BURLINGTON, Ont. - The following athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week, presented by Investors Group, for the period ending October 11, 2016.
MALE: Danny Elser (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) – 2nd yr – UOIT Ridgebacks – Hockey
After helping the Ridgebacks men's hockey team to their first 2-0 start in program history, UOIT forward Danny Elser (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) has been selected as the Investors Group OUA Male Athlete of the Week.
Elser, a second-year criminology and justice studies major, opened the season with a pair of goals, including the game-winner, in the Ridgebacks 3-0 victory over the uOttawa Gee-Gees. The 5'10" 170 lbs forward opened the scoring at 13:15 on the power play for UOIT before adding his second of the night late in the 3rd period to help add to the Ridgebacks lead.
On Saturday against McGill, Elser, who previously played for Helsingborgs HC in Sweden, added another goal in a 5-2 UOIT victory, as the Ridgebacks beat the Redmen at McConnell Arena for the first time in program history.
Elser and the Ridgebacks will look to keep the winning streak alive on Friday as they host the visiting Laurentian Voyaguers at the Campus Ice Centre. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
FEMALE: Miranda Seifert (Regina, Ont.) – 5th yr. – Queen's Gaels – Rugby
Queen's No. 8 Miranda Seifert (Regina, SK.) has been named Investors Group OUA Female Athlete of the Week after a huge performance in the Gaels regular season finale against the Russell Division rival York Lions.
The fifth-year geography major scored five tries as the Gaels defeated the Lions 55-5. With playoff seeding riding on the outcome of the game, Queen's needed to beat the Lions by more than seven points, score four or more tries themselves, and hold York to less than four tries to catch the Lions in the standings and win the tie-breaker.
The Regina, SK native scored the first two tries of the game for Queen's before adding a third just before the end of the first half. The 5'6" No. 8 added another two tries in the second half, almost single-handedly sending the Gaels into the playoffs with the home field advantage for the quarter-finals.
It will be déjà vu for Seifert and the Gaels as they will host the Lions on Saturday at Nixon Field in Kingston, Ont. in a rematch with the winner advancing to take on the winner of the other Russell division quarter-final between the University of Toronto Varsity Blues and the defending champion McMaster Marauders.
