BURLINGTON, Ont. – Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and U SPORTS announced Friday the 22-man roster that will represent Canada at the upcoming FISU Winter Universiade in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
The roster includes a total of 13 forwards, 7 defencemen and two goaltenders. A complete roster can be found below.
"Our staff feels the training camp from December 27-30 could not have gone any better," said Brett Gibson, Head Coach of Team Canada. "We got to evaluate the top 40 players in our league very closely and they did not disappoint."
"We feel as though we have selected the top 22 players who fit the needs we were looking for in selecting a team to represent Canada at the FISU games; Speed, discipline and character," continued Gibson. "I believe this is a very strong group of players who I am excited to work with in pursuit of a gold medal in early February."
Six student-athletes from the defending Queen's Cup champions and No. 10 nationally ranked UQTR Patriotes have been selected to represent their country, including 2016 BLG nominee Guillaume Asselin (Quebec City, Que.).
Joining Asselin are forwards Tommy Giroux (Quebec City, Que.) and Pierre-Olivier Morin (Trois-Rivières, Que.), defencemen Martin Lefebvre (Terrebonne, Que.) and Charles-David Beaudoin (Drummondville, Que.) as well as goaltender Sebastian Auger (St-Augustin-de-Desmaures, Que.).
OUA East Division foes the Carleton Ravens and No. 8 ranked Queen's Gaels are also strongly represented on the team as four players from each program have been selected following training camp.
All four Ravens forwards invited to training camp have been named to the team, including: Brett Welychka (London, Ont.), Ryan Van Stralen (Prescott, Ont.), Michael McNamee (Perth, Ont.) and Corey Durocher (Ottawa, Ont.).
In addition, four Queen's student-athletes have rewarded following outstanding fall terms as forwards Slater Doggett (Oakville, Ont.) and Eric Ming (Williamstown, Ont.), defenceman Spencer Abraham (Campbellville, Ont.) and goaltender Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) will trade in their tricolour for the red and white of Team Canada.
Less than a month after suiting up for the U SPORTS All-Stars in an exhibition series against the Canada's National Junior Team prospects, No. 6 ranked McGill Redmen forward Mathieu Pompei (Laval, Que.) and defenceman Nathan Chiarlitti (Maple, Ont.) have been selected to the team. Also joining the pair in Almaty will be a familiar face as Redmen defenceman Etienne Boutet (Quebec City, Que.) will also be making the trip.
Scott Simmonds (Uxbridge, Ont.) of the Guelph Gryphons and Brent Pedersen (Arthur, Ont.) of the Laurentian Voyageurs, along with Concordia Stingers captain Olivier Hinse (Sherbrooke, Que.) will round out the Canadian forwards.
On the back end, No. 3 Ryerson Rams playmaker Alex Basso (Toronto, Ont.) and Waterloo Warriors defensive defenceman Mike Moffat (Waterloo, Ont.) will shore up the defence for Team Canada.
Head coach Brett Gibson (Queen's) along with assistant coaches Craig Duncanson (Laurentian), Marty Johnston (Carleton) and Brian Bourque (Waterloo) will look to lead Canada to a sixth consecutive podium finish since the 2007 Winter Universiade in Turin, Italy. Also joining the staff is athletic therapist James Sawchuk (Queen's) and equipment manager Trevor Black (Waterloo).
Team Canada will open their tournament on Monday, January 30 against the rival United States of America at 8:30 AM ET (7:30 PM ALMT).
