Rams win streak grows to four with victory over Algoma
SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. - The Ryerson Rams women's basketball team collected their fourth straight win on Friday night, defeating the Algoma Thunderbirds 59-49, largely due to their ability to get to the free throw line.
BOXSCORE
Though the percentage may not be pretty at 66.7% for the game, Ryerson managed to score 18 points from the charity stripe (18-for-27) and punished the Thunderbirds for sending them to the line so often. Algoma could muster just four attempts from the line, so Ryerson's +14 from the stripe certainly helped clinch the ten-point victory.
Ryerson's Kellie Ring (Ottawa, Ont.) continues to look more and more comfortable as a Ram as the games go on as she netted a season-high 22 points. Rams forward Sofia Paska (Etobicoke, Ont.) registered her fourth double-double in five games with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
The Rams got out to an early 16-8 lead through ten minutes of play and that eight-point cushion held up for much of the game. Ryerson headed to halftime leading by seven, 30-23.
Both teams struggled a bit offensively in the third quarter with the teams combining for just 14 points. Ryerson outscored the Thunderbirds 10-4 to increase the lead to 13 after three quarters. Despite the third quarter struggles, both teams saved their best quarters for last but Algoma couldn't mount a big enough come back, dropping the 59-49 decision.
Ryerson committed just six turnovers in this one, tying a team record dating back to January 8, 2010 for fewest turnovers in a game.
The Rams improve to 4-1 on the season while Algoma slides to 1-5. Ryerson has the rest of the weekend off and will return to action on Wednesday, November 30 when they host the Western Mustangs at 6:00 p.m.

Ravens rock Lakers for first win of 2016 season
NORTH BAY, ON — The Carleton Ravens women's basketball team collected its first win of the regular season on Friday night with a comfortable 71-39 road victory over the Nipissing Lakers.
A one-sided first half in favour of the Ravens left little doubt that the visitors would collect two points against a Lakers team that dropped to 0-5 on the campaign with the loss.
The first quarter was highlighted by a dominant ten minutes from OUA All-Star Heather Lindsay (Ottawa, ON), who scored 12 points in the opening frame, including Carleton's first 10 points of the game. With their top scorer going to work in the paint early on, the Ravens established a 16-10 advantage after one.
With a six-point lead, the Ravens sensed an opportunity to blow the game wide open in the second. Sophomore Cynthia Dupont (Waterville, QC) scored 6 of her 10 points in the period, as the Ravens put together a blistering 23-10 run to jump out ahead, 39-20, after two.
Carleton's defence began the third quarter by holding the Lakers without a basket for nearly three and a half minutes. Three Ravens three-pointers in four scoring possessions provided Carleton with a 56-30 scoreline heading into the fourth.
Forward Catherine Traer (Chelsea, QC) scored a quick pair of buckets midway through the fourth, and senior Amanda Niyonkuru (Burlington, ON) got in on scoring act late in the contest with a couple of baskets to help Carleton finalize the outcome.
Nipissing rarely looked threatening on the offensive end throughout the game, as Carleton showed more energy and physicality than their opponent did. Carleton won the rebounding battle, 40-30, and also had 4 blocks in the paint, with two coming courtesy of Heather Lindsay.
Lindsay had another impressive outing by stuffing the stat sheet with 18 points (6-12 FG, 6-8 FT) and 19 rebounds, while frontcourt partner Catherine Traer posted 17 points (7-14 FG).
The Ravens had a handful of playmakers in the game, with guard Nicole Gilmore (Hamilton, ON) dishing out a team-high 6 assists, and Steph Carr (Stittsville, ON) providing 4 helpers.
Carleton shot 40% (28-70 FG) against the Lakers, while limiting Nipissing to 23.8% (10-42) on field goals. It is the third time that the Lakers have been held to less than 40 points in a game in only five regular-season performances.
Lakers guard Heidi Smith paced her side with 8 points.
The Ravens (1-1), ranked No.4 in the country, will go for the weekend sweep tomorrow as they travel west on the Trans-Canada Highway to face Laurentian (0-5) in Sudbury. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
