MALE: Mark Rogal (Vaughan, Ont.) – 3rd yr – Toronto Varsity Blues – Soccer
It was a clean sweep for University of Toronto Varsity Blues goaltenders as Mark Rogal (Vaughan, Ont.) of the men’s soccer team has been named the Investors Group OUA Male Athlete of the Week.
Rogal, a third-year finance major, made 13 saves this weekend at the OUA championship as the Varsity Blues won bronze, earning a berth to this week's national championship in Guelph, Ont.
In a narrow 1-0 loss to the top-ranked York Lions in the semifinals, Rogal made nine saves .
The Vaughan, Ont. native and the Blues bounced back in the bronze medal game with Rogal making four saves as Toronto upset the host and No. 4 ranked Ryerson Rams.
The Blues will now travel to Guelph on Thursday as they open the CIS men’s soccer championship as the No. 2 seeded Cape Breton Capers.
FEMALE: Valencia Yordanov (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) – 2nd yr. – Toronto Varsity Blues – Hockey
It was a great weekend between the pipes for University of Toronto Varsity Blues goaltender Valencia Yordanov (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) who has been named Investors Group OUA Female Athlete of the Week.
Yordanov, a second-year physics major, combined for 59 saves as the Blues picked up a pair of victories against the Windsor Lancers and the No. 8 ranked Western Mustangs.
On Saturday afternoon, the Port Coquitlam, B.C. native made 30 saves, including 14 in the third period, as the Blues defeated the Windsor Lancers 4-1 at Varsity Arena.
She followed that up on Sunday with a 29-save shutout as the Blues beat the Mustangs 2-0
In just six games this season, Sunday’s shutout was already her third of the season to go along with a 946 save percentage, the second highest mark in the conference.
Yordanov and the Blues will now shift their focus to Friday night when they will host the Waterloo Warriors.
