The TAKEOVER: RTA School of Media produce first all female live sports broadcast
Interdisciplinary group of female students from Ryerson’s Faculty of Communication and Design to crew live broadcast, January 29th
TORONTO - Students from Ryerson RTA School of Media produced the first all female live sports broadcast on Friday. From producers, to hosts to camera operators, these women brought fans the action from the Sportsnet RTA Production Centre at the Mattamy Athletic Centre, as Ryerson's Women's hockey team took on University of Windsor's Lancers.
The 23 woman crew was made up of student volunteers from the Ryerson Rams Network – a collective of FCAD students who will broadcast 60 games over the Ryerson Rams' athletic season. In an industry still very dominated by men, the TAKEOVER crew lead Leandra Vermeulen wanted to showcase the female talent being fostered and grown at Ryerson.
"I thought it would be a fun broadcast to show off the many skills the talented women in our network and school have," said Vermeulen. "Being the first female group to do this raises the stakes and we want this to be a broadcast that people will remember; we want to make history."
Dubbed "The TAKEOVER", the broadcast aired live on Rogers TV cable and SuperSports Pak and streamed through the OUA.tv Portal on Jan 29th, starting at 7:30 p.m.
"This broadcast is more than just recording a hockey game, it's a signal to the sport industry that change is coming and it is starting with this group of girls right here at Ryerson," says Charles Falzon, dean of the Faculty of Communication and Design. "I'm proud that the RTA School of Media will graduate more women who have an interest and the skills needed to be successful in sports because of extracurricular initiatives like this one."
