Lakers defeat Paladins on 8th annual Military Appreciation Night
A slow start didn't end up hurting the Nipissing Lakers men's hockey team, as they made it two wins in a row thanks to a comeback victory Friday night.
The Lakers used a five goal second period to pick up a key 5-1 win over the visiting RMC Paladins and grab their fourth win of the season in the process.
It wasn't a great start for the Lakers, who were dominated in the first period – outshot 12-3 and trailed 1-0.
But in the second, the Lakers took control and cruised to the win, despite some physical play and scrums towards the end of the game.
Trailing 1-0, the Lakers tied the game just over five minutes into the second period and less than 20 seconds later, took the lead.
Colin Campbell scored to tie the game and Guillaume Naud, with a slick backhand, gave Nipissing the lead.
Brock Morrison, Nathan Glass and Dylan Staples were all in on the first two Lakers goals.
From there, the Lakers would add three more.
Steven Deeg continued his hot play, scoring his third goal in two games and with two power play markers from Joel Herbert and Sam Gleason, the Lakers sealed the win.
Morrison and Campbell drew assists on Deeg's goal, while rik Robichaud and Cody Gratton picked up helpers on Herbert's.
That goal was a perfect redirect off a nice feed by Robichaud on the doorstep.
Gleason finished the scoring with his first OUA goal late in the period, with Campbell and Morrison each adding to their totals.
They both finished with three points on the night.
Domenic Graham earned the win, but was forced to leave with an apparent illness about midway through the game.
Jeremy Pominville closed things out, making 14 straight saves.
He also got a lot of help from the Lakers defenders, who blocked a tonne of shots throughout the game and especially late, protecting the lead.
Nipissing will close out the weekend against Carleton Saturday night at 7:15pm at Memorial Gardens.

McGill blueliner nets overtime winner as hockey Redmen bite Lions
MONTREAL -- Defenceman Dominic Talbot-Tassi of Mascouche, Que., scored the overtime winner as eighth-ranked McGill edged York 3-2 in OUA men's hockey before a near capacity crowd of 745 at McConnell Arena on Friday.
The Redmen outshot the Lions by a 35-22 margin and improved their lifetime record to 21-12-6 in 39 meetings with York.
Talbot-Tassi, a 5-foot-9, 185-pound sophomore, buried a power-play marker at 4:20 of the added frame to secure the win. He collected two points in the contest and now leads all OUA blueliners -- ranking second in the nation -- with 17 points in 12 games. On the winning play, he was assisted by Mathieu Pompei of Laval, Que., and Patrick Delisle-Houde who hails from Quebec City. Pompei is now second in the OUA and third in the national scoring race with a 6-17-23 record in a dozen contests.
York captain Shayne Rover had put the visitors on the board first with 31 seconds remaining in the opening session and it appeared as if that goal might hold up as the winner.
After a scoreless second, Delisle-Houde, a master's student in kinesiology and physical education, pounced on a rebound in the crease to knot the score just 61 seconds into the third period, with help from Pompei and Daniel Milne of Unionville, Ont.
Simon Tardif-Richard of Gatineau, Que., gave McGill the lead on the power play at 15:32, set up by Talbot-Tassi and Nathan Chiarlitti of Maple, Ont., but the Lions' Daniel Nikandrov tied it up on a power-play (with their goaltender pulled) at 18:12 to force the extra session.
McGill was 2-for-8 with the extra attacker, while York went 1-for-4 but failed to take advantage on an early five-minute power-play, which featured nine blocked shots by the Redmen PK unit.
Redmen netminder Jacob Gervais-Chouinard, an economics senior from Sherbrooke, Que., stopped 20 of 22 pucks for the win, improving to 4-1 on the season. He made his most dramatic stop with 2:04 remaining in overtime when he robbed what appeared to be a certain goal with an acrobatic blocker save to his top right side, which would've given York the victory.
Alex Fotinos collected the loss for the Lions with 32 saves on 35 shots. His record dropped to 2-3.
McGill (9-2-1) hosts Brock (7-4-0) on Saturday (Nov. 19) at 7 p.m. at McConnell Arena. York (7-4-2) visits Ottawa (4-6-1) that evening.

Domingue the hero as Gee-Gees edge Brock in overtime
Kevin Domingue (Laval, Que.) was the overtime hero on Friday night as the Ottawa Gee-Gees men's hockey team picked up its fourth-straight win, this time against the Brock Badgers.
Marc Beckstead (Morrisburg, Ont.), Mathieu Newcomb (Grand-Digue, NB) and Connor Sills (Thunder Bay, Ont.) also found the mark for uOttawa in the win.
"We're winning different ways — tonight was a chippy affair, lots of penalties and powerplays, (but) it's a huge two points," said uOttawa head coach Patrick Grandmaître. "Our work ethic is undeniable, and it's allowing us to compete for every game."
Beckstead opened the scoring for uOttawa just two minutes into the game, rifling home a short-range effort past Brock goaltender Adam Beukeboom, set up by Domingue.
Brock forward Sammy Banga drew the visitors level at 12:54 of the first period on a rebound. Badgers top scorer and Ottawa-native Adam Lloyd put Brock on top early in the second period, but Newcomb's goal some four minutes later at 8:02 pulled uOttawa back on even terms.
A blocker-side snipe off the rush from Sills at the 17:59 mark gave the Gee-Gees a 3-2 lead entering the second intermission.
An all-world effort from Skylar Pacheco tied things up for the Badgers early in the third period, creating a deadlock that would last deep into a second overtime frame.
Domingue secured the win for uOttawa with just 21 seconds remaining in double-OT, sending a saucer pass towards the net that fooled Beukeboom.
"It's awesome, we need to keep it up — (Brock) was a big team, so this victory's a big thing for us," said Domingue, who earned Yuk Yuk's Player of the Game honours for his game-winner. "I got lucky, but I'll take it — when you put the puck to the net, anything can happen."
uOttawa will be back in action on home ice Saturday at 7 p.m., with the talented York Lions (7-4-2) rolling into town for a Saturday night showdown.

Ridgebacks comeback attempt falls short against Stingers
MONTREAL, Que. – The No. 4 ranked UOIT men's hockey team fought hard to overcome some obstacles on Friday night but fell short in a comeback attempt as the No. 9 ranked Concordia Stingers pulled out a 4-3 victory.
When getting on the bus to head to Montreal, the Ridgebacks knew their game against the Stingers was going to be tough. What they didn't know was that they would run into bus issues on the way causing them to arrive at the arena after the scheduled start time.
After Concordia pushed back the start of the game over an hour to accommodate the Ridgebacks, it was all Stingers early on as they shot out to a 2-0 lead in the first period with two goals ten seconds apart.
In the second period, the Stingers would extend their lead to 3-0 as Charles-Eric Legare trickled one past UOIT goaltender Tyson Teichmann (Scarborough, Ont.) on a penalty shot.
Rather than packing it in trailing by three, the Ridgebacks fought hard and chipped away at the Stingers lead. Kyle Locke (Aurora, Ont.) got the Ridgebacks on the board with five minutes to go in the second period while Mike Robinson (Stouffville, Ont.) cut the lead to one just over a minute into the third period. Both goals were scored on the power play.
Robinson has seven goals this season as he set a new career high 13 games into the regular season.
UOIT would control the majority of the play in the final period outshooting the Stingers 10-4 but they could not find a way to beat Concordia goaltender Philippe Cadorette when down by one. Concordia's penalty killing unit came up big fighting off a five-minute cross checking penalty in the frame.
Olivier Hinse scored an empty netter to add some insurance for Concordia in which they would need as Anthony Latina (Belleville, Ont.) scored for UOIT with two seconds left in the game to make the final score 4-3.
With an assist on Latina's late goal, Ben Blasko (Kingston, Ont.) extended his point streak to four games.
Teichmann made 17 saves in the losing effort, suffering just his second loss of the season. Cadorette made 22 saves in his eighth win.
At 10-3-0, UOIT remains in first place in the OUA eastern conference but now have four teams within three points. UQTR is one of those teams at 8-4-1 and are set to host the Ridgebacks on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. McGill (9-2-1) and Queen's (9-3-1) trail UOIT by one point while Concordia (9-3-0) sits two points back.
