
Elgersma, Brashear, Lane named OUA football players of the week
Burlington, Ont. – Taylor Elgersma, Jaxxon Brashear, and Benjamin Lane have been named the Canadian Football Perspective's OUA Players of the Week for Week 7.
Offensive Player of the Week – Taylor Elgersma, Wilfrid Laurier
The reigning OUA MVP put on a show against the Queen's Gaels, ending the day with 417 passing yards and five touchdowns in the Laurier Golden Hawks 51-21 win on Saturday.
The veteran quarterback threw his second 400-plus yard game of the season, and fourth of his career. His five passing touchdowns also marked a season high. The London, Ont. native went 23-for-30 in the air, with his longest pass finding Layomi Ojutalayo for 81 yards. He also rushed five times for 51 yards.
With this performance, Elgersma sits first in the OUA in passing yards (1,970), passing yards per game (328.3), and completion percentage (73.9%) while ranking second in touchdowns with 13.
Defensive Player of the Week – Jaxxon Brashear, Ottawa
The Gee-Gees linebacker Brashear logged a massive performance in Ottawa's 35-32 victory over the Carleton Ravens in the 2024 Panda Game. He had six solo tackles and one assisted, good for 6.5 overall.
The Quebec City, Que. native made a turning point play when he blocked a Carleton punt that was scooped and returned for a touchdown to give Ottawa the lead in the third quarter, one they wouldn't relinquish en route to winning their sixth consecutive Panda Game.
Special Teams Player of the Week - Benjamin Lane, Guelph
Lane rose to the occasion in the Guelph Gryphons 45-40 win over the Windsor Lancers, making all nine of his kicks - five field goals and four extra points. The second-year kicker's efforts accounted for 19 points in the win. His longest kick of the day came early in the fourth quarter, a 48-yard field goal he made after doinking it off the right upright and through.
Lane's most important kick of the game came with his team leading 42-34 late in the fourth frame as he made a chip shot from nine yards out to give Guelph the much needed nine-point lead that would ultimately put the game out of reach.
The Puslinch, Ont. product in his six games has made 11 of his 14 field goal attempts and is a perfect 19-for-19 on extra points.
