Golden Hawks shut out No. 3 ranked Gryphons
WATERLOO, Ont. (October 17, 2015) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's hockey team took a 2-0 victory over the No. 3 University of Guelph Gryphons on Saturday night to move 3-1-0-0 on the season.
Following a back and forth first period where neither Hawks nor Gryphons were able to find an offensive advantage over the other, rookie Danielle Wark (Baltimore, Ont.) found the back of the Gryphon's net 18 minutes into the second. For Wark, the goal was her first as a member of the purple and gold.
In the third, the Hawks didn't sit back as they outshot Guelph 9-7 but were unable to extend their lead. Finally, with Guelph's goalie on the bench, fifth year forward Jessie Hurrell of Palgrave, Ont., iced the game with her fourth goal of the year into the empty net.
Rookie netminder Lauren Webber of Burlington, Ont., was impressive in between the pipes for the purple and gold as she earned her second shutout in four games, stopping all 27 shots the nationally-ranked Gryphons threw her way.
Her counterpart, Valerie Lamenta of Montreal, suffered the loss as she allowed one goal on 23 shots.
Laurier, winners of three straight games, hit the road again to take on the Brock Badgers on October 24th. Faceoff is set for 7:15 p.m. at the Seymour Hannah Centre.

Lions upset No. 10 ranked Voyageurs with offensive explosion
Picking up their first win of the regular season, the York University women's hockey team came away with a 5-3 victory over the No. 10 nationally-ranked Laurentian Voyageurs in a thrilling match-up on Saturday night (Oct.17).
Canlan Ice Sports was electric as both teams battled back and forth throughout the game to edge out the win.
First to open the scoring in the first period was York's fifth-year forward LioSarai Whitty (Kingston, Ont.), who slammed the puck home for a 1-0 lead just six minutes in from Justine Treadwell's (Hunstville, Ont.) and Dana Somerville's (Hockley, Ont.) assists.
At 15:10, Laurentian was able to grab a tying goal to level the score to 1-1, but the Lions were quick to respond a few minutes later with a Rianna Langford (Collingwood, Ont.) goal that slid between the bars. Erin Locke (Toronto) claimed the assist for Lanford's finish and the Lions were up 2-1 to start the second period.
It was a high-scoring and nail-biting second period, but it seemed like the Lions were cleared from danger when second-year defender Jenna Gray (London, Ont.) hit the back of the net to increase the lead to 3-1 just 3:16 in. However, the Voyageurs didn't feel threatened from the two-goal deficit and were able to execute off of two chances in two minutes that leveled the score yet again to 3-3.
The Lions kept the Voyageurs on their toes as the puck skid quickly between the two teams. Midway through the second period, Somerville pounced off of a chance at 15:59 from a combination play between Treadwell and Whitty, and the Lions were back in the lead.
Then ensuring the 5-3 win and finishing the Voyageurs off was Locke, who buried the puck past Laurentian's goaltender with the help of Stephanie Dovaston (Unionville, Ont.) and Lauren Cavarzan (Hamilton, Ont.) at 16:39 for the final goal of the game.
The third period was scoreless for both teams as the Lions handed the Voyageurs their first loss of the season.
Next up for the Lions is an away fixture that will be played against the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday (Oct. 25) at 2:30pm.

Five different Warriors fill the net in win over Lancers
Five different Warriors found the net as the women's hockey team used a complete team effort to sink the Windsor Lancers by a score of 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at the icefields. Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia) turned aside 20 shots in the win while Ingrid Sandven was busier in the Lancer net allowing five goals on 39 shots.
The opening frame saw the two combatants exchange goals within one minute of each other as Shawna Lesperance put Windsor up 1-0 at 11:49 before Stephanie Digness (Aldergrove) fired home a point shot 52 seconds later for her first of the season. Kaitlyn McDonell (Kincardine) and Marissa Redmond (Ajax) were given the assists on Waterloo's opening goal.
The game would open up in the second period as Courtney Simpson (Komoka) put Waterloo up 2-1 with her first career CIS goal. Simpson put home a nice backhand after a nifty feed by Tegan Odland (Enchant). Michelle Tanel (Toronto) collected the second assist on the goal. Much like the Warriors answering Windsor's opening goal, the visitors repaid the favour, taking only two minutes to even the game at two's. Shailyn Waites put away the equalizer on a Windsor power play. The Warriors would however regain the lead only 23 seconds later with another first career goal, this time Alison Hanson (Toronto) tipping home a Tanel point shot as the Warriors went into the second intermission up 3-2.
The flood gates would open in the third as Siobhan Hewitt-Kenda (North Vancouver) potted her second of the season at 2:17 of the final frame while Paula LaGama tallied her third of the young season at 16:07 to give Waterloo the 5-2 victory.
With the win, Waterloo improves to 2-1-1 on the season and sit in a tie for third with seven points while Windsor remains winless at 0-3-0.
The Warriors will enjoy the rest of the weekend off before getting back to action weekend at the CIF against Guelph (Saturday) and York (Sunday).

Gaels continue shutout streak against Rams
TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams women's hockey team threw everything they had at the Queen's Gaels Saturday afternoon. Coming off a tough 4-3 shootout loss to the UOIT Ridgebacks the night before, the Rams fired a total of 30 shots at the Gaels' net. Caitlyn Lahonen, Queen's fifth year goaltender, stopped them all though to lead her side to a 2-0 victory at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. The Gaels have now shutout Ryerson in three straight games dating back to last season.
"We're lucky a part of our team is a player like Caitlyn," said Queen's head coach Matt Holmberg following the game. "Some games like this, when we give up a few point blank shots, you really need your goalie and she was there for us."
The Gaels, coming off of a shootout loss of their own to the Toronto Varsity Blues last night, came out strong in the first period. They were rewarded for their efforts with 31 seconds remaining in the frame. Taryn Pilon picked up a loose puck behind Ryerson's net and put a perfect pass onto the stick of Courtenay Jacklin in the slot. She put her shot between the legs of the Rams' goaltender Ally Sarna to give Queen's a 1-0 advantage.
Pilon, who finished fourth in OUA scoring last season, hit the scoresheet again in the third period. She banged home a rebound off a Amber Sealey point shot on the powerplay to extend the Gaels' lead to 2-0.
The Rams pushed hard to get back in the game after that goal. While on a 5-on-3 powerplay with eight minutes left in the third, Ryerson coach Lisa Haley elected to pull Sarna to make it a 6-on-3 advantage. The Rams had a number of opportunities but Lahonen made some key saves and Queen's defenders blocked a number of shots to keep Ryerson scoreless.
Still down 2-0, Haley pulled Sarna again with a couple of minutes remaining in the game. The Rams had a flurry of golden opportunities to break the shutout. However, Lahonen turned aside every puck that came her way, highlighted by a sprawling glove save on Blair Malthaner (Toronto) in the dying seconds.
Queen's finished 1-for-3 on the powerplay while Ryerson was unsuccessful on their three chances. Sarna made 24 saves for the Rams in the losing effort.
"I feel great about the performance," said Haley when asked about the game. "Obviously, I'm disappointed that we didn't get rewarded on the scoreboard. We've done a lot of great things here over the last 60 minutes. Unfortunately we come away with no points despite our effort."
The loss drops Ryerson's record to 0-3-0-1 and 11th in the OUA. Meanwhile, the victory bumps the Gaels (3-0-0-1) into first place.
The tough schedule to begin this season continues for Ryerson. The Rams travel to Western on Saturday, October 24th to take on the 2-1-0-0 Mustangs. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Thompson Arena.

No. 6 ranked Blues extend winning streak to four
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team notched their fourth-straight win in defeating the UOIT Ridgebacks 3-1 Saturday night (Oct. 17) at Varsity Arena.
The Blues jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first period thanks to some great work on special teams. Third-year defenceman Autumn Garnham opened the scoring for U of T with a booming shot from the point just as a UOIT player was exiting the penalty box.
Five minutes later, veteran forward Sonja Weidenfelder extended her goal-scoring streak to three straight games with a power play marker set up by Rebecca Bourgeois and Christine Chao.
The final Varsity Blues goal came late in the second period when a beautiful cross-crease feed from veteran Jacqueline Sheffel. Scheffel found the stick of second-year forward Kassandra Roache, who deposited the puck in the net.
UOIT would get one back in the third courtesy Mikaeli Cavell but Varsity Blues goaltender Valencia Yordanov shut the door the rest of the way. Yordanov finished the night with 19 saves, pushing her save percentage to .956, ranking her fourth in the OUA.
The Varsity Blues will now begin a three-game road trip starting in Windsor, Ont. Saturday, October 24 against the Lancers. Puck drop is set for 4 p.m.
