By the Numbers: Stepping up, scoring big, and making up for lost time

71 – Third-year setter Jordan Figueira totaled 71 assists in leading the Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team to a four-point weekend at home, including 33 in their 3-0 win over Guelph and another 38 in their 3-1 victory against Waterloo. With the impressive effort, Figueira now ranks second in total assists (410) in the conference and is a big part of why the Varsity Blues have already surpassed last season’s win total and currently sit in first place in the East Division.

47.74 – One the most explosive athletes in all of U SPORTS Track & Field was at it again on the weekend at the University of Michigan. Philip Osei, the 28-year-old Toronto native, dominated the NCAA competition at the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Osei won gold in the men’s 400m, setting a meet record with a time of 47.74. That performance headlined a podium sweep for the Guelph Gryphons in the men’s 400m, with teammates Daniel Harper (47.89) and Josh Hamilton (49.43) finishing 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

25 - A four-point weekend for the captain of the Rams women's hockey team saw her reach a new career milestone. Kryshanda Green netted two goals on Friday night against Queen's and in doing so, became the Rams all-time leader in goals scored. She now has 25 goals to her name. The next day, Green tallied two assists as Ryerson defeated UOIT 4-0 to earn some valuable points in the standings.

24.83 - Kylie Masse won two individual races, one relay, and broke two meet records in leading the Varsity Blues women’s swimming team to a dominant win over the Western Mustangs in dual-meet action on Saturday night. Masse took a break from her usual backstroke events, but dominated nonetheless at Varsity Pool, winning the 50m freestyle in a meet record time of 24.83 seconds. Her time in the event would have captured OUA gold a year ago, while also earning U SPORTS silver, behind only a fellow Olympian.

23 – To take down one of the country’s best, players need to step up, which is exactly what Laurentian’s Bailey Tabin did on the weekend. With her Voyageurs women’s basketball team taking on the defending OUA and U SPORTS champion, Carleton Ravens, the second-year forward poured in a career-best performance, notching 23 points in her team’s upset win over the top-10 squad. She followed that up with another 20+ point effort against the No. 5 Gee-Gees.

13 – It was a career night for Laurier’s Kyle Jenkins as he played a key role in helping his Golden Hawks men’s hockey team down the No. 10 Western Mustangs. Jenkins’ three assists – one of which came on the game-winning powerplay goal early in the second period – were a career high in both assists and points in a game with Laurier. Jenkins is now riding a three-game point streak and has amassed 13 points in total this season to already surpass his rookie mark (8).

12 – First-year goaltender Troy Timpano saw this first action of the season this weekend and made the most of his opportunity with the Ryerson Rams. Timpano was called into action mid-game on Thursday night and he turned aside all 12 shots he faced through the third period and overtime to earn his first OUA win. Timpano then got his first start on Saturday night in Waterloo and turned aside 33 of 36 shots to help the Rams earn a tight 4-3 win over Laurier.

5 – She may not have started her season on time as a result of an injury, but York Lions Erin Locke has certainly been making up for lost time since her return to the ice. Since missing the first 10 games of the season, Locke has taken the OUA by storm was nine points in her first five games, scoring at least one goal in each of those affairs. Her latest performances included three goals and an assist, including both game-winners for her Lions over the weekend.
