MALE: Andrew Fritsch (Brantford, Ont.) – 3rd yr – Laurier Golden Hawks – Hockey
The Laurier Golden Hawks men’s hockey team clinched a playoff berth this weekend thanks in large part to the play of forward Andrew Fritsch (Brantford, Ont.) who has been named the Investors Group OUA Male Athlete of the Week.
Fritsch, a third-year general arts student-athlete, had six points in two road games as the Golden Hawks defeated the No. 9 ranked Carleton Ravens and RMC Paladins.
The Brantford, Ont. native got Laurier off to a flying start on Friday as he gave the Golden Hawks a 1-0 lead on the power play before setting up Derek Shoenmakers to make it 2-0 after 20 minutes. Fritsch and the Golden Hawks would go on to win the game 4-2.
Back in action on Saturday, Fritsch, who was drafted in the sixth round by the Phoenix Coyotes back in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, had two goals, including the game winner, and two assists in a 4-3 Golden Hawks victory versus the Paladins. The four point performance was the first of his U SPORTS career.
In his first season with the Golden Hawks after transferring from St. Thomas prior to the start of the season, Fritsch has 11 goals and 16 assists for 27 points in 25 games.
The Golden Hawks hope Fritsch keeps up his torrid pace on Friday when they travel to Varsity Arena in Toronto to take on the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.
