Doggett's late goal propels 1st place Gaels past No. 7 UQTR
KINGSTON, Ont. (December 3, 2016) - The Queen's Gaels (13-4-1) closed out the 2016 portion of the schedule with an upset win over the No.7 nationally ranked UQTR Patriotes (11-5-1) and stay in first place in the OUA East.
GAME FLOW
The opening period was a battle of the two goaltenders as the Gaels Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) and Patriotes Sebastien Auger turned aside all scoring chances in the period. Bailie finished the frame with 14 saves while Augers stopped all 11 shots that he faced in the frame.
UQTR had the only powerplay in the opening period but the Gaels OUA leading penalty kill unit held the Patriotes attack at bay.
In the second period, the Gaels were the first to strike. After Warren Steele (Williamsburg, Ont.) cleared the puck out of the Gaels zone, Darcy Greenaway (Wilton, Ont.) picked up the puck and after speeding past one defender broke in on a two-on-one rush. Greenaway drew the final Patriotes defencemen close enough and slid the puck over to Ted Hunt (Toronto) who made no mistake beating Auger and giving Queen's a 1-0 lead.
The Gaels defence held up strong and Bailie stopped all seven shots he faced in the second.
UQTR was finally able to beat Bailie in the third, Tommy Giroux scored on a short angle shot that beat the Gaels netminder and the score was tied at 1-1 at the 8:54 mark of the third period.
With time ticking down on the clock Slater Doggett (Oakville, Ont.) stayed hot for Queen's. The trailing forward on the play, he picked up a late pass and fired a quick shot to the blocker side of Auger beating the Patriotes goaltender to put the Gaels ahead 2-1.
Queen's held on from there and claimed the 2-1 victory. Bailie finished with 35 saves for Queen's picking up the win while Auger stopped 33 of the shots he faced.

Lancers sweep weekend series with Lakers
The Lancer men's hockey team came home with a 2-1 victory over the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday afternoon at South Windsor Arena in their second game of the weekend, sweeping the weekend series.
The win moves the Lancers to third place in the OUA west division with a 10-6-2 record, while the Lakers fall to 5-11-1 and sit in 9th in the east division.
The Lancers picked up where they left off Friday afternoon, getting on the board early in the game scoring two power play goals. First Konnor Haas fired one in from the high slot behind Nipissing goaltender Talor Joseph at 15:08, and about a minute and a half later Todd Ratchford fired a shot in from the point, accepting a perfect pass that was set up by Steve Anthony and Dylan Denomme.
Following a scoreless second period, the third period was almost as uneventful with the frame's lone game coming at 7:07 from Danny Desrochers.
Blake Richard was in net for the Lancers making 39 saves for the win, while Talor Joseph took the loss for the visiting Lakers with 34 saves.
The Lancers now break for the holidays and will be back in action in Guelph on Tuesday January 3rd to face off against the Gryphons. The puck will drop at 7:30pm and can be seen live on oua.tv.

Lions exploded for six goals in win over Warriors
The York University Lions men's hockey team equalled a season high with six goals on Saturday night in a 6-2 triumph over the Waterloo Warriors at Canlan Ice Sports in their final home game of the 2016 season.
The Lions enter the December break with an 11-5-2 record and in second place in the OUA West standings, while the Warriors fell to 5-8-3 and are currently ninth in the division.
It didn't take long for the Lions to get on the board in the contest as rookie Daniel Nikandrov (Richmond Hill, Ont.) found the back of the net just 58 seconds into the game for an early 1-0 lead.
Seven minutes later the Lions extended their lead on a beautiful breakaway goal by Reid Jackman (Etobicoke, Ont.) to make it 2-0.
At 13:34 Trevor Petersen (Thornhill, Ont.) padded the Lions lead, but the Warriors cut the deficit to two only 30 seconds later on Riley Sonnenberg's marker and the first period ended with the Lions leading 3-1.
The Lions again scored early in the second on Petersen's second of the night, which came on a power play at 4:36 to increase the lead to 4-1. As they did in the first, the Warriors bounced back quickly and Sam Caldwell scored at 7:11 for a 4-2 York lead.
The pace slowed down in the second period but the overall intensity increased as the game turned chippy. At one point mid way through the frame there were eight penalties called in a 90 second span, and the Lions capitalized as team leading scorer Derek Sheppard (Ajax, Ont.) scored for a 5-2 advantage.
In the third Bryce Milson (Miramichi, N.B.) redirected a shot by Nick Zottl (Sarnia, Ont.) into the back of the net to round out the scoring.
Rookie goaltender Alex Fotinos (Toronto) made 28 saves to earn the win between the pipes, while his Waterloo counterpart, Mike Morrison, stopped 17.
The Lions will next return to the ice at the end of December for a pair of exhibition games against the defending U Sports champion UNB Varsity Reds in Fredericton. Their next OUA action is set for Friday, Jan. 6 when the Lions head to London, Ont., for a game against the Western Mustangs.

OTTAWA - The Ryerson Rams men's hockey team capped off arguably their best semester of hockey in program history with a shootout win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday night.
BOXSCORE
Captain Michael Fine and Chris Marchese both scored in the shootout to secure the victory which pushes Ryerson's record to 13-2-1 through 16 games. The 13 wins is tied for the 3rd most in a season, with 12 games remaining.
It was the second time in two nights that the Rams were forced to play extra time after defeating McGill 1-0 in overtime on Friday night.
Jamie Lewis opened the scoring for the Rams in the first period when he potted a rebound off a Luke Mercer point shot. Ryerson doubled their lead shortly after when Matt Mistele also buried a rebound in the slot.
That was all the scoring the Rams could muster in regulation though, and Ottawa scored in the first and third periods to send the game into extra time.
Both the 4-on-4 and 3-on-3 overtime periods solved nothing, sending the Rams to their first shootout since February 2, 2013 which they also won.
Matt Mistele was first up for the Rams but he was stopped. Taylor Dupuis responded for Ryerson, stopping the first Ottawa shooter. Captain Michael Fine then converted his attempt before the second Ottawa shooter missed the net wide left. With the chance to win the game, Chris Marchese fired a shot five-hole to give the Rams the victory.
Dupuis finished with 46 saves to earn his fifth win of the season.
The Rams remain atop the OUA West division standings heading into the exam and holiday break. Ryerson returns to the ice on January 6 when they head to Quebec to take on the UQTR Patriotes.

MONTREAL -- Mathieu Pompei of Laval, Que., tallied three points and scored twice, including the game-winner, as sixth-ranked McGill toppled Toronto 6-1 to wrap up the first semester of OUA men's hockey, Saturday, at McConnell Arena.
It marked the 600th career game behind the bench for McGill head coach Kelly Nobes, who improved to 330-256-14 overall at the collegiate level, including coaching stints at RMC (40-110-10), Laurier (100-58-1) and McGill (190-88-3). Junior forward Simon Tardif-Richard retrieved the puck from the referees at game's end and it was presented as a souvenir to Nobes in the team's dressing room.
This was also the 224th confrontation between the Redmen and the Varsity Blues in a rivalry that dates back to Feb. 20, 1899. McGill owns an 88-121-15 lifetime record against Toronto, including a 30-10-4 mark in the last 44 meetings.
The Redmen outshot their guests by a massive 44-14 margin, including a lopsided 16-1 in the third period. Ravaged by injuries, the Varsity Blues dressed two less players than usual and only had eight forwards available for the contest.
Alexandre Tremblay of Repentigny, Que., opened the scoring for McGill 10:47 into the game before Pompei buried his first of the evening, a power-play marker at 12:54. Rock Regimbald of Gatineau, Que., added another at 14:37 to boost the lead to 3-0 heading into the intermission.
Pompei, a 5-foot-7, 166-pound centre, netted another just 40 seconds into the middle frame. The 25-year-old social work senior now leads the OUA scoring race with a 9-20-29 record in just 17 games, two points ahead of UQTR's Pierre-Olivier Morin (10-17-27).
Team captain Patrick Delisle-Houde of Quebec City scored with the man-advantage at 14:23 of the third to put McGill ahead 5-1. It was his team-leading 11th in 16 league games, one shy of second place among OUA goal leaders. The fifth-year kinesiology senior now has a 62-96-158 record in 185 career games for the Redmen. He needs to dress only three more times to move into sole possession of second place on the team's all-time leaders list for games played. He trails former Redmen captains Evan Vossen (216) and Paul Barber (187) in that category.
Rearguard Francis Lambert-Lemay of St. Ours, Que., a small town located on the Richelieu River, about 18 miles south of Sorel-Tracy, closed the scoring with a power-play goal of his own at 17:16. It was the first career goal in 101 games overall at the collegiate level for the six-foot, 208-pound economics junior and his teammates on the bench seemed even more happier than he on the historic marker.
"The coaches gave me an opportunity to go out there on the PP," said the 23-year-old economics junior, a stay-at-home defenceman and a product of the QMJHL, where he skated with Quebec and Drummondville. "I got a great pass from Frederic Gamelin, took a one-timer on net and it just went in. The boys went crazy and it was a good feeling."
Lambert-Lemay, who was presented with the puck as a souvenir, also set up Pompei on McGill's fourth goal, one which was initially credited to the defenceman but was changed after a video replay review.
"It was a good way to end the semester and I'm looking forward to the second half," he added. "But the exam period is coming up quickly and it's quite a stressful time, so it's going to feel good to relax for a bit and focus on school."
"Frank is a quiet leader for us," said Nobes. "He's one of our best penalty-killers and it's great to see him score his first goal as a Redmen in the fashion that he did, with a great one-timer. His teammates were pretty pumped for him."
Toronto's Matt Campagna ruined Redmen netminder Jacob Gervais-Chouinard's shutout bid at 10:14 of the second as the teams closed the period at 4-1. He was called upon to make only one save in the final stanza. It marked the sixth time in school history that the Redmen had held their opponents to one shot or fewer. The McGill record for fewest shots allowed in a period is zero, by the Varsity Blues in the second stanza of a 5-0 loss to McGill on Jan. 22, 1994.
Gervais-Chouinard, an economics senior from Sherbrooke, Que., made 13 saves as his record improved to 5-2. Toronto rookie Evan Johnson conceded six markers on 44 shots as he dropped to 0-2.
McGill was 3-for-9 on the power play and killed off all five U of T chances in a game that featured 88 minutes in penalties, including 58 to the Varsity Blues. The Redmen PP unit is now ranked fourth of 20 teams in the OUA, with a success rate of 21.8 per cent. The PK squad is ranked 12th and operating at 81.7 per cent efficiency.
The Redmen improved to 12-3-2 and currently sit second in the OUA East with 26 points, one point shy of Queen's (13-4-1) who will be visiting McConnell Arena early in the New Year, when they take on McGill in the annual Management Carnival Week Game on Friday, the 13th. Before that, however, the Redmen return to the ice on Jan. 6, when they play the first of back-to-back road confrontations against the Lancers (10-6-2) in Windsor, Ont.
Toronto (1-14-2), which has now lost five straight games, will resume league play on Jan. 6, when they return to Montreal to clash with Concordia (11-5-0).

Ridgebacks roll into holiday break with big win over Paladins
OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT men's hockey team closed out conference action in 2016 with a 7-2 victory over the RMC Paladins Saturday night at the Campus Ice Centre.
With the lopsided win, UOIT heads into the holiday break with a 12-5-1 record, good enough for third place in the OUA eastern conference standings with 25 points. Going into the new year, a number of teams are still in the hunt for the conference title with only seven points separating first from sixth. Queen's (13-4-1) leads the way with 27 points while McGill (12-3-2) is in second place with 26.
UOIT led wire-to-wire on Saturday with Ryan Doucette (Waterloo, Ont.) scoring two first period goals marking his sixth and seventh of the season.
The Ridgebacks continued to add to their lead as Nate Mitton (Kitchener, Ont.) and Connor Jarvis (Port Union, Ont.) scored second period markers to give UOIT a 4-0 lead after 40 minutes. For Mitton, it was his second goal in as many nights.
RMC fifth-year veteran Alex Pym cut the Ridgeback lead to 4-1 six minutes into the third, but a Tyler Mayea (Burlington, Ont.) blast from the point 34 seconds later restored UOIT's four-goal lead. For Mayea, it was his first career OUA goal in 29 games.
Jack Patterson (Bedford, N.S.) and Jarvis would close out the game with goals for UOIT while Seamus Maguire scored for RMC. Patterson has scored in back-to-back games while Jarvis leads UOIT in goals with 10 in 18 games.
Malik Johnson (Montreal, Que.) had a four-point night, assisting on the Ridgebacks final four goals. Johnson is fifth in team scoring with 13 points, 11 of which are assists. Also having multi-point games were Doucette and Jarvis with two goals apiece, Mitton with a goal and an assist and Alex Yuill (Wellington, Ont.) who ended up with two assists.
Tyson Teichmann had a bounce back game after being pulled in the first period against Concordia on Friday night. The Belleville native made 37 saves matching his season high en route to his sixth victory.
RMC was 0-for-3 with the man advantage while UOIT was 1-for-2. The Ridgebacks penalty killing unit ranks fourth in the league running at 88.8 per cent.
