
Elgersma, Gregorcic, Garrity named OUA football players of the week
Burlington, Ont. – Taylor Elgersma, Ethan Gregorcic, and Brian Garrity have been named the Canadian Football Perspective’s OUA Players of the Week for Week 11.
Offensive Player of the Week – Taylor Elgersma, Laurier Golden Hawks
After a quiet first quarter for the Laurier quarterback, Elgersma turned up the heat in the second to help beat the Queen’s Gaels 29-21 in the OUA semifinal.
The London, Ont. native took his team down the field three times in the last five minutes of the second quarter to score on each drive and give the Golden Hawks their first lead of the game.
He first found his favourite target Ethan Jordan for a 16-yard pass that Jordan weaved through defenders into the end zone. His second touchdown was a long bomb to Ryan Hughes while his final on the day went to Layomi Ojutalayo who found open field on the far side to secure the points.
Elgersma had 24 completions for 348 yards and three touchdowns to solidify Laurier’s berth in the Yates Cup.
Defensive Player of the Week – Ethan Gregorcic, Laurier Golden Hawks
The reigning OUA rookie of the year was a key factor in holding off the Queen’s Gaels offence in Laurier’s 29-21 OUA semifinal win.
Gregorcic had four solo tackles and assisted on two for a total of five on the day. He added three pass breakups to his stat line. The Courtice, Ont. product perhaps made his presence most felt when he read the Gaels pass perfectly, intercepting the ball and taking it 41 yards. His pick led to the Golden Hawks final touchdown of the day on the ensuing drive.
The linebacker will look to build on his defensive power in the Yates Cup this weekend.
Special Teams Player of the Week - Brian Garrity, Western Mustangs
Garrity put up another impressive outing in the Western Mustangs 30-19 OUA semifinal win over the Guelph Gryphons.
The kicker was a perfect three-for-three on field goals. He traded field goals on multiple occasions with Guelph’s Benjamin Lane, both to add to Western’s advantage.
The local, London, Ont. product’s longest kick of the day was 32-yards, also sending kicks of 16 and 27 yards through the goal posts. He was also a perfect three-for-three on extra points.
Garrity, the reigning Dalt White Award winner form the 115th Yates Cup will look to continue his reliable game into the Yates Cup this weekend against Laurier.
