Ravens soar above Badgers in home opener
OTTAWA, ON — The Carleton Ravens women's basketball program did not disappoint in its 2016-17 home opener at the Ravens' Nest on Friday, coming away with a convincing 73-49 victory over the visiting Brock Badgers.
In a game that saw Carleton trail for a only a brief spell at the onset, the Ravens controlled the majority of the contest to collect their third win of the season and earn their fourth straight decision over the Badgers.
Down 6-0 to the Badgers early in the game, a 10-2 run by Carleton helped the home side take the lead thanks to a Catherine Traer (Chelsea, QC) 3-pointer at the 4:04 mark of the frame. Ravens sophomore guard Cynthia Dupont (Waterville, QC) came off the bench and scored 6 consecutive points (3-for-3 FG) to lift the Ravens to a 20-16 first quarter advantage.
Carleton continued to pour it on in the second, with the Ravens' forwards leading the offensive attack in the quarter. Catherine Traer scored 7 points, while Elizabeth Leblanc (London, ON) added 6 points to help Carleton pull ahead 42-26 at the half.
The Ravens' ferocious defence also played a part in establishing the lead, as Carleton forced ten Brock turnovers before the intermission. Both teams shot efficiently in the opening twenty minutes, with Carleton going 19-for-33 (57.6%) from the floor and Brock hitting 50 percent (10-20 FG) of its attempts in the first half.
The second half got off to a slow start, as both sides lost their touch around the rim in the third. However, with Carleton dominating on the boards in the quarter and limiting Brock to 3-of-15 shooting from the floor, the Ravens continued to a hold a comfortable 23-point edge, 56-33, heading into the fourth.
In the final quarter of play, Ravens forward Heather Lindsay (Ottawa, ON) tallied 6 of her 10 game points, and Carleton outscored the Badgers 17-16 in the period to clinch the win.
The Ravens did an excellent job in shutting down Badgers forward Kira Cornelissen in the second half, limiting her to only 2 points amd 12 points in the game. The 6-foot-1 forward had been averaging 21.3 PPG prior to tonight, but a tough interior presence shown by Carleton forced Brock to look for other scoring options in the latter stages of the contest.
Entering the matchup, the Badgers were one of the poorest shooting teams from beyond the arc in the entire nation, and their woeful form – 0-for-6 on 3PT FG – continued against the Ravens, hampering Brock's ability to remain competitive once they fell behind.
Nicole Gilmore (Hamilton, ON) was the high scorer for the Ravens, posting 15 points (6-11 FG) while adding a team-high 10 rebounds to collect her first double-double of the campaign. Catherine Traer and Elizabeth Leblanc both contributed 14 points and 4 rebounds.
Carleton must now turn its attention to the McMaster Marauders – the No.1 ranked team in Canada – who will pay a visit to the Ravens' Nest on Saturday. The Ravens will aim to snap their three-game losing streak to the Marauders in a highly anticipated matchup of two top 5 teams.
