By the Numbers: Records are made to be broken

126 – It has been quite a stretch for the Hunchak brothers of late, and after Brett managed to etch his name in the York Lions record books a week ago, Colton followed suit this week thanks to his 9-catch, 116-yard performance. With his second catch of the game – the 126th of his Lions career – Hunchak surpassed Adam Adeboboye and Will Austin to become the program’s all-time receptions leader.

110 – It’s hard to start a football game any better than the Queen’s Gaels did on Saturday when they welcomed the Toronto Varsity Blues to Richardson Stadium. In front of their home crowd, Nathan Langley gave the Gaels a high-octane boost right off the opening kickoff, returning the ball 110 yards to the house for his first career touchdown.

75 – Waterloo Warriors men’s rugby came out strong in their match against the Brock Badgers on Sunday. Among those leading the charge for the black and gold was third-year outside centre Mitch Voralek, who tallied 25 points on the afternoon. All in all, the Warriors tacked on another 50 to Voralek’s impressive mark to bring their total to 75; a positive for this year’s squad, but also for the program as a whole, as they haven’t seen an offensive explosion of that level in over a decade.

60 – Now two weeks into the women’s rugby season, several players have been doing their part to give their teams the competitive edge. Certainly, one of the most impactful ways to do so is on the scoresheet and plenty of student-athletes have already added their names to this season’s tally. 68 players have recorded at least two points for their squad on the year, including 60 that have earned at least one try; a pack that is led by the six from Queen’s Gaels’ Rachel Hickson.

49 – Once again, Guelph striker Jace Kotsopoulos is off to a sizzling start to the season, and thanks to his early efforts, now finds himself in the Gryphons record books. The two-time reigning Guelph Male Athlete of the Week, who also took home the OUA’s honour a week ago, notched four goals this weekend, but it was the final tally that put him atop Guelph’s all-time scoring list. Now with 49 markers, including a U SPORTS leading nine this year alone, Kotsopoulos continues to thrive for the Gryphs’ in his fourth year.

5 – It’s no secret that the Brock Badgers women’s rugby team boasts a talented roster; something they showcased early and often in their win against Laurier over the weekend. As part of their 69-point effort, the Badgers received significant contributions from Taylor Hurd, as the second-year star powered through for five tries on the day.

5 – The game’s not over until it’s over and the McMaster Marauders baseball team proved just that in one of their opening weekend tilts with the Laurier Golden Hawks. The Marauders found themselves facing a three-run deficit heading into the seventh inning, but strung together an impressive five-run output, capped by Mark Zanette’s go-ahead home run, to take the lead and eventually win the game by a 9-8 final against last year’s OUA silver medalists.

McMaster and Laurier split their doubleheader today. Game 1 was a 3-2 hard fought loss. Game two saw the Marauders come from behind on a Mark Zanette go ahead home run for the 9-7 win. Getting his first career OUA victory on the mound, in relief, was Matt Tyas.

1 – Thanks to a 0-0 draw with the Windsor Lancers on Sunday, the Algoma Thunderbirds women’s soccer team earned the program’s first point since joining the OUA for the 2013-14 season. The T’Birds were able to stand tall against the determined Lancers squad – who mustered a total of 17 shots – led by Algoma goalkeeper Rayne Tuer, who turned away all nine that came on goal to secure the clean sheet and the draw.

0 – The Guelph Gryphons are among the best in the country when it comes to women’s soccer, and one of the many individuals helping the reigning OUA champions to their current no. 9 ranking is goalkeeper Libby Brenneman. Through six games this season, Guelph has seen some of the best goalkeeping around, with Brenneman yet to concede a goal in her five appearances. Her four clean sheets are already more than halfway to her total from all of last season (7).
