The No. 6 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team scored three third-period goals to defeat the York Lions, 3-1, in exhibition action on Saturday, January 2 at Varsity Arena.
The Blues opened the scoring when Lauren Straatman buried an April Looije rebound on the powerplay six minutes into the game.
Toronto carried that lead into the second period but the Lions evened the score as Renata Bastos Gottgtroy skated across the slot and slid the puck into the bottom of the net midway through the frame.
The game was deadlocked at 1-1 after 40 minutes.
The Lions pressured early in the third period but it was the Blues who struck next. Team captain Kristi Riseley sent a nice pass to Taylor Day for a partial breakaway and she made a nice deke to put U of T up with 10 minutes remaining.
Fifth-year forward Jacqueline Scheffel then put the game away for good, scoring two goals 27 seconds apart to make it 4-1 with five minutes remaining in the third period.
The No. 6 Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow (Jan. 3) as they host the No. 2 McGill Martlets in exhibition action at Varsity Arena. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
