Elgersma, Vanek, Reid named OUA football players of the week
Burlington, Ont. – Taylor Elgersma, Keegan Vanek, and Keyshawn Reid have been named the Canadian Football Perspective’s OUA Players of the Week for Week 4.
Offensive Player of the Week – Taylor Elgersma, Wilfrid Laurier
In the much-anticipated 2023 Yates Cup rematch, Elgersma led the Golden Hawks to a 43-28 win over the Western Mustangs on Saturday afternoon.
Elgersma got Laurier on the scoreboard first calling his own number for his first rushing touchdown of the game. The fourth-year kinesiology major would follow that drive up with a 72-yard touchdown pass to Ethan Jordan to give Laurier the early 14-0 lead. Elgersma and Jordan would connect again on a perfect 23-yard pass into the end zone. The reigning OUA MVP secured his second rushing touchdown in the contest with 10 minutes left on the clock to put Laurier up 38-16 and out of reach of the Mustangs.
Elgersma ended the game with an 82.7% completion rate, two passing and two rushing touchdowns, and his second-highest career single-game passing yard total at 385 yards. He used eight different receivers and had no interceptions in the matchup.
Defensive Player of the Week – Keegan Vanek, Queen’s
In a historic weekend for Queen's football, Vanek stood out for the Gaels on defence and special teams in their 48-20 win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
The veteran defensive back blocked a Gee-Gees punt putting the ball in Jeremy Hiscox’s hands, who ran it in for the touchdown late in the first frame. Vanek had two interceptions in the Gaels 500th win, returning his second pick going for 64 yards and the touchdown.
The London, Ont. product added 1.5 tackles to his stat line on Saturday afternoon.
Special Teams Player of the Week - Keyshawn Reid, Carleton
Reid helped the Carleton Ravens secure their first win of the season in commanding fashion, 42-12 over the Toronto Varsity Blues.
Late in the fourth quarter, the first-year running back hauled in Toronto’s kickoff just steps in front of the Ravens end zone and put his best foot forward from there. Reid barrelled forward with a full head of steam, using some fancy footwork and maneuvering to navigate the oncoming sea of Blues. The Ottawa, Ont. native eluded one final tackle at the 30-yard line and finished off the impressive 107-yard return with a touchdown to solidify the Carleton win.
The special teams surge marked the biggest play in Reid’s young OUA career thus far.
