WATERLOO, Ont. (January 28, 2016) – Amanda Smith made 33 saves for her second shutout in three starts this season to lead the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's hockey team to a 2-0 win over the UOIT Ridgebacks on Thursday night at the Waterloo Recreation Complex.
Smith, a native of Burlington, Ont., was particularly strong in the third period as she turned aside all 13 shots she faced, while her team provided her with all the offence they needed to sweep the home-and-home series with UOIT.
Rookie Kaitlyn Hatzes of Whitby, Ont., netted the game-winning goal early in the third period for the purple and gold as she deflected in a Jessie Hurrell (Palgrave, Ont.) pass for her second of the season.
Jessica Prevette of Mississauga, Ont., later added an insurance marker as Laurier took all six points from the Ridgebacks this year following a 3-1 win in Oshawa, Ont., last Sunday.
Cassie Charette of Ottawa, took the loss in goal for UOIT as she stopped 31 of the 33 shots sent her way.
Laurier (9-1-7-1), who have now won three of their last four games, leapfrog over the idle Toronto Varsity Blues and move into a tie for seventh in the OUA with the Laurentian Voyageurs. Both teams sit on 30 points for the season in the tightly packed conference playoff standings while just seven points separate second place Waterloo from eighth place Toronto.
As for the Ridgebacks, they drop to 4-1-13-1 on the season.
The Hawks now turn their attention to their crosstown rivals as they host the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday night, January 30, at the Waterloo Recreation Complex. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
