By the Numbers: Career highs, first-year wins, and gridiron dominance

47 – The Carleton Ravens’ impressive streak has come to an end, as their women’s basketball team was handed defeat for the first time since their 2017 U SPORTS semifinal loss against the McGill Martlets. By dropping the 56-52 decision to the Lakehead Thunderwolves this past weekend, not only did the Ravens see their overall 34-game winning streak snapped, but also their 47-game streak against OUA competition, which dated back to the start of the 2016-17 season.

28 – What a homecoming it was for Hamilton, Ont. native JV Mukama this weekend. Playing at McMaster, in addition to bringing down a whopping 15 rebounds, dishing out six assists, and collecting four steals, Mukama set a new career-high for the second straight week with 28 points, all in front of his family in attendance. The fifth year forward is now seventh in OUA scoring (19.3 points per game) and leads the league in steals.

23 – They’ve galloped through all challenges placed in front of them for the past two seasons, and with their 47-24 win over the Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday in the Mitchell Bowl, the Western Mustangs kept their winning ways intact for another trip to the Vanier Cup. When the purple ponies line up against the Laval Rouge et Or for the second straight season, they’ll do so backed by what is now a 23-game winning streak, dating back to the start of the 2017 season.

11 – Ali Sow, the conference’s second leading scorer, averaged 22.5 points per game in Laurier’s two contests this weekend. Their come-from-behind win against York, which helped move the Golden Hawks into second place in the OUA West Division, featured an impressive individual effort from Sow down the stretch, as the second-year guard picked up the team’s final 11 points, including a game-tying three-pointer and a fade-away jumper to take the lead.

9 – After earning a spot on last year’s OUA All-Rookie squad, RMC’s Lauryne Mvuezolo had a weekend to remember in the Paladins final home games of 2018. The second-year outside hitter put on a show against Nipissing this weekend, finishing with a game-high 26 points thanks to 16 kills and a solo block. More impressive, however, was her serving performance, as Mvuezolo set a school record with an incredible nine aces in a single match. Mvuezolo sits first in the OUA with 20 aces so far this season.

3 – It is no small feat to notch three goals in a single game, and when it is the first such hat trick of your university career, it is certainly one to remember. A pair of players lit the lamp three times on the weekend for their first trifectas, as Nipissing Lakers’ Jetta Derenoski and UOIT Ridgebacks Danny Elser each recorded top-tier individual efforts en route to their teams’ respective lopsided victories.

2:00.13. – Rebecca Smith won two races and broke three records in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's swimming team to two victories on Saturday evening. One of these wins came in the 200 freestyle in a time of 2:00.13, which helped the decorated international swimmer better the previous meet record by six seconds and pick up a time that would have earned her top spot at last year’s OUA Championships.

1 – For the second straight week, Ligaya Stinellis shone on the mats for McMaster. The first-year Marauder finished first in her weight class after topping the division at the Ryerson Open a week earlier. Stinellis defeated Toronto's Alina Khan 10-0, Lakehead's Meagan Smith via pin, and York's Gurleen Tak by an injury default to claim gold and top the round robin format at the York Open.
