Four teams remain undefeated at halfway point of round robin as leaders start to pull away

Waterloo, Ont. – The cream began to rise to the top through 10 draws of the 2019 OUA Curling Championships with four teams still unbeaten as Day 2 action was played out at the KW Granite Club on Friday.

In women’s action, through four games for each team, the Toronto Varsity Blues in Pool A and the Queen’s Gaels in Pool B remain the only undefeated squads.

Toronto, skipped by Mackenzie Kiemele, rolled to a pair of victories to remain perfect as they defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks 11-5 and held off the Lakehead Thunderwovles 5-3.

Two teams continue to chase the Varsity Blues for top spot in the pool with both the Carleton Ravens and the Waterloo Warriors sitting at 3-1 after perfect days on the ice.

The host Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, skipped by Kaitlin Jewer, had a tough day as they lost a pair of narrow contests to both Waterloo and Carleton to sit at 1-3 and on the verge of being eliminated from medal round contention.

Pool B sees the Queen’s Gaels, skipped by Mary Fay, comfortably on top after victories over the Ryerson Rams (6-2) and the Brock Badgers (6-3). Those results left them a win up on both the Laurentian Voyageurs and the Badgers in the race for the top seed in the pool.

In men’s action, Pool C finished four games each through Day 2 with the Western Mustangs leading the pack at 4-0. Skipped by Ryan Thompson-Brown, the Mustangs had a pair of easy games, rolling past the Brock Badgers 8-2 before pitching a shutout against Toronto in a 9-0 victory.

However, three teams sit right behind the Mustangs at 3-1 including Brock, the Guelph Gryphons and the Ryerson Rams.

Trying to hunt those teams down are the host Golden Hawks, led by skip Jeffrey Wanless, who sit at 2-2 after a nice bounce back day that saw them pick up wins over Lakehead and the Windsor Lancers.

Pool D, which has seen every team play three times, is topped by skip Tanner Horgan and the Laurentian Voyageurs at 3-0. Their one game of the day saw them defeat UOIT 7-2 as they have now scored 21 points in three games.

Four teams sit in a tie for second in the pool with medal round contention still very much in the air. The McMaster Marauders, Queen’s, Ryerson and Waterloo all own 2-1 marks after Friday’s action.

Day 3 of the OUA Curling Championships gets underway at 8 a.m. on Saturday, February 16 with five more draws throughout the course of the day.
