Anderson scores in double OT to give Gaels 1-0 series lead over Ottawa

KINGSTON, Ont. (Feb. 15, 2017) – The No. 10 Queen's Gaels and third seed in the OUA East took down the sixth seed Ottawa Gee-Gees in double-overtime on Wednesday night as Dylan Anderson (Greely, Ont.) scored at the 17:19 mark of the second overtime period to seal the win.

KINGSTON, Ont. (Feb. 15, 2017) – The No. 10 Queen's Gaels and third seed in the OUA East took down the sixth seed Ottawa Gee-Gees in double-overtime on Wednesday night as Dylan Anderson (Greely, Ont.) scored at the 17:19 mark of the second overtime period to seal the win.

The Gaels now lead the best-of-three series 1-0 and will look for the sweep when they visit Ottawa on Friday night. That game can be seen live on OUA.tv starting at 7:30pm.

GAME FLOW
The first period was action-packed and fast paced between these to OUA East clubs. While both teams had a number of chances, the Gaels held the momentum early. The first chance of the game came on a Gaels shot that hit the post ten minutes in but just two minutes later the Gaels were able to capitalize. After Queen's kept the puck in the offensive zone on the forecheck, they were then able to score on a quick snapshot from just outside the slot. Brock Edwards (Kingston, Ont.) picked up the goal, after receiving a pass from Francesco Vilardi (Kingston, Ont.). Peter Angelopolous (Nobleton, Ont.) picked up the third assist on the play and the Gaels were out in front 1-0.

Queen's was then able to kill off a four minute penalty for high sticking, allowing them to keep a 1-0 lead heading into the second.

In the second, the momentum was very even as both squads started to settle in. Seven minutes in, the Gaels scored to take a 2-0 lead. Angelopolous scored on a quick snapshot, after Vilardi won the offensive zone faceoff. The goal was similar to the first for Queen's as it beat Ottawa goaltender Anthony Brodeur above the shoulder from a bad angle. The Gee-Gees saw enough from Brodeur and made a goaltending change down 2-0 as Graham Hunt handled the duties for the rest of the night.

The move work for Ottawa as they responded, scoring a breakaway goal. Connor Sills scored for the Ottawa with Marco Azzano assisting with a lead pass after a Gael fell and lost the puck in the offensive zone. Several minutes later, the Gee-Gees picked up their second goal of the period. Jacob Harris scored on a backhand shot, with John Deacon and Brendan Jacome assisting. This led to a tie game heading into the third.

In the third, the game remained very tight, with opportunities coming from both teams. However, neither team was able to capitalize, forcing the game into overtime period.

In spite of a number of close chances, the first overtime period remained scoreless. Ottawa controlled the play for much of the period but Queen's had more scoring opportunities. After four periods the shots favoured Queen's 43-31.

In the second overtime the Gaels continued to put the pressure on Hunt. Darcy Greenaway (Wilton, Ont.) had a pair of chances in close but couldn't put the puck away. The Gee-Gees worked hard to beat Gaels starting netminder Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) but the veteran held his ground even killing off an Ottawa powerplay.

As the Gaels continued to get offensive pressure they finally broke through late in the second overtime. Eric Ming (Williamstown, Ont.) was able to work the puck behind the Ottawa net and find a wide-open Anderson in front. He then made no mistake beating Hunt to give the Gaels a 3-2 win.
