Riseley, Covach named OUA Athletes of the Week

FEMALE: Kristi Riseley (Pickering, Ont.) – 4th yr. – Toronto Varsity Blues – Hockey
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team went a perfect 2-0 this weekend with forward Kristi Riseley (Pickering, Ont.) factoring in on six of the nine goals scored in wins over the Windsor Lancers and defending McCaw Cup and CIS champion Western Mustangs.
Riseley, a fourth-year KPE Concurrent Education student-athlete, scored two goals and added two assists in a 6-5 OT win over the Lancers on Friday night. The Blues crawled out of a 2 goal deficit with four minutes to go, as Riseley registered assists on both the game-tying and game-winning goals.
On Saturday, the Pickering native added an insurance marker and an assist as the No. 5 nationally-ranked Varsity Blues upset the No. 1 Mustangs to improve to 4-0-2-0 on the season, good for first place in the conference.
In six games this season, Riseley has scored four goals and five assists for nine points. Riseley and the Varsity Blues return to action on Sunday, when they travel to Waterloo, Ont. to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks.
MALE: Tyler Covach (Kitchener, Ont.) – 2nd yr – York Lions – Volleyball
Tyler Covach (Kitchener, Ont.) and the York Lions men’s volleyball team couldn’t have asked for a better opening weekend.
Covach, a second-year physics and astronomy student-athlete, scored 41.5 points and 10 digs over the weekend as the Lions got a huge pair of wins against the Windsor Lancers and No. 7 nationally-ranked Western Mustangs.
On Friday night, the 6’5” 185 lbs outside hitter led all players with 22 kills and 24.5 points in a 3-1 win over the Lancers. Covach also added 1.5 blocks, one service ace and four digs.
Covach and the Lions were back to work on Saturday, upsetting the No. 7 nationally-ranked Mustangs in five sets. Covach filled up the scoresheet with 17 points on 12 kills, three blocks and two service aces, while adding six digs for good measure.
The Lions will hope to keep their hot start going when they head out on the road to Waterloo, Ont. on Friday, looking to avenge their semifinal loss to the Warriors last season.
