By the Numbers: Sizzling starts to the season spark early success
2002 – Not since Labour Day in 2002 had the Waterloo Warriors earned a win against their cross-town rivals, Laurier, in the Battle of Waterloo, but a 34-32 victory on Saturday changed all of that. The 16-year drought came to a dramatic end after a back-and-forth affair, with the game’s winning touchdown coming via an 88-yard pass and run from Tre Ford to Tyler Ternowski in the dying minutes.

233 – Not only did McMaster Marauders receiver Tommy Nield nab a pair of highlight reel catches, but he did so en route to an historic effort for the Hamilton squad. The slotback’s 233 yards were the second most gained by a McMaster receiver in a single game in school history. Nield also scored two touchdowns for the endzone-hungry Marauders, creating a big boost for a team that had just one coming into the day.

29:04.72 – The Queen’s Gaels cross country teams were quick to flex their muscle on their home turf this weekend, with both the men’s and women’s sides claiming top spot at the Queen’s Invitational. The men’s side crossed with the top five finishes for a perfect score of 15, while the women’s team swept the podium and claimed five of the top eight spots overall. Pacing the Gaels and the entire women’s field was rookie Brogan MacDougall, who finished the 8km race with a time of 29:04.72.

16.5 – Luke Korol, this week’s top defensive player in the OUA, was a menace against the Windsor Lancers on Saturday. The Guelph Gryphons linebacker has a knack for being all over the field; something that he translated into a gaudy total of 16.5 tackles on the day. The mark not only gives Korol the highest single-game total in the OUA this season, but it also has him ranked first in the conference with 9.6 tackles per game in 2018.

4 – After earning co-MVP in her first season with the Lions, York’s Jaslan Stirling has come roaring out of the gates in her second year as well. After managing three shots on goal in the team’s opening clash with the Guelph Gryphons, Stirling was able to find the back of the net multiple times in her team’s 9-0 win against McGill. Stirling’s four goals, beyond helping to power York to a 1-0-1 record on the day, also have her ranked first in the OUA goal-scoring race in the early stages of the season.

3 – Second-year rower William Sati reached the podium three times, as the Varsity Blues rowing team opened their 2018 season at the Guelph Invitational on Saturday. The computer engineering major won the lightweight men's single, before teaming up with Andrei Vovk to finish second in the lightweight men's double. Sati rounded out his podium finishes by helping Toronto's men's eight to a bronze-medal finish in a tight race with Brock for third place.

3 – The Nipissing Lakers have had a strong start to their women’s soccer season, and among their many standout moments have been their kryptonite-like play against the no. 7 Ottawa Gee-Gees. The Gee-Gees have earned a win in all but two of their eight games so far, with both the tie and the loss coming against the Lakers. Their first defeat, which came this weekend, was doled out thanks to a strong first half effort from the northern squad wherein they netted three goals – the first coming from Kristen Farkas, followed by a pair from Madison Logan.

-2 – Zach Greifenberger, a first-year golfer for the Queen’s Gaels, had a standout debut to open up the season, winning two tournaments on the weekend. First, Greifenberger took the Carleton Invitational shooting a 2-under (70) to secure the individual win and aid in the Gaels first place finish in the men’s division. Then the Gaels headed home for the Bert Kea Queen’s Invitational, where Greifenberger grabbed his second individual win by shooting a 2-under (68) for a clean sweep of the weekend tournaments.
