By the Numbers: Lakehead offence, Brock wins, and Ryerson recrods
125 – After a season that saw them record just two wins a year ago, the Lakehead Thunderwolves men’s basketball team is soaring to new heights this time around. Their current five-game winning streak has brought their total to eight wins on the year – four times that of their 2017-18 total – with the latest coming in emphatic fashion. In their game against the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, not only did the T’Wolves claim the win, but they did so by a 48-point margin. Their 125-point explosion was also the highest total of any OUA squad this year.

19.80 – York thrower Brittany Crew had a phenomenal weekend competing in the friendly confines of the Toronto Track & Field Centre at the York Open, earning the gold medal and setting a new school record of 19.80m in the weight throw event. In the process, Crew erased her own record of 19.38m she set in 2015. She also continued her dominance in the shot-put event, winning with a throw of 17.16m, outpacing her nearest competitor by 49cm.

18 – After playing their way to a Queen’s Cup final a year ago, the Brock Badgers men’s hockey team is making a strong case for a return visit to the championship game this year. The team, currently tied with Ryerson atop the OUA’s West Division and ranked No. 7 in the country, picked up their 18th win on the year on Sunday, defeating York 3-1, and in doing so, set the new program record for single-season wins.

17 – Just when you think Ali Sow has done it all this season for the Golden Hawks, the sophomore adds yet another impressive performance to his season-long dominance. With Laurier in a tough battle against the Western Mustangs this weekend and the team finding themselves down by seven in the third quarter, Sow put the purple and gold on his back and willed his squad to victory. The reigning Rookie of the Year notched 22 second-half points, including 17 straight at one point to power the Hawks to the win. Sow would finish with 32 points on 68.8 FG% and 60 3PT%.

16 – The storied career of one of the UOIT Ridgebacks’ all-time greats added another chapter this past weekend, as Kassidy Nauboris earned another accolade on the ice. The OUA Female Athlete of the Week powered her squad to a pair of wins this week and the fifth-year forward’s seven points were a key factor. Among those seven points – five of which came via the pass – the veteran managed to pick up her 16th assist on the year to set a new single-season mark for the program.

13 – The Brock Badgers have dominated the mats in recent memory; a trend that continued this past weekend in Guelph at the OUA Wrestling Championships. Both the men’s and women’s squads captured yet another provincial banner for the program, which was just business as usual for the St. Catharines squad. Thanks to the teams’ combined 13 of 19 gold medals on the day, the Badgers men have now captured 21 banners overall, while the women have collected 18 in just 22 years of OUA women’s wrestling.

8 – The RMC Paladins weren’t able to come away with the win on Saturday against the Nipissing Lakers, but it wasn’t all bad news for the red and white. Cameron Lamport kept his recent hot streak rolling and extended his point-streak to an impressive eight games. Lamport’s goal, which tied the game at 3-3 at the time, now gives him five tallies and six assists during his streak and has him atop the Paladins squad in both goals and points on the year.

6 – The final week of the men’s hockey regular season is upon us, but as the home stretch is upon us, there is still plenty left to be determined in the standings. Just one team has been eliminated from playoff contention to this point – a feat that only happened this past Sunday – and a big reason why is the ever-growing parity across the conference. A prime example of this immensely tough field is the fact that the third-place and 10th place teams in the OUA’s West Division are separated by a mere six points with just two games left to play, meaning a lot can happen before the season ultimately wraps up.

4 – Ryerson only hit the ice once this week, but that 60+ minutes was enough for Brooklyn Gemmill to make her mark in the Rams women’s hockey record books. In the team’s cross-town clash with Toronto, Gemmill scored a program-record four goals and also added an assist in the team’s 6-5 overtime victory. Gemmill is the first player in Rams history to score four goals in a game and to record five points, which now gives her a sixth-ranked mark of 19 on the year.

4 – There’s no telling what can happen on the ice in the OUA, especially with the postseason just days away, and Laurentian’s Kaden Ruest is a prime example. The defenceman is not known for his offensive game, but rather his defensive skill, but all of that went out the window when the Voyageurs took on the Queen’s Gaels. Ruest entered the game with a total of just three points on the year, but was able to eclipse that in the one outing, picking up a four points (1G, 3A) in his team’s crucial 6-4 win.
