Voyaguers edge Lions in double overtime
The York University Lions men's hockey team played a hard-fought game against the Laurentian Voyageurs but ended with a 3-2 loss in double overtime at Countryside Arena in Sudbury, Ont.
It took until 17:11 of the first period until a goal was scored, when Greg Milner (Watford, Ont.) found the back of the net to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. It was short-lived, however, as Dylan Fitze scored on the power play just four seconds before the end of the period to level the score at 1-1.
The only goal of the second period came courtesy of team scoring leader Derek Sheppard (Ajax, Ont.), who added to his lead with another tally to make it 2-1 at 14:14.
It looked as though the Lions were going to hang on until the end as they maintained their lead through most of the third, but with less than three minutes remaining the Voyageurs equalized the score again on another power play marker by Andrew Tessier to pick up an important point in the OUA standings.
After the first overtime period solved nothing, Elliott Richardson gave the home team the comeback victory when he scored at 2:33 of the second overtime for the victory. The Voyageurs improved to 9-12-4 with the win, while the Lions fell to 17-6-3 but continue to hold down second place in the OUA West standings with 37 points.
The Lions will continue their northern road trip on Saturday when they head to North Bay, Ont., to face the Nipissing Lakers in a contest beginning at 7:15pm. The contest will be the team's last road game of the regular season.

Lakehead rallies to win over Warriors
The Lakehead Thunderwolves rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat the Waterloo Warriors 4-3 at the Columbia Ice Field on Friday night.
Waterloo got the only goal of the first period when Nick Halagian beat Lakehead netminder Devin Green on a two-on-one break just over six minutes into the contest.
Joey Champigny put Waterloo up 2-0 early in the second stanza and the Warriors threatened to increase their lead, but some timely saves by Green kept the Wolves in the game.
Lakehead steadied the ship and began to turn the tide as the period progressed.
Cody Alcock put the Wolves on the scoreboard near the halfway point when he broke in alone on Waterloo goalie Mike Morrison and fooled him with a hard shot to the short side. Dylan Donnelly and Patrick Murphy were credited with the assists.
Waterloo replied 27 seconds later on a one-timer by Michael Morgan that Green had no chance on.
Brennen Dubchak pulled Lakehead back to within a goal at 12:27 when he pounced on a fortuitous bounce off a Waterloo defender and fired the puck into an open cage with the Wolves on the power play. Carson Dubchak and Murphy picked up the helpers.
Lakehead's Billy Jenkins tied the game by finishing off an odd-man rush set up perfectly by Carson Dubchak 7:27 into the third, with Kelin Ainsworth getting the second assist.
It looked like the game was headed for overtime, but after a nice set-up by Justin Sefton and Carson Dubchak, Alcock fired a rocket from the slot past Morrison low on the stick side with 33 seconds to go, giving the Wolves a dramatic 4-3 victory.
On the night, Lakehead went 1-for-4 on the power play, while Waterloo was 0-for-5.
Total shots on goal in the game were 30-25 for the Warriors.
Lakehead will wind up its three-game road trip when these same two teams take to the ice again tomorrow, with the opening face-off set for 4:00 p.m.

Guelph defeat defending champs UQTR 5-1
Trois-Rivières, QC - Friday night in Trois-Rivières, the Gryphons men's hockey team picked up an impressive 5-1 road win over the defending OUA champion UQTR (Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières) Patriotes. A total of 12 different Gryphon players put their name on the score sheet in what was a well-balanced attack, led by Trevor Morbeck (1 G, 1 A) and Rob Lepine (2 A) who each finished with multi-point nights. The win moves the Gryphons to 15-9-1 on the season while UQTR falls to 14-8-3.
"Overall, it was a really good effort tonight by our guys," said Gryphons head coach Shawn Camp after the game. "I thought we started off really well in the 1st period and really pushed the pace. Our level of play dropped in the 2nd, but (Scott) Stajcer came up big and then the guys closed it out in the 3rd." The Gryphons were outshot 19-6 in the 2nd period, but several big saves from Scott Stajcer helped the Gryphons take a slim 2-1 lead to the 3rd.
In the final period, the Gryphs would push their lead to 3-1 after Seth Swenson one-timed home his 9th goal of the season on a power play. Late in regulation, the Gryphs would officially put to rest any hopes of a UQTR comeback when Trevor Morbeck and Andres Kopstals scored 44 seconds apart to seal the deal. Scott Stajcer turned away 39 of the 40 shots sent his way on the night in what was one of his strongest outings of the season.
The Gryphons will continue their two-game Quebec road trip with a Saturday night game in Montreal versus the No. 10-ranked team in the country in the Concordia Stingers (16-7-2). Puck drop at Concordia is set for 7:30pm. The game can be seen live online at www.oua.tv.

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team dropped a narrow 1-0 decision to the Laurier Golden Hawks in their final regular season home game on Friday, February 3 at Varsity Arena.

Fourth-year Blues netminder Michael Nishi posted 37 saves in the loss, while Furlong made 25 in the shutout victory.
The Varsity Blues honoured graduating players Corey Jackson, Russell Turner, Connor Cleverley and Dean Klomp in a special pre-game ceremony.

Special teams leads Stinger over Mustangs
MONTREAL – Five power play goals lifted the Concordia Stingers to a 7-4 win over the Western Mustangs on Friday night at the Ed Meagher Arena.
The loss was a tough one for Western's playoff hopes, particularly with Lakehead defeating Waterloo earlier in the evening. The purple and white now sit five points back of the Warriors for the final playoff spot in the West with only three games remaining.
Special teams were the story of the game as, especially for the first two periods, the game became a parade to the penalty box. The teams combined for 24 penalties on the night, with all but one resulting in a power play. The Mustangs converted on two of their 10 chances, while the Stingers were a potent 5-13.
Greg Dodds made 36 stops in another strong outing for Western, while Stingers goaltender Phillippe Cadorette responded with 37 saves of his own.
The Stingers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on the back of three markers on the man advantage, scored by Phillippe Sanche, Antoine Masson and Anthony Cortese. Mickael Beauregard picked up an assist on each goal.
The Mustangs would cut the lead to two just before intermission when Andrew Goldberg found a Matt Marantz rebound in the crease and scored.
They made it a one goal game just under six minutes into the second period when Spenser Cobbold tapped home a beautiful cross-crease pass from Rob Polesello on a 5-on-3.
However, things began to turn in the Stingers favor again as Concordia answered with two goals of their own to restore the three-goal advantage. Curtis Gass and Matthieu Desautels provided the offence for the Stingers as they led 5-2 after two periods.
The Mustangs kept things close in the third period as Polesello and Golberg both scored in the first five minutes of the frame, though OUA scoring leader Anthony De Luca also added one for Concordia.
That would be as close as things would get, with Sanche adding an empty net goal in the final seconds to give the Stingers a 7-4 victory.
Western continues its road trip tomorrow afternoon when they take on the UQTR Patriotes at 4 p.m. with live streaming available on OUA.tv
