By the Numbers: Program records, career bests, and late-game heroics

47 – Kevin Domingue continued to fill the net for the Ottawa Gee-Gees men’s hockey team to start the new year, helping the team extend their lead atop the OUA standings with wins over McGill and UQTR. The third-year from Laval, Que. scored one goal in each game, including a third period game winner against UQTR giving him a team leading 13 goals on the season. With those goals, Domingue set a new modern program record for career goals, scoring his 47th and 48th, respectively.

40 – The Carleton Ravens may be the reigning champions, but the talent across OUA women’s basketball runs much deeper than just the 2017-18 Critelli Cup champions. The black birds took on two such opponents during their trip to Toronto this past weekend, managing to come out on top in both. One individual who stood out for the Ravens on both nights was Nicole Gilmore, who in the two games, poured in a total of 40 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to power Carleton past Ryerson and Toronto.

39 – Malcolm Glanville was at his offensive best for Guelph men’s basketball in a crucial 91-87 overtime win against the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday, wowing the home crowd with a career-high 39 points. The transfer from NCAA DII Oklahoma Panhandle State had an eye-popping stat line in the second game of the doubleheader with Lakehead, making 12 of 21 shots from the field, 12 of his 15 free throws, and adding 8 rebounds.

22 – First-year guard Iñaki Alvarez totaled 30 points as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s basketball team hosted two nationally-ranked opponents this weekend at Goldring Centre. Alvarez led all players with a career-high 22 points as the Blues narrowly fell, 70-68, to the Carleton Ravens on Sunday afternoon. The native of Altafulla, Spain added two assists and two rebounds on the day, truly saving his best performance of the season against the top-ranked squad across the country.

MBB: The Blues played their hearts out but drop a narrow 70-68 decision to the No. 1 @CURavens.

5 – Wins haven’t been easy to come by for the Laurier women’s hockey team this year, but they managed to soar to new heights during the opening weekend of 2019. Buoyed by a career-high three points (2 G, 1 A) from Emily Woodhouse, the Golden Hawks, who took down the Laurentian Voyageurs by a 5-2 final, achieved their highest offensive output since a 5-1 win on November 29, 2015.

2 – What a start to the new year for the Nipissing Lakers. For the first time in program history, the women’s basketball team has won back-to-back games. The historic two-game stretch came to fruition thanks to a 65-61 win in the opener over the York Lions and a 61-49 victory in the second leg against the Queen’s Gaels. With the wins, the Lakers now improve to 3-9 on the year.

0:43 – For just the second time this season, the Windsor Lancers women’s hockey team found themselves on the winning side when all was said and done, and it once again came via an overtime effort. After tying the game with under three minutes to play against the top-10 ranked Ryerson Rams, the Windsor Lancers then penned the final chapter with an overtime-winner from Meredith Goldhawk just 0:43 into the extra frame.

0.8 – The Algoma Thunderbirds and Waterloo Warriors went toe-to-toe in their back-to-back this weekend, with the former coming out on top in both affairs. Playing a significant role in helping the T’Birds men’s basketball squad start their 2019 calendar year in winning fashion was the OUA Male Athlete of the Week, Nathan Riley. Riley poured in 25 points in the team’s first game and doubled down with a 24-point performance in the second leg. But perhaps no points were more significant than the two that came with just 0.8 seconds remaining to give the home side a slim 80-78 win.
