SCOREBOARD
The York University Lions women's hockey team fell to the No. 4 nationally-ranked Western Mustangs on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 17) by a score of 2-0 at Canlan Ice Sports.
The Lions could not find any room in the Western zone as the Mustangs defence shut down any Lions attack. The Mustang defensive wall was led by the starting goaltender Kelly Campbell as she stopped all 22 shots in the win.
Lions starting goalie Megan Lee (Orillia, Ont.) was once again in top form as she stood on her head for the majority of the game. Lee was faced with countless scoring chances where she came up clutch, which kept the game close. She finished with 17 saves in the loss.
The scoring didn't begin until the mid-way point of the second period as Katelyn Gosling beat Lee high blocker side with a shot from the point. The Mustangs were not finished there, as they came galloping back and potted another goal to add to their lead. Marlowe Pecora poked in a loose puck in the crease that provided the insurance marker the team wanted.
After the loss the Lions now fall to 2-3-7-2 and are 10th in the OUA standings, eight points out of the last playoff spot. The Mustangs improve to an impressive 10-1-4-0 and continue to climb in the OUA standings, now sitting second.
The Lions are back on the ice on Friday night (Jan. 22) when they travel to Ryerson to take on the 2-0-11-1 Rams downtown Toronto. Puck drop is set for 7:30pm.

Bouwhuis, Marriott come up big in 4-1 win over Lakers
Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia) stopped 32 shots and Rachel Marriott (Waterloo) tallied two goals and added an assist as the Warriors skated past the Nipissing Lakers by a score of 4-1. The win was Waterloo's second in as many nights and capped off a weekend where the Warrior offence exploded for 13 goals and picked up six crucial points in the OUA standings.
The Warriors are now 10-5-1 on the season and moved into sole possession of fourth in the OUA, just one point behind the Lakers who have 30 points.
After a scoreless 37 minutes of hockey, Rachel Marriott (Waterloo) opened the scoring late in the second frame walking in off the half boards and firing it top corner past the glove of Laker keeper Jacqueline Rochefort. Alyssa Gee (Ajax) and Siobhan Hewitt-Kenda (North Vancouver) teamed up for the helpers on the goal.
Marriott made it a 2-0 lead for the home side 2:47 into the third period, banging home her own rebound. Gee and Hewitt-Kenda were once again in on the goal. Just seven minutes later, that same line connected once again as Gee netter a one-timer following a slick feed by Hewitt-Kenda. Overall, the trio combined for nine points in the game.
Stacey Henshaw of the Lakers spoiled the shutout making it 3-1 in the middle of the final frame, but captain Kaitlyn McDonell (Kincardine) would ice the game with a fortunate bounce off the boards on a clearing attempt that would end up in the visitor's empty net to secure the 4-1 win.
The Warriors will turn their attention to two more important games next weekend as they face the Queen's Gaels on Friday and UOIT Ridgebacks on Saturday.
