No. 5 Varsity Blues come from behind to defeat Lancers
The Windsor Lancer women's hockey team let a two goal lead slip away, falling 6-5 in overtime to the No. 5 Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday afternoon at South Windsor Arena.
With the loss, the Lancer are still looking for their first win of the season while the Blues improve to 5-0-0 and remain at the top of the OUA standings.
Toronto capitalized on 3-of-4 power play opportunities, while the Lancers failed to score on their fives power play chances.
Up 5-3 with less than four minutes remaining, the Lancers were unable to hold of the Varsity Blues as they mounted a valiant comeback. With Taylor Shephard in the box and Blues goaltender Katie Teekasingh on the bench, third-year defenceman Rebecca Bourgeois scored to bring the game within one with 3:30 to go in the third period. Then, less than two minutes later, Taylor Day evened the score with her second goal of the night, with just 1:34 left to force OT.
Just 25 seconds into the overtime, the visiting Blues stole the win from the Lancers as Autumn Granham snapped the puck past Lancer goaltender Marissa Kozovski.
Kozovski made 31 saves in net for the Blue & Gold, while Teekasingh made 34 to earn the victory.
Lancer goal scorers included Shawna Lesperance, Larissa Borowiec, Erinn Noseworthy, Krystin Lawrence and Taylor Conte.
Windsor will travel up north next weekend for a pair of games against the Nipissing Lakers and Laurentian Voyageurs.

Warriors unable to solve Lamenta in 2-0 loss to Gryphons
The Waterloo women's hockey team could not solve Guelph Gryphons netminder Valerie Lamenta as they fell to the visitors 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at the CIF Arena. Waterloo peppered Lamenta all day long but just could not find twine as the black and gold fell to 2-2-1 on the season. The No. 6 ranked Gryphons improved to 3-2-0 on the season.
Following a scoreless opening frame, the Gryphons found the game's opening goal on a nice individual effort by Jessica Pinkerton at 8:39 of the second. Pinkerton picked up a sloppy clearing pass by the Warriors and slid the puck past Bouwhuis to give her squad a 1-0 lead.
Guelph put away the insurance marker at 13:02 of the final period as Leigh Shilton put away a power play goal. Brittany St. James was given the lone assist on the goal.
Waterloo's best scoring chance came off the stick of Maryn Caragata (Etobicoke) after a nice pass by Amy Barnard (Cambridge) on a 2-on-1. Caragata shot it just off the side of the net to miss the open net. Alyssa Gee (Ajax) and Siobhan Hewitt-Kenda (North Vancouver) also had chances to bang home rebounds in the second period but couldn't beat Lamenta who stopped all 30 shots faced for the win. At the other end Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia) was as strong allowing just two goals on 27 shots.
The Warriors will be back at it tomorrow afternoon as they take on the York Lions at 2:30pm at the CIF. You can catch the action live on OUA.tv.

Another weekend split for the Ridgebacks
OSHAWA, Ont. – For the third straight week to open up the regular season, the UOIT women's hockey team split their pair of games.
In their weekend homestand against Northern Ontario opponents, the Ridgebacks began the weekend with a 3-1 loss to Nipissing followed by a 3-1 victory over Laurentian.
After scoring the opening goal of the game against Nipissing on Friday night, the Ridgebacks let their foot off the pedal as the Lakers stormed back with three unanswered goals to pick up the win.
Teresa Horner (Hamilton, Ont.) scored the Ridgebacks lone goal in the first period, marking the second of her career.
For the second straight year, Jacqueline Rochefort shined in goal for the Lakers as she made 18 saves in the win. Last year, she stopped 19 UOIT shots in a 4-1 victory at the Campus Ice Centre. Tori Campbell (Saskatoon, Sask.) got the start in net for UOIT and stopped 23 Nipissing shots on goal.
Against the Voyageurs on Saturday, it was another defenseman chipping in offensively for UOIT as Jenna Carter (Whitby, Ont.) scored the game-winning goal. As it was for Horner, her goal was the second of her career.
Carter's game winner came midway through the first period, just over a minute after Nicole Gorda's (Edmondton, Alta) opening goal. Sarah Biesenthal (Chepstow, Ont.) added an insurance marker in the third period, marking the first goal of her OUA career.
Chelsea Ball (Maple, Ont.) had two assists over the weekend, as she leads the team with five points on the year.
Campbell got her second straight start and made 22 saves for her third win of the year.
Although the Ridgebacks are sitting at .500, they have to wonder what their record would be if they were getting any production out of their power play unit. In six conference games, the Ridgebacks have gone 0-for-27 with the man advantage including 0-for-6 this weekend.
UOIT (3-3-0) will be on the road next weekend with games in Guelph and Waterloo.

Third period goal lifts Mustangs over Rams
LONDON, Ont. – Kendra Broad scored the winning goal midway through the third period as the Western Mustangs women's hockey team skated to a 3-1 victory over the Ryerson Rams on Saturday afternoon at Thompson Arena.
The victory gives Western a 3-1 record early in the 2015-16 season, while Ryerson moves to 0-4 on the year.
Kendra Broad's goal, her first of the year, broke a 1-1 tie just past the midway point of the final frame and came off of assists from Stacey Scott and Brittany Clapham.
Clapham led all Western scorers on the night as she was involved on each of Western's three goals, netting one of her own to go along with assists on the Mustangs first two goals of the game.
Kelly Campbell got the win in the Mustangs net, stopping 32 of the 33 shots she faced. Taking the loss for Ryerson was Ally Sarna who turned aside 20 of the 22 pucks sent her way.
The Mustangs jumped out to a quick lead, striking with only a minute gone in the first frame. Clapham made a nice touch pass to find Scott in front and the fifth-year forward made no mistake, sliding the puck past the outstretched goalie to open the scoring.
However, the Rams were not deterred. They answered less than a minute later as Blair Malthaner found herself in alone on a breakaway and went upstairs to beat Campbell and tie the game.
The Rams picked up the pace and skated well, outshooting the Mustangs 11-9 in the first period. They're quick neutral zone counterattack led to several good scoring opportunities, however, Campbell stood tall and the score remained tied at one after one.
The second period was a battle for the neutral zone. The two teams went up and down the ice, but neither could generate a goal. With the benefit of a few power plays, the Rams outshot the Mustangs once again but couldn't crack the Mustang penalty kill.
In the third, the Mustangs dominated possession, but couldn't generate many shots on net. The Rams almost made the Mustangs pay as a blueline turnover led to a two on none rush, but it was fired wide.
And as so often happens, the Mustangs came back down the ice and capitalized. The Mustangs gained control in the offensive zone, and Scott fired a close range shot that was kicked out by Sarna. The puck found the tape of Broad who neatly tucked it in to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead.
Fittingly, the Mustangs killed off one last penalty and then sealed the victory with an empty netter from Clapham to secure a 3-1 win for the home side.
The story of the game was perhaps the Mustangs penalty kill. They killed off three first period opportunities and went a perfect seven for seven overall including the game clinching kill in the third period.
Western won't have time to celebrate their victory as they're back on the ice at Thompson Arena once again on Sunday afternoon against the Toronto Varsity Blues. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. and all the action can be watched live on OUA.tv

The Lakers had a second player ejected from the game for checking from behind. With a 5 on 3 a nice tic-tac-toe play ended with a tap home goal by Katrina Manoukarakis (Scarborough, Ont.). With just three minutes remaining in the period, the Gaels lost control in the neutral zone with the Lakers capitalizing with a goal by Brooklyn Irwin. Just moments later it was the Lakers once again, scoring with Sam Strasburger shoving home a rebound past Caitlyn Lahonen (Sharon, Ont.). The Lakers played a timid and safe third, keeping the game at a 2-1 score. With 49 seconds left the Gaels drew a tripping call and pulled Lahonen to give them a 6 on 4 advantage. 20 seconds later it was once again Manoukarakis from Mary Coughlin (Amhertsburg, Ont.) tying the game up with less that 30 seconds to go.
