Gaels beat Redmen 4-2 to advance to Queen's Cup for the firs time since 1981

KINGSTON, Ont. (March 3, 2017) – The No. 7 Queen's Gaels defeated the No. 3 McGill Redmen 4-2 Friday evening to sweep their OUA East final series 2-0. With the win, the Gaels now advance to the OUA Queen's Cup championship and also qualify for the University Cup U SPORTS championship, both for the first time since 1981.

KINGSTON, Ont. (March 3, 2017) – The No. 7 Queen's Gaels defeated the No. 3 McGill Redmen 4-2 Friday evening to sweep their OUA East final series 2-0. With the win, the Gaels now advance to the OUA Queen's Cup championship and also qualify for the University Cup U SPORTS championship, both for the first time since 1981.

GAMEFLOW
The first period was fast-paced and evenly matched. Halfway through the period, McGill rang a shot off of the post from the slot. Several minutes later, the Gaels were able to capitalize, taking the lead over the Redmen. After a strong forecheck, Brock Edwards (Kingston, Ont.) made a quick pass into the slot to Dylan Anderson (Greely, Ont.) who made no mistake, beating the Redmen goaltender with a one-timer shot. Ryan Bloom (Calgary) picked up the third assist. This gave the Gaels a 1-0 lead heading into the second period.

In the second, Dylan Anderson scored his second goal of the night for the Gaels, one minute into the frame. Darcy Greenaway (Wilton, Ont.) made a perfect pass on a 2-on-1 to Anderson who buried another one-timer shot. Edwards picked up the second assist. This gave the Gaels a 2-0 lead.

Five minutes later, Ryan Bloom scored for the Gaels, snapping a quick shot tight to the Redmen net. Eric Ming (Williamstown, Ont.) and Slater Doggett (Oakville, Ont.) assisted on the play. McGill was able to respond, capitalizing on a 5-on-3 powerplay. Nathan Chiarlitti scored for the Redmen with Dominic Talbot-Tassi and Guillaume Gauthier assisting. Two minutes later, Queen's took a 4-1 lead after Anderson scored on the powerplay to complete the hat-trick. Francesco Vilardi (Kingston, Ont.) and Darcy Greenaway (Wilton, Ont.) picked up the assists. Before the end of the period, McGill cut the lead to 4-2. Nathanael Halbert scored for McGill with Guillaume Gauthier assisting.

In the third period, McGill was relentless on the forecheck, desperately attempting to make a comeback. Queen's goaltender Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) stood his ground, making 12 saves throughout the period. With two minutes left in the period, McGill pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. Queen's was able to respond defensively, blocking shots and clearing the puck out of their defensive zone.

In the final moments of the game, the Gaels received a standing ovation after defeating the Redmen 4-2 to advance to the OUA Queen's Cup.
