blocked a Brock clearing attempt and crossed to Alexandra Riganelli, who directed the ball past Brock keeper Lauren MacCulloch in the 26th minute.
The Badgers came close to an equalizer before halftime when Olivia Schramowsky broke in alone, but McMaster keeper Laura Blackburn came out and made a great save to maintain the clean sheet.
The second-half saw both teams suffering from the severe heat, but McMaster managed to carry most of the play and generated several scoring chances.
Blackburn was only tested once in the second half and played the angle well to deny Badger Stephanie Sanders, who made a nice run down the right sideline. Julia McKinley had another chance late as Brock made a push to tie, but her shot from distance sailed over the net.
Marauder Maila Carboni was a constant threat and had two glorious chances to add to the lead in the second half, but just could not find the net.
In stoppage time, the Marauders just missed getting a second marker when Anne Yeboah got the ball in the box but ran out of space as MacCulloch closed quickly.
The Marauders will now enjoy the Labour Day holiday after getting the two weekend wins and prepare to play next at York on September 10th.

Ryerson draws at Queen's to earn 4th point of weekend
KINGSTON, Ont. - The Ryerson Rams women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw against the Queen's Gaels on Sunday afternoon in Kingston to earn four of six possible points this weekend.
The Rams outshot the Gaels 8-6 but Queen's landed more on target, forcing Ryerson keeper Alex Armstrong (Toronto) into four saves. Sunday was Armstrong's second cleansheet performance in as many days.
Queen's keeper Michaila Frawley made three saves at the other end of the pitch.
Ryerson pressed early and had six corner kick attempts in the first half to show for it but the Rams were unable to solve Frawley.
The Rams shots on target came from defender Katrina Gonyea (Aurora, Ont.) and midfielders Val Muniz Saavedra (Toronto) and Alessia Carvalho (Newmarket, Ont.).

Johnson's late goal propels Lions over Lancers
The York University Lions women's soccer team defeated the Windsor Lancers by a score of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 6) at York Stadium.
The first half saw the Lions control the pace of the game by dominating the possession of the ball, reminiscent of the childhood game of keep-away. Head coach Carmine Isacco put on a clinic on how to move the ball and to play mistake free soccer throughout the opening half.
In the 54th minute in the second half, the Lancers opened the scoring with a tally poked by York goalkeeper Taylor Grant (Brampton, Ont.) after a defensive breakdown that led to an odd-man advantage in the direction of York's net, ultimately leading to the opening goal by Lacey Marcoux.
The 2014 OUA West MVP Nour Ghoneim (Aurora, Ont.) scored the equalizer in the 62nd minute after York drew a foul inside the box. Ghoneim stepped up and placed the ball into the right hand corner of the net, which was just out of the reach of sprawling Windsor keeper Krystin Lawrence. Ghoneim is tied for first in scoring on the Lions with her fourth goal in three regular season games.
Freshman sensation Kiyani Johnson (Markham, Ont.) came on in the second half and made an immediate impact, scoring the go-ahead goal in the 72nd minute after being sprung free all alone and went crossbar down. Johnson's goal not only gave York the lead but also momentum. She now has three goals in her first three games as a Lion.
The feisty and relentless play of defender Peyton Lozzi (King City, Ont.) was applauded by the York faithful on Sunday. Lozzi displayed intense work ethic and energy that was absorbed by her fellow teammates, this being used as fuel to propel the Lions to their victory.
The Lions remain undefeated on the season, one of three teams in the OUA West with a 3-0-0 mark, and they will next be tested on Thursday (Sept. 10) when McMaster travels to York to take on the Lions at 5pm at York Stadium. The two squads played each other on Aug. 30 in Hamilton, Ont., and the Lions came away with a 1-0 victory to open the season.
