By the Numbers: Multi-goal games, multi-position players, and more

621 – Laurier has been a key player on the national football scene for some time and much of their success comes from their very capable offence. The Golden Hawks soared in similar fashion in the Week 2 matchup with the Queen’s Gaels, as the purple and gold racked up 621 yards on the day. Leading the charge for the Hawks was OUA MVP Kurleigh Gittens Jr., who hauled in 178 yards on 12 receptions, while Levondre Gordon (17 carries, 120 yards) powered the ground game that earned 250 on the night.

83.6 – Waterloo Warriors’ QB Tre Ford has been making his presence felt thus far, as the reigning OUA and U SPORTS rookie of the year has been putting the opposition on notice. Through two games, Ford has connected on an outstanding 83.7% of his passes (46-for-55). While there is still a lot of the season to be played, the second-year pivot’s start has put him well above the current OUA record for completion percentage in a season (71.5%); a number he will look to keep up in the team’s Week 3 game against Carleton.

26 – With a pair of close games taking place in Week 2 of the OUA football season, it was similarly impactful defensive efforts that proved to be critical in the momentum swings. Both the Guelph Gryphons and Carleton Ravens saw their winning aspirations take a big boost with a pick-six from Job Reinhart and Trevor Hoyte, respectively, with each play being taken back 26 yards for the score.

8 – It was a winning start to the season for the Queen’s women’s rugby squad this weekend, as they kicked off their campaign with a convincing 68-10 win over the Western Mustangs. In doing so, the Tricolour put together a strong team effort, as eight different Gaels accounted for the team’s 12 tries, led by Sophie de Goede’s team-high three.

6 – With Team Canada looking to make waves at the 2018 World University Wrestling Championship, the squad features a total of six OUA wrestlers donning the red and white. Among those competing are five members of the reigning national champion Brock Badgers (Shauna Kuebeck, Juwan Burgess, Indira Moores, Tyler Rowe, and Samuel Jagas) and one of the best and brightest on the York Lions squad, Alexandria Town.

2 – In what was an absolutely dominant showing from OUA Female Athlete of the Week Emma Lefebvre, the Ottawa Gee-Gees forward tallied six goals in two matches, including a pair against Trent and another four against the UOIT Ridgebacks. By registering these impressive totals, Lefebvre was able to record her first two multi-goal games in the OUA, while also eclipsing her goal total from the previous season.

1 – It was tough sledding for the RMC Paladins men’s soccer team in the latter half of the 2017 season, unable to record a win in their final nine games. The 2018 campaign, however, got off on the right foot thanks to the team’s first goal of the season from Yeungjae Ham. The defender’s tally not only ended the team’s losing streak, with the Paladins earning the 1-1 tie against Laurentian – but it also put an end to the team’s scoreless drought, which also dated back to the start of their previous streak.

0 – It was a diverse weekend for Waterloo Warriors’ Morgan Berg, who had to wear a couple of different hats for the black and gold’s soccer team against Algoma. In the teams’ first meeting, Berg stood tall between the pipes, letting in zero goals to record the clean sheet in Waterloo’s 2-0 win. In their encore outing, Berg moved out of the net as striker, and in doing so, connected on two goals and recorded an assist in the team’s 4-0 victory.
