Fifth-year defender Taylor Lyons scored the lone goal to lead the York University Lions women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the McMaster Marauders on Thursday evening (Sept. 10) at York Stadium.
Lyons (Brampton, Ont.), playing in her first game of the season after returning to the line-up this week, found the back of the net in the 66th minute, converting a header on a beautiful cross pass from fellow fifth-year defender Shannon Wood (Brampton, Ont.).
As they have done all season, the Lions controlled possession for most of the match and had several offensive chances. Overall, they fired 11 shots towards McMaster's net and had seven corner kicks. Going the other way, the Marauders had three shots and one corner kick.
Reigning OUA most valuable player Nour Ghoneim (Aurora, Ont.), the team's current scoring leader, had her chances in this contest with five shots, including three on goal that were saved by Christina Abbatangelo. Abbatangelo finished with six saves, three in each half.
York goalkeeper Taylor Grant (Brampton, Ont.) earned her second cleansheet of the season, both coming against McMaster. She made two saves in the match.
With the win, the Lions improved to 4-0-0 on the year and remain one of three teams in the OUA West Division with an undefeated record. McMaster fell to 2-2-1 with the loss.
Next up for the Lions is a game on Sunday (Sept. 13) against the Guelph Gryphons, their final contest at York Stadium until next month. Kick-off is set for 1pm.
