MONTREAL (January 13, 2017) - The No. 5 Queen's Gaels (15-4-1) defeated the No. 3 McGill Redmen (14-4-2) 2-1 Friday night in OUA men's hockey action and a match between two of the countries best programs.
For the Gaels, it marked the second straight win over their long-time rivals from Montreal after snapping a 31 game losing streak with a win in Kingston back on November 26. The Gaels sweep the season series with the Redmen and move into the top spot in the OUA East.
GAMEFLOW
The Gaels opened the scoring in the first period. Eric Ming (Williamstown, Ont.) scored on the power play after his shot from the high slot found its way through a few players to the back of the net. Spencer Abraham (Campbellville, Ont.) and Slater Doggett (Oakville, Ont.) assisted on the play, with Doggett extending his point streak to eight games. This proved to be the only goal of the period with the Gaels and Redmen each firing 11 shots and McGill not able to convert on what would be their only power play chance of the game.
In the second, McGill was able to even the score at 1-1. Guillaume Gauthier scored an unassisted goal, beating Gaels starting netminder Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.). Both teams combined for 10 penalty minutes at the 10:26 mark of the second but the game remained tied heading into the final period. In the third, Queen's scored to break the tie in the final minutes of the period on a controversial goal. Eric Margo (North Vancouver, B.C.) lit the lamp with Luke Bertolucci (Montrose, B.C.) assisting on a goal that McGill players claimed was kicked in. After the officials conferred the goal was allowed and the Gaels took a 2-1 lead. Bailie then stood his ground with McGill's net empty and Queen's came away with the win.
