Johnson, a first-year psychology student from Markham, Ont., scored three goals in two games on Labour Day weekend to help the Lions improve to 3-0 in conference play and earn a spot in the national Top-10 rankings, in 10th position. On Saturday, the rookie striker entered the contest after halftime and struck in the 70th and 82nd minutes in a 7-1 victory against Brock. The following day, Johnson once again joined the action after the break and tallied the game-winner in the 72nd minute as York edged Windsor 2-1.
Ottawa rugby player Irene Patrinos and Manitoba soccer player Bruna Mavignier were also nominated for the women's award.
Petrovic, a third-year business commerce student from Sombor, Serbia, scored twice in UOIT's only contest of the past week, including the game-winner, to help the Ridgebacks (2-0-1) to a 4-2 success over Trent and the best start in program history. With his team trailing 1-0 early, the 6-foot-2 midfielder evened the score at the 25-minute mark before potting his second of the match in the 53rd minute for a 3-1 lead.
Craig Gorman, a soccer player from Victoria, was the other male nominee.
