Ravens thump Dalhousie in Thunder Selects Holiday Classic opener
HALIFAX, NS — Carleton's trip to the Canadian Maritimes got off to a successful start on Wednesday, as the Ravens surged past the Dalhousie Tigers, 87-51, on Day 1 of the 2016 Thunder Selects Holiday Classic.
Despite having not played a compeitive game in 25 days following its impressive 77-51 win against No.1 McMaster on December 3, the Ravens managed to control the game over the Tigers from start to finish, beginning the competition with a decisive victory over its AUS opponent.
Carleton received an exceptional contribution from its bench, as sophomore Cynthia Dupont (Waterville, QC) and senior Stephanie Carr (Stittsville, ON) combined for 41 points against Dalhousie. Dupont racked up a team-high 27 points (8-12 FG), including making 8 of 9 attempts from the charity stripe.
"It was nice to work off some rust," said Ravens head coach Taffe Charles, whose team defeated the Tigers for a second consecutive year at the Thunder Selects Tournament. "[We] probably got into the game a bit quicker than [Dalhousie] and the momentum of the first quarter carried us for the rest of the game."
Carleton, which finished the 2015 event with a 2-1 record, had a terrific start against Dal, outgunning its opponent for a 10-0 start. Steph Carr scored nine of her 14 points in the first, including a perfect 3-of-3 shooting display from beyond the arc. While Dal managed to close the gap to trail by only three points, 12-9, the Ravens took advantage of the Tigers' nine turnovers in the period to jump out to a 25-10 lead after one.
Fourth-year forward Catherine Traer (Chelsea, QC), who currently leads the team with a 17.2 PPG scoring average after five OUA regular season games, chipped in with six points in the second, while Cynthia Dupont added five as the Ravens put more distance between themselves and the Tigers before halftime. Carleton shot 7-for-16 (43.8%) from long distance in the opening twenty minutes to secure a 52-27 scoreline at the break.
The Ravens took advantage of their 25-point halftime margin by experimenting with some different lineups following the intermission, as the Carleton reserves saw plenty of action in the latter stages of the game.
Carleton's relentless halfcourt press tamed the Tigers' offence considerably throughout the contest, especially in the third quarter, as the Ravens held Dal to 11 points in the frame. The Ravens entered the fourth up 30 points, 68-38, and Cynthia Dupont closed out her exceptional day with nine points in the final period to propel the Ravens to the win.
The Ravens outscored the Tigers on second chance points, 16-6, thanks to a decisive 46-27 edge on rebounds. Carleton forward Heather Lindsay (Ottawa, ON) got her hands on a game-high 16 boards while tallying seven points, four assists and two steals.
Guards Alexandra Trivieri (St. Catharines, ON) and Steph Carr each dished out five assists, as Carleton collected its third straight win at the Thunder Selects Tournament dating back to the team's first appearance at the event last season.
Carleton, which is ranked No. 2 in the country, will take on U Sports No. 8 Saint Mary's at the Homburg Centre in the late game tomorrow evening. Saint Mary's holds a 3-0 all-time record over the Ravens, including a win over Carleton in their last meeting in October 2013. The Huskies are undefeated in AUS regular season play with a 7-0 mark. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
