OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT women's hockey team had a number of scoring opportunities on Sunday but the puck did not bounce their way as the Laurier Golden Hawks earned a 3-1 win over the Ridgebacks.
OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT women's hockey team had a number of scoring opportunities on Sunday but the puck did not bounce their way as the Laurier Golden Hawks earned a 3-1 win over the Ridgebacks.
UOIT fired 26 shots on net but Laurier goaltender Amanda Smith made 25 saves for her second win in three games.
Tied 1-1 midway through the third period, the Ridgebacks looked to take the lead on a power play attempt. That is where the game turned 180 degrees. UOIT was called for back-to-back penalties, giving Laurier the man advantage.
Following Laurier's penalty expiring and a time out, fifth-year defender Blair Connelly blasted a shot from the point to score the go-ahead goal. One minute later, another fifth-year senior scored for the Golden Hawks as Jessie Hurrell walked in from the corner and beat starting goaltender Tori Campbell (Saskatoon, Sask.).
Mikaeli Cavell (Edmonton, Alta.) scored the Ridgebacks lone goal, her second of the weekend. Cavell was set up by Sarah Biesenthal (Chepstow, Ont.) and beat Smith while being dragged down by a defender.
With the PA announcer still listing the Ridgebacks' goal, Laurier's Robyn Degagne responded to tie the game at one goal apiece.
Campbell had a solid game in net making 22 saves. UOIT went 0-for-3 on the power play while Laurier was 1-for-5.
In 10 of 12 losses this season, the Ridgebacks have scored one or zero goals.
Laurier's offence was also struggling heading into today's game averaging only one goal per game in 2016.
UOIT (4-1-12-1) and Laurier (8-1-7-1) will have a rematch next Thursday night in Waterloo.
