Murchie scores winner as Laurier edges Guelph 2-1
GUELPH, Ont. (September 22, 2015) - Midfielder Maxine Murchie scored the game-winning goal to propel the No. 4 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks to a 2-1 win over the Guelph Gryphons on Tuesday afternoon.
GUELPH, Ont. (September 22, 2015) - Midfielder Maxine Murchie scored the game-winning goal to propel the No. 4 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks to a 2-1 win over the Guelph Gryphons on Tuesday afternoon.
Murchie, a native of Kitchener, Ont., gave Laurier the lead in the 70th minute, just a minute after the Gryphons had knotted the game at one. It was also the first goal of the season for the third year economics major.
Fifth year forward Emily Brown of Waterloo, Ont., had given Laurier the lead in the opening 45 minutes of play as she scored her 11th goal of the season in the 26th minute. For Brown, the goal pushes her past teammate Nicole Lyon of Kitchener, Ont., for the conference scoring lead and sees her career goal total rise to an impressive 74.
Courtney Whiteside of Guelph, Ont., scored the Gryphons lone tally.
In goal, rookie keeper Ashley Ameida of Burlington, Ont., picked up her fourth win of the season as she turned away five of the six shots she faced. Her counterpart, Holly Miller of Oakville, Ont., stopped only one of the three shots on goal she faced. In total, Guelph outshot the Hawks by a count of 10-8.
The victory moves Laurier (6-0-1) to within a single point of the division-leading Western Mustangs (6-0-2), who have a game in hand on the Hawks. As for Guelph, they drop to 4-3-0 on the year, good four fourth in the division.
Up next for the Hawks, they will return home for Homecoming weekend as they host the Brock Badgers on Friday, September 25. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at University Stadium.
