MALE: Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) – 4th yr – Queen's Gaels – Hockey
After advancing to the third round of the OUA playoffs for the first time since the 1990-00 season, Queen's Gaels goaltender Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) has been named the Investors Group OUA Male Athlete of the Week.
Bailie, a fourth-year law student-athlete, led the Gaels past the East Division rival Concordia Stingers in their best-of-three series last week. Bailie recorded 121 saves and only allowed two goals against with two wins and a shutout over the course of the series.
In Wednesday night’s opener, the Belleville, Ont. native made 49 saves in a Gaels 3-1 win over the Stingers. After making 30 saves in a 2-0 Queen’s loss in Game 2, Bailie turned aside all 42 shots he faced on Sunday as the Gaels clinched a berth in OUA East Division Finals with a 2-0 road win.
Through two rounds of the OUA playoffs, Bailie has posted a 0.99 GAA and 0.971 SV% with an OUA leading 234 saves.
Next up, Bailie and the Gaels will head to Montreal as they open their series with the McGill Redmen on Wednesday night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 pm at McConnell Arena.
FEMALE: Kylie Masse (LaSalle, Ont.) – 3td yr. – Toronto Varsity Blues – Swimming
University of Toronto Varsity Blues swimmer Kylie Masse (LaSalle, Ont.) has been named the Investors Group OUA Female Athlete of the Week after winning seven medals this past weekend at the U SPORTS Swimming Championship.
Masse, a third-year kinesiology major, not only swept the backstroke events for a second consecutive season but did so in record breaking fashion, setting new U SPORTS records in the 50m (26.53), 100m (56.80) and 200m (2:06.18) backstroke events over the three-day meet.
The LaSalle, Ont. native also earned the women's 200 IM silver medal, as well as helped the Blues capture three bronze medals in the 4x100 medley and 4x100 and 4x200 freestyle relay events.
Following the championship, Masse who won bronze for Canada at the 2016 Summer Olympics, was named U SPORTS Female Swimmer of the Year for the second consecutive season after leading Toronto to a bronze-medal finish.
