Barnes, Moretuzzo, Lidster named OUA football players of the week
Burlington, Ont. – Elijah Barnes, Anthony Moretuzzo, and Brady Lidster have been named the Canadian Football Perspective’s OUA Players of the Week for Week 6.
Offensive Player of the Week – Elijah Barnes, Carleton
Elijah Barnes led the Carleton Ravens to an exciting 24-10 win over the York Lions on Saturday afternoon.
The second-year quarterback put his team in position to make things happen, and they did. After the Carleton defence forced York to go two-and-out to start the second half, Barnes found Frederik Hachey at midfield, who took off for the end zone.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Lions cut the lead to seven. Barnes and the Ravens answered back with a two minute, four play drive where he connected with Tristan Ready for 42 yards and then found Kaseem Ferdinand with a 22-yard pass for the touchdown.
The Ancaster, Ont. native was 21-for-32 for 357 yards with two touchdowns in the win. Barnes sits third in the OUA standings averaging 258.0 yards per game.
Defensive Player of the Week – Anthony Moretuzzo, Guelph
Anthony Moretuzzo was everywhere on defence in the Guelph Gryphons 42-25 win over the Waterloo Warriors. The second-year defensive back started at safety and made an immediate impact in that position in front of a packed homecoming crowd.
The most monumental play the Stoney Creek, Ont. native would make came early in the fourth quarter when he caught a key interception leading to a touchdown for the Gryphons to extend their lead to 17.
Moretuzzo finished the day with two solo tackles and eight assisted tackles.
Special Teams Player of the Week - Brady Lidster, Windsor
The No. 5 Windsor Lancers defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues 52-5 on a rainy Saturday night in Windsor. Brady Lidster’s leg was key in the Lancers’ victory.
The third-year kicker was a perfect 4-for-4 on kicks, putting all four through the uprights. He made a 37-yard field goal late in the first quarter to extend Windsor’s lead to 12-3. He matched his long of 37 yards again late in the third frame. The St. Thomas, Ont. native was busy in the final quarter of action as well, converting two 30-yard field goals.
This is the second OUA special teams player of the week nod for Lidster.
