WINDSOR, Ont. - The Lancer men's hockey team doubled up on the visiting Ryerson Rams in game one of the OUA quarterfinals on Wednesday night at South Windsor Arena.
Windsor's 4-2 victory gave the Blue & Gold a 1-0 lead in the best of three series. Games two and three (if necessary) are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday in Toronto at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Blake Richard had another outstanding night in net for the Lancers making 44 saves in the win. Charlie Graham made 33 saves for the Rams.
Ryerson wasted no time getting on the board scoring just nine seconds into the game. Matt Mistele took the puck off the faceoff and fired it from the point surprising both the Lancer defense and Richard.
The Lancers did not let the quick goal faze them, however, as they bounced back four minutes later with a goal from Kyle Hope at 3:58 to tie the game at one. Josh Sterk scored at 5:59 to put the Rams back up and give them a 2-1 lead heading into the second period.
It was Windsor's turn to score right off the hop in the second period. Tyson Ness tied the game up at 0:51 seconds scoring his third of the post season. Eric Palazzolo then put the Blue & Gold up 3-2 with a rocket from the point at 8:36 for the eventual game winner.
The Lancers surely felt the pressure from the Rams in the third period, but some outstanding saves from Richard kept the visitors at bay. Denomme sealed the win with an empty netter late in the period.
Game two is set for 7:15pm on Friday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto. Tickets for the game can be purchased online here or at the gate upon arrival. The game can also be seen live online at www.oua.tv.
