BURLINGTON, Ont. – Ontario University Athletics (OUA) announced Tuesday the 40-player roster that will participate in the upcoming FISU Winter Universiade Training Camp in Caledon, Ont.
The players will participate in a four-day training camp where a team of 22 student-athletes will be selected to represent OUA, U Sports and Canada at the upcoming Winter Universiade in Almaty, Kazakhstan from January 25-February 10.
Attending training camp are several OUA major award winners, including 2015-16 East Division Most Valuable Player (MVP), UQTR Patriotes right-winger Guillaume Asselin (Quebec City, Que.). A season ago, Asselin led CIS in both goals (27) and points (47), while his six game-winning goals ranked him first in the province.
Asselin isn't the only former OUA MVP to be selected to the roster as Queen's Gaels goaltender Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) will also attend training camp later next month. In nine games this season for the Gaels, Bailie, who was named OUA East Division MVP and Rookie of the Year following the 2013-14 season, ranks fifth in OUA with a 2.20 goals against average.
Up front a pair of former OUA Rookie of the Year Award winners will attend camp as Carleton Ravens forward Brett Welychka (London, Ont.) and Windsor Lancers forward Dylan Denomme (Windsor, Ont.) have been selected to participate.
Queen's Gaels defenceman Spencer Abraham (Campbellville, Ont.) headlines the roster as the 2014-15 East Division Rookie of the Year and Defenceman of the Year will attend training camp looking to trade his tricolour jersey in for the red and white of Canada.
Joining Abraham on the list of blueline hopefuls is York Lions defenceman Derek Sheppard (Ajax, Ont.). The Ajax, Ont. native took home OUA West Division Defenceman of the Year honours last year after he had 30 points to lead all defencemen in his division.
A full breakdown of the roster can be found below.
Head coach Brett Gibson (Queen's) will oversee training camp along with assistant coaches Craig Duncanson (Laurentian), Marty Johnston (Carleton) and Brian Bourque (Waterloo).
Training camp will be held at Teen Ranch (20682 Hurontario St) in Caledon, Ont. from December 27-30, 2016.
