By the Numbers: Milestone stats, school records, and hot streaks

2012 – Backed by Brad van Schubert’s 36-save performance, the RMC Paladins men’s hockey team was able to start their season in the win column, topping the Stingers 2-1 last week. Not only did the red and white survive the late barrage from Concordia to pick up a big win for this season, they also managed to earn a victory against the reigning OUA bronze medalists, Concordia, for the first time since the 2012 season.

355 – It was a memorable day to say the least for Western Mustangs RB Cedric Joseph. The Montreal, Que. native ran for 355 yards for the purple ponies in their win against Windsor – all in the first half – coming up just 40 yards shy of the all-time U SPORTS record for yards in a game (395). With his team up big at halftime, Joseph sat for the remainder of the game, but did finish with the Western record for single-game rushing yards and checks in with the third-most in U SPORTS history.

187 – The reigning OUA football MVP has continued to put up impressive numbers again this season, showcasing his abilities in multiple facets of the game this year. Despite his splashes in special teams, however, he remains one of the elite receivers across the country, as evidenced by his newly minted title as Laurier’s all-time leader in receptions. A first quarter catch against the Carleton Ravens last week, the 187th of his Golden Hawks career, put the Ottawa native atop the school’s list.

101 – In their final home match of the year, the RMC Paladins earned their first win since 2016, beating Trent by a score of 1-0. Keeper Claudia Rusu continued her impressive campaign in net, finishing the match with 11 saves and a clean sheet for RMC. Rusu continues to lead the conference in saves with 101 on the year, standing tall amidst a flurry of action for the red and white this season.

40 – Sara Svoboda, playing at the eight position for the night, was utterly dominant in McMaster's lofty 109-0 OUA quarterfinal win over the Laurier Golden Hawks Friday at Ron Joyce Stadium. The fifth-year veteran crossed the line for four of McMaster's 17 tries, and converted 10 times for a personal total of 40 points, accounting for 37 per cent of the team's scoring.

21.6 – Fourth-year receiver Carter Matheson had an outstanding night as the Gee-Gees defeated Toronto last Thursday. Matheson racked up 258 yards and three touchdowns on only nine targets for the best game of his career. Matheson has now tallied five touchdowns in his last two games, fully arriving as a marquee downfield threat in the OUA, as evidenced by his conference-leading 21.6 yards per catch.

11 – Players were lighting the lamp all week long to kick off the OUA men’s hockey season and there was no shortage of skaters getting in on the action. A total of 69 goals were scored in the first week of action – a span that included 11 games – and while several players have found the back of the net once, the conference already boasts 11 multi-goal scorers for the season, with Windsor’s Justice Dundas and Ryerson’s Mathew Santos leading the way with three apiece.

3 – Waterloo golfer Elanna Lachaine-DeMarchi fired a two-day total of 153 this weekend to win the individual gold medal at the Toronto Invitational, leading the Warriors to the team gold medal. Lachaine-DeMarchi and her fellow Warriors golfers are flying high into the upcoming OUA Championship, having earned the top spot in their last three tournaments, a stretch that also includes team victories at the Waterloo Invitational and the Guelph Invitational.

0.920 – Not only was it a busy weekend for the Laurier women’s soccer team as a whole, but for keeper Ashley Almeida, specifically. In three games – which featured a win, loss, and tie against some of the country’s top teams – Almeida shone bright under a flurry of action. In fact, Almeida finished the week with 23 saves on 25 shots, good for a 0.920 save percentage, to come in well above season mark of .802.
