It was a special night at the Minto Sports Complex on Friday night, as the Ottawa Gee-Gees men's hockey team downed the Queen's Gaels 3-2 in double overtime on a Mathieu Newcomb (Grande-Digue, N.B.) overtime winner.
With the win in Game 2 of their OUA East quarter-final matchup, the Gee-Gees levelled the series at one and forced a third and deciding game in Kingston tomorrow night.
"It's important for our guys to get rewarded for the effort they put out the last two games," said uOttawa head coach Patrick Grandmaitre, whose team outshot Queen's 55-40 on the evening. "Our pace was good and our fitness was a bit better tonight than theirs — now we have to be ready to go again in 24 hours."
Ryan Bloom opened the scoring for Queen's at the 9:32 mark of the first period, when he batted home a loose puck at the side of the net to put the visitors in front.
Newcomb drew the Gee-Gees level just 56 seconds into the middle frame, when he wired a wrist shot from a tight angle past Gaels starter Kevin Bailie.
Brendan Jacome (Georgetown, Ont.) then gave uOttawa its first lead of the playoffs at 2:30 of the third period, when he redirected a Jacob Hanlon (Mississauga, Ont.) pass through Bailie's five hole and in.
Eric Ming tied the game for Queen's inside the final three minutes of regulation on a wrist shot that evaded Gee-Gees goaltender Graham Hunt (Concord, Mass.).
uOttawa controlled most of the 28 overtime minutes played before Newcomb fired home from the slot to blow the roof off the Minto Complex.
The Gee-Gees and Gaels will decide their three-game series tomorrow night at the Kingston Memorial Centre (7:30 p.m., OUA TV).
